OS X 10.6.4 and SIL3132 SATA Card Drivers
From a recent reader mail - I've not seen any 10.6.4 issues with the last beta SI site driver with a (cheap) 3132-based eSATA expresscard. (Same driver is used for PCIe and expresscards)

"I was wondering if any readers are having issues with SiI 3132 based eSata PCI-E cards since updating to 10.6.4. Drives that were previously mounting with 10.6.3 no longer do on my MacPro Dual Quad (early 2008). Any help is appreciated. Thanks for the site and support.
(What SI3132 driver version are you using? (Did you install the v1.2.3.0 beta driver version I posted here back in Feb 2010? (in the news page and also on the original page about Cheap SATA cards w/OS X 10.6.x.-Mike)
That is the driver that I am using... not sure why it isn't working unless there is an issue with the card itself (though it does seem to be working when booted into Win 7)...
(I wonder if reinstalling the OS X driver would be worthwhile. And in case it's a /vol issue, have you tried mounting other drives with it?-Mike)
I reinstalled the driver last night but it still was not working this morning. What is odd however is that after verifying in Windows 7 one last time that the card was working and then restarting into OSX the eSata/USB Blu-Ray has just shown up via the SiL card.
Regards, Matthew"

I'm no longer using the PCIe 3132-based card in my Mac Pro (replaced it with the faster/natively supported NewerTech 6G eSATA card I reviewed some months back). But I still use a (cheap) 3132-based eSATA Expresscard with an early 09 MacBook Pro now running 10.6.4. I had installed the drivers mentioned above when they were released earlier this year. The 3132 expresscard still works in 10.6.4 - I used it last night to do a TM backup to an HD in a Voyager Q HD Dock using eSATA port.

Maya User comments on OS X 10.6.4 update
Earlier today I posted Valve's (late) warning about 10.6.4 update/Nvidia GPU issues with 'high end gaming'. I wasn't sure if this would affect any functions used by Pro 3D apps and was going to write a reader that uses Maya (and has posted in the past regarding 3D/GPU driver issues/fixes in OS X updates) to ask if he'd updated/seen any issues with 10.6.4. Here's his reply:

" no changes in 10.6.4 for Maya
Hey Mike, 10.6.4 doesn't negatively affect Maya 2011 and I think it fixes issues with 10.6.3 for older versions of Maya (like graph editor glitches).
Unfortunately, performance isn't any better for advanced features like Maya 2011's viewport or Mudbox. ATI absolutely trounces Nvidia on OS X for those modern GLSL implementations and Autodesk and I have been harassing them to address it forever to no avail.
-Dave"

Valve warns about 10.6.4 update Nvidia GPU performance issues
Too late for many, but here's a post from Friday in the Steam forums:

"10.6.4 Performance Issues for Nvidia Users
The recent 10.6.4 update from Apple has noticeable performance issues for NVidia graphic chip owners running high performance games.

If you wish to avoid this, you should consider waiting to install the 10.6.4 update until Apple has had the opportunity to address this issue.

Full details of what is contained in the 10.6.4 update can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4150.

If you have already installed this update and believe your graphic performance is affected, please contact Apple support (http://www.apple.com/support/) for details on what to do."

There's also a thread in the Steam forums - 10.6.4 Performance Issues for Nvidia Users. One of the posts there is from a 9400M user that said he benchmarked TF2 and Portal in 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 and didnt see any differences, but not sure what settings were used. And some posts noted this isn't just an Nvidia GPU issue - an ATI GPU user also noted problems with Motion Blur enabled in 10.6.4:

(reply to an earlier post in that thread)
"But I have weird issue I don't remember having on 10.6.3 in HL2 (I'm currently in episode One). When the frame rate is good, (40+fps), I see some weird stuttering every second, as if I didn't move at constant speed (this is something I used to see in Doom 3). Vsync solves the issue, but reduces my fps to 30. I'm using the geforce 9400M.

Same issue here; ATI 4670. I never tried vsync; disabling motion blur fixed it for me.
No problems with motion blur in 10.6.3."

FYI: To see FPS rates in Steam/Source games, open the console and enter: cl_showfps 2

I wish security updates were separate as that's the reason many install the update. (And more frequent GPU driver updates, without having to wait for an OS version update.)
