OS X Security Update 2003-07-14 Available
Running OS X (10.2.6) Software Update this afternoon shows the (expected) Security Update to address the (very long) password bug reported a week or so ago. Here's the info from the SU window:

" Security Update 2003-07-14 addresses a potential vulnerability when a password is required upon waking from the Screen Effects feature, which could allow an unauthorized user access to the desktop of the logged in user.

The 1.7MB download requires a restart.

iChat AV with USB Kensington Webcam
There were a couple of reader reports on USB webcams working with iChat AV from the past on the iChat AV feedback page but they both noted having to keep a DV camera connected (and on) to be able to use the USB webcam (Logitech Quickcams). A reader mail today noted some drivers used with a Kensington USB VideoCAM that may help avoid that requirement:

"Hi Mike, I've had success getting my USB cam (Kensington VideoCAM VGA) to work with iChat AV with a new utility called iChatUSBCam (beta 2) from along with the Quicktime USB Cam driver MacCam 0.8 This USB cam picture looks every bit as good as my friend's Sony VX200 on a 17" Powerbook G4/1GHz!
My configuration is a G3 Blue/White w/ 500MHz G4 upgrade (My 500MHz G3 wouldn't work. Couldn't find a way around the processor check). I hope this helps others.
Anthony S.
President, VMUG
(The Las Vegas Macintosh User's Group)"

Anthony later wrote:

" Just a little follow-up on that last post I sent. I didn't try this utility with my 500MHz G3 since I purchased the G4 prior to finding it. iChatUSBCam is also supposed to fix the > 600MHz G3 situation also.
Anthony "

*Update* - See Tuesday's news page or the iSight Firewire camera reports page for a reader mail on iChatUSBcam working with an iSight and G3/500 in iChatAV.

OS 10.2.6/iTunes Burn Support File for Pioneer DVR-A06/106
Sean Rose sent a Modified Pioneer device-plugin for OS X 10.2.6/iTunes 4 burn support with the new DVR-A06/106 drive. (FYI - DVD+R/+RW burning currently requires Toast 5.x as to date (as of 10.2.6) Apple's iApps don't support DVD+R/+RW burning as far as I know. Personally for a Mac, I'd not pay $100 more for the A06/106 over the 105/A05 model just for DVD+R/+RW capability in the drive)
Note: As always, the modified file replaces the original file of the same name (long path to the device-plugin file in OS X - search to find it. Use the terminal as root to replace existing file in OS X (for Jag enable root user in Netinfo manager - see this Apple kbase doc on how. Best to not leave root user enabled however) - or reboot to OS 9 to overwrite the existing file). These files are provided "as-is", and may not work flawlessly with all systems/configurations. I'll add this to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.

Manual Mac Install of Jungle Warfare mod for UT2003
Friday's news page had a note on a (PC exe installer) Jungle Warfare mod for UT2003 (link revised in 2004) (huge download (294MB) plus a 2MB 1.1 beta update.) Two readers and I managed to get the mod installed (to play maps) after using either a PC or Virtual PC to run the installer file for manually copying the new files to the Mac UT2003 package. One reader said there may be a Mac installer for this mod soon, but in the meantime for Mac owners that want to play the maps here's a guide to installing it. (If you have the space and are not confident on doing this - make a duplicate of your UnrealTournament 2003 app as a backup.)

  • Use a PC or VPC to run the EXE file (point it to a folder that's empty)
*Make sure you have enough free disk space as the files created are over 700MB (too big to fit on a 700MB CDR unless you ZIP them afterwards as I did)
    * don't forget to download the 1.1 beta update (.u file) to replace the UT2003 system folder older version from the large exe installer.
You now have a complete set of the new files for the mod to copy to the Mac.

  • From the Finder, select your mac Unreal Tournament 2003 app and Cntrl+Click (or right click for 2 button mice) and select "Show Package Contents"

  • Copy the files from each folder (Animations, Music, StaticMeshes, etc.) of the JWF mod files to their corresponding folder inside the UT2003 mac app/package (Note: copy the JFW/Maps files to the UT2003 Maps folder - drag the original Entry map to the desktop to preserve the original file just in case.)

  • After copying all the files, there should be two new game modes available (Jungle Warfare and Jungle Warfare Sabatoge), each with several maps. For more info on the game, see their game guide.

BTW - Creating a "JWF" folder at the root level inside the Mac UT2003 app does not work - it will not show any JFW maps in the game for either of the two modes if the maps are in a JFW folder. Although some UT2003 maps may work if just put in the User/(you)/Library/Application Support/Unreat Tournament 2003 folder, that did not work for this mod for me.

After the manual install above, I (and two other readers) were able to play the maps of both modes of Jungle Warfare (I ran 'instant action' mode, but one reader said even the server browser worked).
Map Notes: I had problems (repeatedly) running some maps like "Crossing" with an ATI graphics card installed (9700 Pro OEM, 10.2.6) - it would black screen/hang or kernel panic repeatedly (clean ini file did not help, neither did editing the ini file for the mod to select OpenGL vs Direct3D as the renderer - that setting seems to be ignored on the mac). After one reader said he could run that Map fine on his system with a GeForce4 card, I swapped in a GeForce4Ti card and the map (repeatedly) ran fine. So there must be some issue with some maps and the ATI card/drivers I had (default ones from 10.2.6) - just a FYI in case anyone else has problems running/loading some of the JFW maps. (When crashes/hangs happened I had to power off the mac and reboot - and there was a 'running.ini' file left in the UT2003 System folder (in the user/library/apps suppport) folder which I deleted (otherwise other maps seemed to hang).

Plextor English pages on new Plextor PX708 8x DVD Recorder drive
Last Thursday's news page had links/babelfish translated pages on the new Plextor 8X DVD Recorder drive (8x speed with DVD+R media only unfortunately for macs - DVD+R isn't well supported on the mac other than Toast5). Two readers (thanks Simon and Rutger) sent links to english pages on the drive that were not at Plextor's north america site when I posted the info last week. (Links are from site)

To repeat the basic drive specs from last week's news page:

  • 8x DVD+R write speed (8,100 - 10,800KB/s) (ZCLV)
  • 4x DVD+RW write speed (5,400KB/s) (CLV)
  • 4x DVD-R write speed (5,400KB/s) (CLV)
  • 2x DVD-RW write speed (2,700KB/s) (CLV)
  • 40x CDR write speed (3,000 - 6,000KB/s) (PCAV)
  • 24x CDRW write speed (3,000 - 3,600KB/s) (PCAV)
  • 2MB buffer

No Mac compatibility listed (and would require modified Plextor device plugin for iTunes, etc. burn support). To date (w/Jaguar or older OS's) DVD+R/+RW media is not well supported on the mac (Toast5 does but not iDVD, etc.) but I wonder if that will change with Panther perhaps.

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 16 new reports added (reader entries from Friday Sunday midnight; entries today are added the next newsday morning). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 10,896 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

    DVD-ROM Drives:
  • IDE Artec 16x/48x in Beige G3 (OS X)

    Combo DVD-CDR Drives:
  • Firewire Liteon LSC-24081 used w/G4 AGP (OS X)
  • IDE Samsung SM-352BRNS (52x24x52x + 16x DVD-ROM) in Beige G3 (OS X)

(no native itune, etc. burn support w/o edited pioneer plugin file)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-106D in B&W G3 (OS X)
(used discburing file editing guide here to edit the file for burn support.)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-106D in G4/AGP (OS X)
(no itunes burn support w/o edited plugin file, why pay $100 more for the 106 over the 105 when the main difference is just DVD+R/+RW compatibility which is not well supported on the mac other than Toast 5 currently)
(FYI - Illustrated CD/DVD/CDRW drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, B&W G3 and 8600/9600 Macs.)

(Beige G3 MT illustrated HD upgrade guide here)
  • IDE Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 120GB in iMac (tray load) (OS X)
  • IDE Seagate ST380011A 80GB in G4 Cube (OS 9.2)
  • IDE Toshiba MK4019GAX 40GB in PowerBook G3 wallstreet2 (OS X)
(PB G3 wallstreet illustrated HD install guide here)
  • Western Digital 80GB in iMac slot loading (OS X)
(noted drive sleep issue some other imac/WD owners reported in the past)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
