Extracting Maps from PC RTCW GOTY Map Pack EXE Update
Reader Jose sent a direct download link to the "Unzipper" utility that I could not find earlier tonight. (It's included in the FarMaker download folder.) However Stuffit Expander also works fine. (Why Aspyr doesn't suggest using Stuffit Expander instead of UnZipper in the FAQ note on the Map Pack is odd since Stuffit utilities are standard on every Mac shipped for years.) Just drag and drop the .exe file onto either utility (I increase memory allocation for them since the file is 50MB and I was running OS 9.) There's a lot of dat files, etc. in the unstuffed PC installer but I just copied the map files over - backing up the two original MP map files of the same name just in case.
In quick test running a local server off the PB G4 (solo), the map loaded and seemed ok - but that's not an actual multiplayer test. And as noted earlier the PC v1.33 servers are reportedly not compatible with the current Mac 1.32 version.

Info on Mac Compatibility w/Return To Castle Wolfensten 1.33 Servers/GOTY Map Pack just released for PCs
Yesterday there was a 1.33 update to PC RTCW and a release of the Game Of the Year (GOTY) version map pack addon for previous owners of the PC version. Aspyr's Mac RTCW support pages note the following answers to questions on Mac compatibility with these PC updates:

  • What about the new Game of the Year maps? Can I use them?

Yes, you can use those maps. You can even download them from the PC sites, but you will have to use an extraction utility to pull files out of the PC exe file. One such utility is UnZipper. [I searched VT and could find no hits on Unzipper for PC or Mac. A quick google search also didn't find any current download for it..-Mike (Update - see later news item above for Unzipper download link and info - but Stuffit Expander also works fine - not sure why Aspyr didn't mention the Stuffit Expander, since it's included with most every Mac made for years.)]
We are looking at repackaging these map files to a more Macintosh-friendly format and finding a host for them. Watch this space or the downloads tab of the game's page for more information.

  • How about the new 1.33 update, I see servers with that version, but I can't join them, saying something about "invalid .pk3 files". ...

We are investigating this now, but it does seem as though the Macintosh client cannot join those servers. "

The GOTY map pack update noted it required the v1.33 update on the PC. Links to the appx 50MB PC GOTY Map pack (.exe file) update mirror sites are listed at Activision's Wolfenstein downloads page.

Latest GeForce4 Titanium Card Length Extended for Better Support
A reader that just received a GeForce4 Ti card says his sample is much longer than the original shipping one shown in my Mac GeForce4 Ti article last month. I've added a photo of the longer card to the GF4 Ti article.
The first cards shipped are appx. the same length as the PC versions (although longer than the GF4MX card as shown in my photos) and had a note in the box about removing the card prior to shipping the computer to avoid any damage.
The new form factor cards are longer so that the end of the card engages in the metal support slot near the Airport card to better secure the card in shipping. (This is a good thing considering systems will be shipped with the card installed, unlike the early orders were the card was shipped separately.)

OEM Mac GeForce3 AGP cards for $239 (pre-order)
(from a reader email)

    " Mike,
Thought you might want to post this. I am looking for a GeForce3 AGP card w/ADC connector due to GeForce4Ti price/problems and was sad to miss the $199 price in late March at OWC (that only lasted 2 hours anyway before all sold out [posted here in the news back then-Mike]). I checked the OWC website earlier today [yesterday-Mike] and the card was not listed. I was browsing again tonight and OWC is now taking orders at $239 for this card. For about $8.50 for S&H, this is a good value. Too bad they can't honor the $199 price for faithful XLR8YOURMAC readers!
    Martin"

Update - as of Friday (6/14/2002) these cards were in stock and shipping, but may sell out at any time (like any link/price in the archives news page - it may not be valid over time).
I don't know where they found any stock of these OEM GF3 cards, which are rare to find in any quantity now. The last post here on them at $199 sold out within hours of posting the link. Perhaps they paid more for these than the last batch resulting in the higher price, I don't know.

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
