Apple doc on Display Hot Swap issue with new MacBook Pros
Apple posted a doc on MacBook Pro display issue related to "hot-plugging" that lists only the new "Santa Rosa" models as affected:

Issue or symptom
When hot-plugging an external display into your MacBook Pro, you may notice the external display occasionally stays dark, or the internal display of the MacBook Pro appears to flash or turn black.

Sometimes, when switching from an S-Video to a DVI connection, the internal display may appear black or display only the mouse cursor.

Products affected
-MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2GHz)
-MacBook Pro (17-inch 2.4GHz)

Solution
1) Wait 5 seconds for the screen to automatically re-size or activate.
2) If this doesn't occur after 5 seconds, click on Detect Displays in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
3) If the internal (or external) display still doesn't re-size or activate, press the F7 key to turn on mirroring mode, or restart the computer.

This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

Feedback on Parallels Desktop 3.0 3D Gaming support, Enabling DirectX
(Updated with notes on enabling DirectX and vram size settings)

"Parallels 3.0 3D gaming
After enabling DirectX (it's not enabled by default)
- Titan Quest - starts, but no graphics - GuildWars - gets a bit further but still useless (can see the "title page" graphics but upside down and with none of the controls) - Sam and Max, any episode - crashes immediately in fullscreen Parallels, runs great windowed (non-coherence).
One for three :)

(I asked for details on his mac model and graphics card/chip.)
It's a first generation 2.0Ghz Core Duo Macbook Pro, ATI x1600 256m. I tried a Bootcamp image and a virtual disk image, and both worked the same.

The most interesting thing for me was Sam and Max working better in windowed mode. I was expecting that full-screen would be more compatible.

(His later reply mail had an earlier time than the first one)
I'd been in Bootcamp updating to the 1.3 drivers. For some reason my Mac has stopped automatically resetting its clock back to "Mac time" (system clock is UTC, I think) from "Windows time" (system clock is local time) when I reboot after using Boot Camp. I have to go manually into "Open Date and Time" to fix it and I hadn't noticed it was off until this morning. (Apple had a kbase doc/FAQ item on this last year when bootcamp came out. )
-Stephen"

Kevan had asked how to enable DirectX (I asked if he had checked Parallels help, options, etc.) and Stephen replied with info and also some notes on vram size settings:

"To enable DirectX you have to go into the "Video" page of the VM options, and check the "Enable DirectX Support" checkbox. I guess that configures the Parallels virtual video card device to tell Windows that DirectX is supported. The instructions are on page 146 of the User's Guide. OpenGL is enabled by default.

I saw a forum post yesterday from one of the Parallels developers that you _don't_ want to change the amount of video memory allocated, just leave it at the default 16M. Apparently when using DirectX or OpenGL the native VRAM of your video card is used, not the allocated virtual memory used normally, so it will use the full 128 or 256M that your Mac has.
-Stephen"

Despite their comments I wonder if any of the problems you had in 3d games would be affected by changing vram size though? (maybe just bugs, compat. problems) Can you verify their comments by checking in Windows? (Does windows Device Mgr show the video card correct info, any games you have that list the graphics card properties?) FYI - Kevan later wrote that the video adapter is listed as "Parallels Virtual"...

If you run Parallels Desktop 3.0 with 3D games, let me know what the performance is like - include details on your Mac model/graphics card/chip.
FYI:

" I got the upgrade offer e-mail from Parallels giving 50% off the normal fee. The e-mail gave 6th June as the cut-off date for the offer. However, i just ordered and received my upgrade serial today the 8th of June. Might be worth pointing out to your readers.

New MacBook Pros, DVD Player HD Options, Toast 8 Reporting Bug (Blu-Ray support)
A reader with a new MacBook Pro wrote that Toast 8 reported the drive supports blu-ray (a bug) and sent a screenshot showing OS X DVD player HD options (which should be present on G5 and later Macs.) Several owners of other drives (not blu-ray models) replied that Toast 8 also lists support for Blu-Ray for their drives.

Feedback on BootCamp 1.3 Beta (XP and Vista users)
" Just wanted to let you know that i completed a clean install of BootCamp 1.3 with XP/SP2 using an update serial - no problems. Following up with Parallels 3, i got it to run totally clean - no issues at all using my BootCamp 1.3 installation.
Many props to Apple and Parallels for giving us such an easy time of things... too bad its to run Windows, but i have to check compatibility of my files.

(Just for the record, I asked Don for info on his Mac model)
Mac Pro quad 3GHz, 6 gigs ram and bootcamp partition on a Raptor 150GB, OS X boot drive (video production rig...)

On the 3d game part (Parallels 3.0)... Haven't tried anything yet - had barely enough time to get it running and try some simple things before bed. Oh... I did run Celestia (3d planet/galaxy simulator) and google earth... Both ran very well.

Totally unrelated... Motion 3 is absolutely sick. I'm actually panicing because the possibilities are now so limitless. The first time you pull that camera away from the video, and then you make it swoop past it?... Amazing... And all without rendering... Its quite a site to behold...
-Don"

Another reader using Windows Vista didn't have as smooth an upgrade:

" The 1.3 driver install STILL has the bug that cause a BSOD when it tries to overwrite a previous version driver (1.2) while it's still in use. Probably trackpad driver again although i can't be entirely sure since BSOD wasn't very informative to a non windows super techie junkie. was using first gen macbook pro and windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

I had this VERY same bug in 1.2, i ended up having to clean install windows that time. I hope I don't have to do this again. "better installer" is a lie

(he later wrote)
after reboot i ran install again and it worked. only thing I did differently was unplugged usb mouse and used trackpad. I don't know for certain if this was fix or just luck. Or that the first install attempt did manage to overwrite the previous driver version even though it managed to BSOD, so reinstalling again didn't run into previous driver again. Too bad I can't test to see what fixed. Heh.

(and a later mail said)
Boot Camp 1.3 Driver Updates (and not so updated)
These only include drivers I could observe in my own macbook pro install under Vista Ultimate 32

Apple Bluetooth, Date: 5/8/2007 ver: 1.3.0.12

ATI X1600 Radeom Mobility Display, NOT INSTALLED IN VISTA, still using Microsoft's generic driver fro 8/21/2006, and ATI still only offers XP boot camp driver. Still only possible to install this latest driver from ati plus modtool as mentioned in previous post.

Apple IR Receiver Date 4/18/2007, ver. 1.3.09
Apple Keyboard 4/19/2007, 1.3.0.7
Apple Keyboard 4/19/2007, 1.3.0.7
Apple Trackpad 4/19/2007, 1.3.0.2
Apple Built-in iSight, 4/9/2007, 1.3.0.0
Apple Trackpad Enabler, 4/19/2007, 1.3.0.2
SigmaTel, 1/2/2007, 6.10.5337.0

Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g/n Driver NOT INSTALLED IN VISTA

Still Installs a very old Intel Chip-set driver set from 2006. VERY disappointing that apple is still neglecting to keep all of the 3rd party drivers up to date, they don't even make them, the least they can do is package installers for them. No ati drivers to speak of for Vista, and outdated intel chip-set ones, broadcom drivers not installed (at least on an unsupported macbook pro with a swapped out card, but even if they had been installed the ones packaged in installer are out of date anyways by several months and versions). SigmaTel Drivers I'm not sure if they are up to date or not, that's less familiar hardware to me.
-Adam W."

If this update fixes any problems you had previously or you see other benefits, let me know (include details on your Mac model and Windows OS used- thanks)

$69.95 802.11n card for Intel-based Macs
(Note: on Friday the price was $59.95, as of Monday the 11th, it's now $69.95.)
If you haven't already upgraded your intel-CPU Mac with an under $50 (list) Mac Pro card (or Dell 1500 card), Fastmac sent a press release on their 802.11n upgrade card for Intel-based Macs. (iMac Intel Core Duo, MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac mini (Intel) and Mac Pro.) I wondered if Quickertek had lowered their price (which was originally $150+) and they have, but it's still about 2x the cost ($99.95 today) of the Mac Pro N card.
But after posting notes (and an article) on using the Mac Pro card as an upgrade several months ago there may be even fewer dealers now that will sell it to an end-user. (Several months back I'd mentioned a bulletin that was reportedly sent to dealers warning them not to sell to end users or install the Mac Pro N card in other systems.)
