Apple PDF Doc on Universal Binaries/Code conversion to X86
RTMac posted a link to a (106 page) doc at http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/universal_binary/universal_binary.pdf that describes how to use Xcode version 2.1 (recent update) to create a universal binary. (Includes troubleshooting information and build options). Here's a clip on on Altivec code from page 13 :

" ... Developers who use AltiVec instructions in their code or who intentionally exploit architectural differences for optimization or other purposes, will need to make the most code adjustments. These developers will probably want to consult the rest of this document before building a universal binary.
AltiVec programmers should read "Preparing Vector-Based Code" (page 53) and consult "x86 Equivalent Instructions for AltiVec Instructions" (page 73)... "

They also have a web pages on the subject at http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/universal_binary/.

Utility to list OS supported burners
(from a reader mail last night. The name rings a bell but I can't remember if I've posted it before. I've not tried it personally and it's dated from 2004 so not sure it's Tiger compatible, but Tiger has basic burn support for most drives it seems.)

" I've just found a cute free utility that tells you what models of CD-RW/DVD-RW a particular version of OS X will 'support' - the info is taken directly from the OS (it's not a list in the app).
Don't know if you've come across it before, it's called Burnerz from http://www.thinkertons.com/
... scroll down the page and you'll see it..
Regards, Dave "

(Of course many thousands of readers are already using Patchburn for iApps burn support with unsupported (natively) drives in OS X 10.2.x and 10.3.x. There's also a Tiger version.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,777 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • Firewire (cased) Sony DRU-710A used w/eMac (OS X 10.4)
  • Firewire (cased) Sony DRX-720UL-T used w/Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.4)
    (problems noted with burns)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Hitachi Travelstar (5400rpm) 60GB in Mac Mini (OS X 10.4)
(OWC has a page with Installation videos (QT) on installing Mac Mini Memory, Hard Drive and Optical Drives.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
