Pioneer announces 16x DVD-R/+R, 4x Dual Layer DVD Burner
Pioneer recently announced the first 4x (max) rated Dual Layer DVD burner/16x max DVD-R/+R single layer rated DVR-A08XL drive. Extremetech has a story on the drive and a copy of the press release is at this CDRinfo forum thread. The drive will list for $179.99 (internal IDE/ATAPI) when it is released in August according to the PR. The A08XL is rated for 4x DVD+RW/-RW (same as the A07/107 model) 32x for CDR media (up from 24x max with the A07/107 model), and 24x for CDRW media.
As of today, the A08XL drive is not listed yet at Pioneer's usa DVD burner products page. Dual Layer DVD blanks are still hard to find (even for the 2.4x rated drives). The Extremetech article says the drive can burn 16x on 12x media thanks to Pioneer's "over-specification" technology - although the Press Release mentioned allowing higher than 8x burn rates with 8x rated media. (Granted it's hard enough to find even 8x rated discs at most retail outlets currently)
Of course there would be no native iApps burn support for the drive, but Patchburn is an option to try (still no iApps dual layer burn support though). Toast also supports most drives, although the promised Toast 6 update for dual layer burning support that was to appear in June is still not shown up at Roxio's site yet.

Reader Tip for G5 CD Bay Cover Jamming
(from a reader mail)

" Hey Mike, I am not sure if this is worth posting or not, but don't recall anything on it before (other then there being a problem that apple will fix). Many of the 1st rev G5's (and even some current models) have a problem with the CD door jamming and not going up all the way. (the G5's CD cover/door goes down when it opens. Although the CD door problem is rare overall (I never had the problem, nor did most owners although some mentioned it last fall) Brandon has the OEM drive which has the front tray edge/bezel removed so that is not the cause. If you're installing a new drive you purchased, remove the drive tray front bezel before installing it, otherwise the tray bezel hangs on the upper G5 case opening's edge when the tray is opened. But that is a different problem than what he is referring to.-Mike) The way apple repair techs fix this is just order a whole new case.
I however went and tore apart a case I have here for a project which had this problem and found out the problem is just two little pieces of plastic that were cast a little bit too long, to where the door rubs on them when it passes over. Trimming them down a little with a knife solved the problem.
Start to finish took about 20 minutes or so. Which could be a life saver to somebody who didn't want their machine swapped into another case. The part that i trimmed is circled, its just a little bit to tall (just a few thousandths actually).
Photos of the part can be seen here:

-Brandon "

I've not had this problem with my early model G5, which now has a swapped in DVR-107D drive instead of the original DVR-106 model. As mentioned before, you have to remove the drive's front tray bezel to clear the G5's case opening. (Press out on the bottom of the drive tray bezel to clear the retaining tabs, then it slides up and off the tray.)
