More on Pismo ColorSync: I just tried changing the Monitors Control Panel "color" profile from 'Color LCD' to 'PowerBook G3' and noticed the Pismo's display definitely brightened up with what seems to be a less blue tint (but my eyes are far from a perfect in this regard).
Another Pismo owner wrote that Photoshop's custom calibration helped, but isn't perfect:
"Photoshop 5.5 ColorSync setup gets the Pismo screen into the ballpark.
I still wouldn't do any serious color correction on it, but it's ok for
non-critical use. My desktop background is mid gray (128 128 128 RGB)
and that helps me instantly spot any color casts in the display itself,
and also assists in the calibration process itself.

A Lombard owner reported he copied the profile from that system to his wife's iBook which had none. In the past I'd had a Lombard owner say the iBook display had better viewing angle and contrast, which surprised me.
QPS IDE DVD-RAM Drives (PC Only): A reader replied to the earlier post asking for sources of IDE DVD-RAM drives:
"Mike:
Did a quick search with Sherlock for an IDE DVD RAM drive and came back
with this, http://www.shoplet.com/hardware/db/340007.html [ $526.95 - odd since QPS's site lists it at $499-Mike]
It's an IDE drive made apparently by QPS, the same people who make the Que
drives. I checked at their site, http://www.qps-inc.com, and it's listed as PC only.
Hope this helps. After all the tips I've received over the years from reading
your site, just glad to return a small favor. Keep the Mac faith.
Mike in Sacramento.
"
Several readers also mentioned the Firewire external DVD-RAM by QPS (retail $599). As I noted earlier today, The Apple IDE DVD-RAM drivers are proprietary and not sure they would work with the QPS IDE drive. The only retail Mac DVD RAM drivers I know of (DVD RAM Tune-up) are SCSI only.

XLR8 Lowers G4 Upgrade Pricing: XLR8 has a press release on lower pricing on their line of G4 upgrades (MAChCarrier and ZIF models).

Toast Deluxe 4.02 Update Available: [A reader noted as of 11AM the update was still not available yet] According to a mail from Adaptec tech support,
the update should be available today via Toast 4's 'WebCheckup' feature:
"
I'm HAPPY to announce the long awaited 4.0.2 update of Toast Deluxe will hit the 'WebCheckup'
site, Tuesday March 21st in the a.m.Just launch Toast 4.0 and select WebCheckup
from the Internet menu to get your free update.

iMac Internal CDrom Recorder: Chris Gaiser sent a note that Techworks has
a $299 list 4x write/20x (max) read internal CDR for the iMac (233-333Mhz models). I didn't see a mention in the specs that it supports CDRWs.
Another USB ZIP CDR Report: A reader replies to the post in yesterday's news regarding problems with a USB ZIP CDR:
"I recently purchased one of the USB Zip CDR drives. I am using it on a 2nd
generation G4 350 with Toast 4.0 default install. I burned 4 blank cdr disc
without problems. But when my system went into sleep mode the Zip CDR never
came back.
I spoke with Iomega tech support who was very helpful. They
agreed with my original assessment that the drive was going to need to be
replaced. They shipped overnight a replacement drive with return shipping
label.
All is working fine now and I have been able to burn 4x cdr and 4x
cdrw media without a coaster. The only draw back appears to be related to
the usb Zip drive issue with booting with the drive plugged in. If I plug
the drive in after boot up then all is fine. This seems to be a running
issue with other USB cdrw drives, as I had a Sony Xpressa 4/4/6 USB drive
for a short time. It never worked correctly with my G4 but worked only with
the Sony Discribe software on my Lombard Powerbook G3/400. And that was
only after plugging the drive in after boot up.

(The USB Spressa owner that reported USB Port 2 helped later wrote he's still have some problems with the drive.)
Pismo LCD ColorSync Profile: Steve Weisel wrote that graphic designers
are complaining that the Pismo (or any 14" LCD Powerbook) has no
colorsync profile that provides the correct color matching (whites are too
blue and no adjustment seems to help with correct colormatching of screen
to print). Has anyone tried using Photoshop 5.5's colorsync setup? I welcome
feedback on this issue.
Slot Loading DVD IDE Drives: I've gotten several mails asking about these for use with B&W G3s or G4 systems. Check the FAQ's DVD section. Reports are there from the main news from owners of
Pioneer's slot loading DVD drives. As far as I know, only Pioneer has a slot loading DVD drive
*but* slot loading drives are not a good design to use with the dropdown CD drive cover on the B&W G3 and the G4 cases. As noted here before, ejecting the disc from a slot loading drive results in the disc hitting the drive cover panel (dropdown), which is not good for the mechanism or the disc in my opinion. This is one reason why Apple doesn't use
slot loading drives on the new cases. One reader removed the dropdown cover completely due to the slotted drive issue. (How to do this
is shown in my Illustrated CDROM install guide linked on the storage page at the site. The guide includes examples of Beige/8600/9600 and B&W G3 cases. The B&W G3 case design is literally identical to the G4 systems except for the plastics color. (The guide was written for a Kenwood drive, but the procedure would be similar for other models.)
Sources for IDE DVD RAM Drives? Does anyone know a source of IDE (not SCSI) DVD RAM drives?
(Apple uses an OEM Panasonic IDE DVD RAM, all retail models I've seen are SCSI). Apple has proprietary drivers for their DVD RAM drive I've been told (the Software Architects SCSI DVD RAM software will not work I hear). DVD RAM is also very slow to write (a Creative Labs SCSI DVD RAM drive I tested wrote small files at 1x CDR or less speed so I returned it). If anyone knows a source of IDE DVD RAM drives for sale, please contact me.
Linksys 10/100 Switch Report: A reader replies to the post on SOHO 10/100 Switches in yesterday's news:
"Mike,
Here's some more info for you.
I was also unable to get my brand new G4 to talk to my Linksys 10/100
Ethernet Switch, even though 5 other Macs and a PC could without any
problems. Apple and Linksys each told me to talk to the other. Finally,
after lots of cable switching, I found I could use the switch just fine
if I connected the G4 to the switch with a cable about 23 meters long or
longer. A 22 meter cable would sometimes connect, sometimes not. Nothing
shorter would. Maybe the extra cable length gives the switch enough time
to complete the auto-negotiating.
Right now I'm using a 25 meter cable just to be sure.
Rick

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.
Thanks to my wife Kay, the ultimate computer widow for putting up with all the time I spend with the site work, tests and email.= Top of Page =
