G4/500 MP w/39160 3 drive X15 Cheetah Array Performance:
A reader sent an ATTO benchmark graph of his dual G4/500 with 39160 Adaptec SCSI card running a three-drive 15K RPM 18GB Cheetah array. He also noted the reason why performance was initially low with the external drives. I've added his comments and results to the 39160 SCSI Performance reports page.

Farallon Skyline PCI Wireless Networking Card Problems in S900
A reader reported he's not been able to get the Farallon wireless PCI networking card to work in his S900.

" Mike, I've got a SuperMac S900 with a Twin Turbo 128 video card installed. I'm trying to set up the machine on a wireless network, and have purchased a Farallon Skyline 11Mb PCI card. Whenever I install the card, I no longer get a video signal. The video card was originally installed in slot #2. When I moved it to #1 and installed the Skyline card in #2, the video worked. Unfortunately, the PCI card is still not recognized.
Any suggestions?
Ron Thompson
(I asked if he had tried the card(s) in other slots and he wrote)

I tried the card in all the slots. The only thing that worked to get video was the #1 slot for the video card and #2 for the NIC. I've also sent the question to Farallon. Very strange. Let me know if you hear anything. "

I can't remember the past (OS 9?) NIC card issues with S900s but that might have been with CPU upgrades that use "virtual firmware" novram patches. (I seem to remember PL had a patch for their CPU cards for this.) If anyone has used a Skyline wireless PCI card in an S900 let me know the details.

Reader Reports Intech CD Tools 5.7 Conflict w/iMovie 2 DV:
" Hi Mike,
Writing to report a conflict between InTech CD SpeedTools v.5.7 and iMovie 2.01 on a PowerCenter 150 with NewerTech G3/500 using 9.0.4, FW drivers 2.5 and a Canon ZR10 DV camera.

I had no problems using CD SpeedTools 5.6, but after updating to 5.7, video would no longer appear on the screen. Reverting to 5.6 solved the video problems.
Eugene Lou"

I forwarded this report to my Intech contact. iMovie 2.03 is the latest version but requires OS 9.1.

More Comments on DVD-R Disks for Data Files:
The latest reader comments on burning data files (non-Mpeg/movies) with a SuperDrive:

I had exactly this same concern about the utility of the SuperDrive for data archiving and put the question to an Apple QuickTime engineer who was demonstrating the new hardware and QuickTime streaming technologies at a UVA seminar on Feb 15th. His response was that the drive is capable of writing standard data formats to DVD media. Currently, Disk Burner only writes MPEG2 compressed data targeted for use in DVD playback devices to this drive. However, support for writing data to the SuperDrive is not expected until the next major release of the Disk Burner software. He also stated that Apple was working with Roxio to incorporate this feature into the next version of Toast.
Craig R."

Friday's news had a note about Toast 5 Titanium which is supposed to support DVD-R drives for data use.

Video Card/System Benchmark Performance Database Updated:
Updates to the Mac Game/Video Card Performance database included:

  • Unreal (640x480, 800x600,1024x768 ) from 7500 w/G3 400/440MHz using on-board video
  • Unreal (640x480, 800x600,1024x768 ) from 7500 w/G3 400/440Mhz using Radeon PCI card
  • Unreal Tournament (640x480, 800x600,1024x768 ) from 7500 w/G3 400/440Mhz using Radeon PCI card
  • Unreal Tournament (640x480,800x600,1024x768) from B&W G3/450 with Rage128 card
  • Wicked400 demo (640x480,800x600,1024x768) from B&W G3/450 with Rage128 card
  • Throughput results from B&W G3 w/G4/400 CPU with Voodoo2
(didn't note primary 2d video card, listed Voodoo2 card which isn't tested by Throughput since it can't do 2d and is only enabled during a glide, rave or opengl game.)
  • Cinebench 2000 results from B&W G3 w/G4/400 CPU and Voodoo2 card
(again the Voodoo2 is not used for this test, since it's windowed mode and the Voodoo2 has only full-screen acceleration (at 16bit mode only) and no 2d capability, so the results were from whatever primary video card he had installed - Rage128 I assume.)
  • G4Timedemo results from B&W G3 w/G4/400 CPU and Voodoo2 card

Total entries in the database to date: 2,590. If you haven't already, enter your results with any of the game titles or benchmarks listed on the entry page (details on how to test are there). If you're curious how a CPU upgrade or new Video card would help game performance, the search page options can help you find similar system/configurations to get an idea before you buy.
