First Owner Report on EyeTV 500 (HDTV model)
Here's the first reader report on the recently announced EyeTV 500 (HDTV model)

"Mike, Just received my EyeTV 500 from Elgato. (I took advantage of the $50 debut discount.) ($299 intro price until July 5th, mentioned in Monday's news page) Anyway, the setup is simple and the tuning box is almost tiny. But the reception performance is excellent. I got at least 18 ATSC (digital) channels here in Washington, D.C. A couple of my other ATSC tuners (attached to some very expensive HDTV equipment) can do no better. I should mention that I use an antenna feed that is high quality.

The recording process works well. The recorded images appear artifact free and definitely hi-def (when so broadcast, of course). There is no method I know of to transfer the full high-def images to digital monitors other than my Mac, however, so in a way, it is a closed system. Also, my attempts at editing were tentative at first because there is no real manual for the 500 model, though info on Elgato's site finally got me editing my recorded shows.

I hope to transfer some programs to DVD (with reduced resolution no doubt), but for now I do have one problem to discuss with Elgato. All my conversions from saved programs to Quicktime movies transferred without sound. So, either I'm doing something wrong or there is at least one glitch.

Otherwise, though, this is a fine product. Easy to use and (at least with a good antenna feed) able to tune in a multitude of digital channels. Thanks BTW for your site. It's a continual lifesaver.
-Bill K.

I'll add this later to the previous page of EyeTV owner feedback.

Giga Design recall on Cube G4/7457 CPU Upgrades
I was hoping for an official comment on this today before posting anything but I'm getting email from owners of GigaDesign G4/7457 CPU upgrades for Cubes (announced June 17th) about a recall email which includes an RMA number and prepaid shipping info. Despite what it sounds like, I understand the issue is with software included with the upgrade, not a hardware defect. (I don't want to say anything more until the companies involved do, and I've written Giga Design and Waypoint but no reply yet.)

Gaming's Unreal Future: Tim Sweeney Interview
JanK posted a link to an Interview with developer Tim Sweeney on the Unreal 3 game/engine with screenshots (some the same as posted last week at IGN.) The comments focus on DirectX 9 (Windows) although hopefully there will be a Mac (OpenGL) version also when it's released in (est.) late 2005.

Navy Seals Covert Operations 1.91a Update (Q3 Mod)
The Navy Seals Covert Operations mod website has a 1.91a update. (Not sure what the changes/fixes are but they mention some issues with Q3 v1.32 release.) Their downloads page has links to download a .ZIP file of the update (for mac users that used the 1.9 Mac installer there, they have 1.91 and 1.91a ZIP file updater downloads.)
I've not tried this mod personally but if any Mac user has with Q3 1.32 (or 1.32 G4) let me know. Thanks.

Entries with no comments, missing info etc. are not posted). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)

    Combo DVD-CDR Drives:

  • IDE Western Digital WD-2500JB (8MB cache) 250GB in Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.3) (MDD systems have native big drive support)
  • IDE Western Digital WD2000JBRTL (8MB cache) 200GB in (gigabit) Dual G4 (OS X 10.3) (no native big drive support in 2001 QS and older towers, so drive limited to appx 128GB formatted unless using a 3rd party driver or Mac IDE card w/big drive support.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
