| Deus Ex Multiplayer Update Comments: |
| A thread in the game forums here noted several readers have had problems installing the Multiplayer update noted in yesterday's news. Tom Koons also noted the Readme file also mentions that:
"There is no "Configure Input Device" button in the Keyboard/Mouse settings. This button normally would have brought up the InputSprocket dialog to configure your mouse or gamepad. To access this functionality, use the old version of Deus Ex (InputSprocket settings are carried over to the multiplayer app automatically). You may also use the "talk" keyboard command during a multiplayer game to get to the console prompt, then backspace over the "Say" and type "configisp"
This is reportedly due to the porting of the update code from the PC. (I believe Westlake did this update port for free, so I suspect this is the reason for the missing Mac specific features.)

| Reader Tip on MP3 Burning -7932 Errors in iTunes: |
| In reply to some past posts of -7932 errors burning MP3 files, a reader sent some comments and tips that he's found. |
"
Mike,
I think I have a piece to the puzzle. When I used soundjam for playing
mp3's the cute little eye candy things like the equalizer readout in the
display would'nt bounce up and down, it wouldn't work, unless the mp3 was
created by soundjam. The CD that I tried to dreate had two songs that were
imported by iTunes into iTunes mp3 format and three mp3's from the web and
soundjam. The disc wouldn't burn. HOWEVER!!! When I Isolated the two
iTunes tracks two its own folder and burned them, it worked. I then tried
to burn an mp3 from soundjam by itself, it gave me the error -7932.
I think the problem is, unless its an iTunes created mp3. You can't burn it.
Now I have to figure out how to import all mp3's into iTunes so it converts
it to iTunes format. This has nothing to do with the ability to play it,
just burn it. Same thing with Soundjam. I could play any mp3 but unless I
converted it, the display equalizer readout (whatever its called) and the
crazy design plugin thingy would not work. Maybe its the same case. Ideas
anyone?
Joe
"
iTunes is said to be based on SoundJam technology so not sure why this would be a problem but I've been so swamped I've not used iTunes very much. (I did rip and burn some files for a future PB G4 review and bured MP3 files I had to an audio CD without problems on my Sony 10/4/32 firewire drive.) |

| Sonnet G4/500 in Beige G3 - Owner Tip on Altivec Programs: |
| One of today's CPU upgrade database entries was an update from a Beige G3 owner running a Sonnet G4/500. He had reported problems previously with altivec aware programs (Logic Audio and VPC 4), but noted a solution was using Powerlogix's cache and Altivec enabler in his updated post.
|
(Beige G3/266 w/Sonnet G4/500 ZIF upgrade)
"Virtual PC 4 and Logic Audio Platinum did not work with the upgrade unless I disabled the Altivec support.
Both applications are accelerated for Altivec, so it's a bit of a loss not being able to use it. Sonnet say they are working on it.
Well, I have found a way to get Altivec working in these apps. It's very simple actually. I just went to PowerLogix website and downloaded the latest software to enable altivec and secondary cache (both were beta, but seem very stable) on their processors.
I had no idea if it would work. But when I checked with Newers Gauge Pro it said Altivec was supported. I tested Fractals and indeed it was, I got 1570 MFlops.
I then tested Logic Audio Platinum and it did not crash even once and I could notice a speed boost when enabling lots of effects and softsynths.
I have also run Virtual PC 4 reliably for more than one hour, although I couldn't really notice any direct speed increases - it now runs on Altivec. Perhaps the increase in speed is only noticeable when watching movies or playing games - I have done neither.
What do you think of this Mike? Could it damage anything?
At least we now know for sure it's just a software thing.
Regards,
John"
Software can't damage anything (unless you overclock the cache speed perhaps) so if it's working I'd be happy, at least until Sonnet can provide something equivalent.
