Quake3 1.29 Beta Classic Update Available:
(See below for mirror sites for the update)
Thanks to reader Ben B. for sending a note about a beta update to Quake3 for MacOS (not OS X).

" Hi Mike,
just a quickie - I'm sure you'll be flooded with mails regarding this - Graeme Devine has updated his .plan:

"A Mac Classic build of 1.29f is in the process of being posted to the id ftp site.
I have not had time to make an installer, or extensively test this build. SO IT MIGHT NOT WORK. However, because of user demand I am making it available asap. If you want to download the .sit file and give it a go, it'll be there shortly.

The filename is quake3-MacClassic-1.29f-BETA.sit
Graeme. "

the URL is
and it weighs in at 25.3Mb

I can't connect now due to the server being full... but welcome reader reports on this beta update.

Mirror Sites: Thanks to Mike Woodfill for sending these mirrors of the update:

Apple 17 Inch LCD CD includes ATI and Nvidia Flash ROM Updaters:
A reader with a new Apple 17" LCD display sent a note that the CD included a firmware updater for both the Nvidia GeForce2MX card and the ATI Rage128/Radeon series. I had never seen a Mac ATI card flash ROM updater before. Below is a screenshot listing the two flashers.

As an FYI, the Nvidia extensions were version 2.0. The latest Nvidia OS 9 drivers are v2.1 (shipping on new Macs).

Plextor 16/10/40 IDE CDRW and Beige G3 Interface Error Tip:
A reader that was having problems with this combo posted an update in the Drive Database:

Plextor 1610A IDE CDRW (16/10/40)
Beige G3 running OS 9.1
"This is yet another update in the saga which first presented itself after I exchanged the standard CDROM with a LiteOn 12x burner...couldn't get it to burn etc.
Swapped it for a Plextor1610A because many of you reported no problems using it and I was looking for easy (aren't we all!). After 8 days of playing around with different configurations of extensions, I still couldn't get reliable burns. Believe me when I say I tried everything I (and you all ) could think of...removed the Zif upgrade card, tried different media, hours on the phone with Roxio, numerous emails to Plextor, three system reinstalls..blah blah blah.

Last night at 2 in the morning, I read a report by a Mike S. regarding the Yamaha 16x10x40 in desperation. He noted that using SoundJam to burn in Toast helped him. First of all I didn't know that was possible. I tried that and got one successful burn. Then I hit the note from Chris in the same section where he spoke about problems with DAO and the Apple Driver. He suggested putting a "space" before the name of the driver (changing the loading order) and turning off DAO. When I had effected these two changes, I was good to go. I can now burn directly in Toast (with DAO unselected), and even send audio files from SoundJam to Toast 5.0.1.

I wanted to pass this on because I read other users who were having this inteface -9356 error and didn't know what to do. I even ordered a replacement IDE cable even though I had no other symptoms prior to installing this drive. I hope this helps someone because the info provided by others helped me trmendously!!
My hat is off to you, Mike, for providing a wonderful first and last resource site for people like me. Sorry this is long but I had to get it out. P.S. Now I'm going to play around and see if the secret was the driver name change or the elimination of DAO (I'll talk to Roxio about that one for sure)
Best regards Bernie "

G4 Cube Owner Polishes Out Mold Lines:
I've again updated the G4 Cube Owner Comments page with more owner reports. The most recent one includes comments on how one owner used a polishing compound to reduce the appearance of the mold lines in the housing. (Be careful however - if the compound type is too abrasive/coarse, it will mar the finish and do more harm than good.)
