| 7600 Owner Reports Using Skyline Wireless PCI card: |
| Despite the requirement noted earlier today (PCI 2.2 slot), a 7600 owner reported he's using the Skyline Wireless PCI card successfully:
"
Mike:
Just a note to let you know that I have been using the Farallon PCI/WiFi
Card combo in a PowerMac 7600 with G3 upgrade card without a hitch. I'm
communicating with an Airport base station as access point to a small
ethernet network. Internet access is via a router to a cable modem. The
Skyline setup works very nicely.

In related news, a Beige G3/266 owner said he's seeing the same issue mentioned for Beige G3/300 and /333 owners in Farallon's compatibility page. (See earlier news post for details and links.) |

| G4/667 and 733Mhz L3 Cache Speeds Changed? |
(Another Update - several readers quoted from the Moto 7450 docs that "2:1, 2.5:1, 3:1, 3.5:1, 4:1, 5:1, and 6:1 Core-to-L3 frequency ratios supported". My Apple contact replied the G4/667 and G4/733 systems L3 cache is running 1/4 the CPU speed.) Originally the G4 667Mhz and 733MHz (7450 G4 chip models) noted a L3 (level 3) Cache speed of 1/3 the CPU speed. (Still noted in the the Power Mac G4 Data sheet PDF file as of noon today.) However an updated TIL noted in yesterday's listings here titled Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio): Differences Between Models revised yesterday now lists the L3 cache speeds at 1/4 the CPU speed (167Mhz for the G4/667 and 183MHz for the G4/733). I've written a contact at Apple to ask if this is in error or if there has been a change. (Or if the original specs were in error.) I don't know of any utilities available now that correctly read the L3 cache on the 7450 (GaugePro doesn't detect it as noted here previously.)

| More on Farallon Skyline PCI Wireless Networking Card Compatibility |
| (Update: See the later news item where a 7600 owner reports the card worked fine.) In yesterday's news a Umax S900 owner reported he could not get a Farallon Skyline Wireless networking card to work in his system. Several readers wrote to say that Farallon lists PCI 2.2 slots as a requirement, which older Macs don't have.
"
Both the Farallon and Lucent PCI cards require PCI v2.2 in order to
function. www.farallon.com/products/wireless/skyline/pci/ hints at this.
Apple didn't get to PCI v2.2 until sometime after the Beige G3's...so I
seriously doubt that the S900 has the necessary version of PCI either.
You can arguably work around this by figuring out the actual differences
between PCI v2.1 and PCI v2.2; the major one is v2.2 provides voltages on
pins that v2.1 does not. But you'd have to be braver than me to attempt to
work around *that*!
The only other solution of which I'm aware is Ethernet converters that are
offered by several companies. These work fine, for example, with a Beige G3
(although personally I think they're overpriced): http://orinocowireless.com/template.html?page=125

According to Farallon's Skyline PCI card product page the card also does not work in Beige G3/300 or /333 models (or G4 systems w/airport compatibility). See this Farallon Skyline Compatibility page for more info on the Beige G3/300-333 issue. This really limits the usefulness of this card. (Some Beige G3 models, B&W G3 and I guess G4/PCI (yikes) models.)

| CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates: |
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 18 new entries added this morning including Combo DVD/CDRWs, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CDRWs, and Hard Drives. (Current total 3,231 reports).
