Quicktime 7.6.2 Update (notes compatibility and security fixes)
Matthew sent a heads-up on a iTunes and QT update in Software Update. (QT 7.6.2 for Leopard and Tiger also available for download at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) Here's the info from the SU window:

" QuickTime 7.6.2 includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility and enhance security. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3520.(About Quicktime 7.6.2)

For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222. (Apple security updates page - here is the doc About the security content of QuickTime 7.6.2) "

That "About QT 7.6.2" doc doesn't have much more info than above but also says "improves support for iTunes 8.2" (also released today -see below).
I'm going to update one machine (running both OS X and Vista 64) with D/L updaters (QT, iTunes) and hold off on the main work machine until I'm confident of no issues with my configs. I have no 3rd party addons/codecs on that machine so usually I've had no problems with updates but have a backup just in case. (FYI - after a reboot (reqd) and some quick tests (iTunes 8.2 music, TV shows/video/movie short playback tests, iMovie video/camcorder imported video playback) I've not noticed any problems so far on that machine, but again no addon codecs, etc. on it. Sometimes QT updates have broken 3rd party addons/codecs.)
QT 7.6.2 is also available for windows, as is a (dated today) MobileMe Control Panel for Windows (v1.3).

For MBP owners w/Flawed 8600M Failures (out of warranty) - did you have a problem getting (no cost) repairs?
In Friday's news I posted a FYI on Apple's updated doc regarding MacBook Pros affected by the flawed 8600M GPU (noting they've increased the GPU related warranty extension to 3yrs from date of purchase).
I had a reply to that post saying that although the doc sounds promising, in reality few (out of warranty) failures he has seen were actually covered - as a (required) diagnostic test used rarely flagged the failed MBPs that had all the classic symptoms (no video on either built-in LCD or ext. display) as qualifying for the GPU extended warranty repair. (In his experience he said only about 10% were flagged as qualifying by that test, which I found disturbing personally if his experience is common - and makes me wonder how complete its check/criteria is. Was it written by nvidia?) He said even if the test failed to flag it as qualifying they could still submit it for coverage, but rarely (in his experience) was it covered in those cases. If someone that had a GPU failure repair refused later had a real chip Failure Analysis done, the results would be interesting.
As mentioned in some financial reports last July, Nvidia took a (IIRC) $200M charge related to this so I assume they're paying for these flawed GPU related failures (unless there's something in their supply contacts that frees them of any liability for material/product defects).

I don't know how many readers with one of the affected models (see apple doc) has had an out-of-warranty failure but if you have let me know if you had any problems getting the repair covered (free) or not. Thanks.
BTW - had about 1/2 dozen replies (and some with 2 MBP's repaired) today but many mentioned repairs under Applecare (or the std warranty) - to clarify I was interested in those that had failures outside of the standard warranty - i.e. to see if the "extended GPU" warranty coverage was commonly granted - as the tech comments said the special diagnostic test for GPU pkg failures rarely flagged failed units as qualifying. I did receive one reader mail saying his failure (out of warranty - classic no video on LCD or ext display) was refused after the "test" said it didn't qualify. And I have to write several readers back to ask if their repairs that were done were under Applecare or any existing standard warranty or not. I just can't see why Apple would be refusing these repairs when clearly they seem to be classic cases of the flawed GPU failing. (And Apple has been great about out-of-warranty G5 Coolant leak repairs over the last year or two although as I said before, IMHO that may be due to the potential safety issue/liability.)
(There's some previous reports from 2008 here the on MacBook Pro GPU/Video Failures page and I'll add the latest mails on failures (warranty or not) to that page within the next few days.)

Mac Pro/4870/Dell S2409W (DVI-DVI) Bootcamp video problems solved
Here's the latest from the 2008 Mac Pro owner that had problems booting to Windows (bootcamp) after upgrading to a 4870 card (using the DVI port->DVI input on his Dell 24" S2409W display)

" Mike, I got the cables from the Apple store today: MDP to DVI apple cable adapter, and a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable. Here are the results: w/4870 and Dell 24" S2409W display at 1920x1080 resolution:
(Mac OS 10.5.7 always worked with any configuration tried and as mentioned earlier, the 8800GT card had no problems with bootcamp/DVI-DVI connection)

Booting into Vista 64Bit (Bootcamp)

  • DVI to HDMI - No Go
  • MDP to HDMI - OK But Black boarder around image. (The same one as observed when getting blank white image w/DVI to DVI or DVI to HDMI)
  • MDP to DVI - OK !!

I'll let you know soon with the results when using the HP w2207 22" Display.
(he later wrote)
The HP 22" Display had no such issues DVI to DVI from the 4870. Worked perfectly with Vista 64/Bootcamp.
-Hal"

I've added a note/update to his earlier posts here that using the MDP->DVI adapter worked. (As mentioned in earlier posts, not everyone had this problem although they used other displays.)

Dell Mini 9 (popular for OS X installs) goes EOL
From a reader mail this weekend. (The Mini 9 was popular for relatively easy OS X leopard installs - several readers were very happy with the performance.)

"It is confirmed that the mini9 is EOL (no longer at Dell's site/store). On various message boards it is being lamented.
In their product roadmap it is replaced with the 10v, and there are people working on making the mini10v as easy to hackintosh as the 9 was, but we shall see.
But if you dig into Dell's website, the Vostro A90 is still available, and this was the Japanese version of the mini9 that was brought to the US market. Its actually a good deal, with 16GB SSD, bluetooth, webcam, etc. for under $300. Only comes in black. No $40 markup for various patterns and colors.
-Mike K."

BTW - There's already a thread in the mydellmini forums on Mini 1011 (Mini 10v) and OS X - Info.
