New Spec Docs and Errata Info on G4 7450 CPU:
Michiro Isobe sent an email with links to new docs on the 7450 G4 CPU:
"
Dear Mike,
Motorola released part number specifications of MPC7450.
http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/MPC7450PNS_1.pdf
http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/MPC7450PNS_2.pdf
These documents include core voltage, power consumption and the list of errata.
It is interesting for me that current "PD" revision of 7450/733 operates with Vdd = 1.9V. It has some headroom to the absolute maximum of Vdd = 2.1V. On the other hand, 7400/500, which was announced Vdd = 1.8V, was operated with Vdd = 2.1V, the absolute maximum voltage.
This will show 7450 will be able to clock higher than 733MHz with higher core voltage and further cooling. And it also indicates higher clock models will be released in the near future.
In the list of errata, #9 and #11 seem to be the cause of low memory bandwidth result of STREAM and ThroughPut. #12 explains abnormal temperature reading.
Best Regards,
Michiro Isobe"
I had noted here in the past that I suspected chip errata may be the reason for some of the lower than expected test results with the G4/733.

(OT) PC Notebooks Hit 1GHz:
I'd still not trade my PowerBook G4 for one, but Cnet has a story on several PC manufacturers announcing the first 1GHz notebooks today. PCworld has a much better article with test comments on five 1GHz notebooks. They commented the Dell model had a GeForce2GO graphics chip with 32MB of DDR SDRAM, but I'm not sure I'd want a 15" LCD with a 1600x1200 resolution due to palettes, etc. being so tiny at that screen size/resolution. (And scaling down LCD resolutions, at least to full screen, makes text less sharp.)

PPCchecker 2.3 Now Supports G4 7450 and G3 755 CPUs:
PPC Checker is a small utility written by Michiro Isobe that will report whether your G3 CPU is Copper or Aluminum based and reports the CPU revision for both G3 and G4 CPUs. PPC Checker will also report if your G3 has a 10x bus/cpu ratio capability. (A plus for older Macs with lower bus speeds.) Version 2.3 now will report revisions of the 7450 chip used in the G4/667 and G4/733MHz Macs as well as the new 755 (G3) reported in some indigo iMacs. Note: So far the first shipping 7450's (G4/667 and G4/733MHz) have been
revision 2.0. If you have a later 7450 CPU, grab a PPC Checker screenshot (Command + Shift + Caps + 4) and send it to me.

CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 36 new entries added this morning including CD-ROM, DVD-ROMs, Combo DVD/CDRWs, CDRWs, removables and Hard Drives. (Current total 3,305 reports). Entries from after midnight are added the following day. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
