Tests of XLR8's DUAL G4/500 CPU Upgrade for Beige G3s
Over the weekend I had a chance to do some testing with XLR8's new MPe Dual G4/500 CPU upgrade for the Beige G3. I've posted a page with test results comparing performance against my dual G4/500 AGP system in Cleaner 5.02 (MPEG tests), iMovie2, Photoshop 5.5/6.0, and CineBench2000. For the Photoshop 5.5 filter tests, performance comparisons include a G4/733, Dual and Single G4/500 AGP system and a 1GHz Pentium III. (For the gamer that's curious, I've added Quake3 performance tests.) Click Here for Details.

Mac GeForce2MX Firmware and 1.1.1 Drivers from Apple:
Although v1.1.1 Nvidia drivers have been shipping for some time, they're now available to early G4 owners with 1.09 GeForce2MX extensions and 1017F firmware. What's odd is that several users at this versiontracker page noted the updater refused to update their machines despite the fact they had the earlier (1.09) drivers and 1017F firmware.
FYI: Tomeviewer reported errors trying to extract the flasher and several of the extensions with the download I had. (Only the 2d accelerator, Resource manager and Video accelerator extensions extracted successfully)

DVD-R Discs Available at Apple Store:
Previously some G4/733 owners with the DVD-R Superdrive had noted they didn't see the DVD-R discs available at Apple's store. They are now available for order in packs of 5 for $49.95. Estimated shipping as of today was listed as 6 days.

MCE's FireBay to Allow Using Expansion Bay Drives via Firewire:
MCE today announced their "FireBay" external dock that accepts Powerbook Firewire and Lombard Expansion bay devices (hard drives, CDRWs, etc.). This will allow these devices to be used with any Firewire port equipped Mac. The PowerBook G4 has no expansion bays, so this might be attractive for owners upgrading from a Lombard or PB Firewire model with expansion bay devices. (Of course being external it's not as compact as being able to install the device internally as you could with the previous PB models.)
Final pricing has not been determined on the FireBay which will be released in May they say. The press release is not at MEC's web site yet click details to see it.

(From the email press release)

" MCE Announces the FireBay External FireWire Docking Unit for PowerBook Expansion Bay Devices

Irvine, CA - Mac Components Engineered=B9s PowerBook Products Division (MCE PowerBook Products, an Apple Developer) today announced the FireBay, an external FireWire docking unit for PowerBook expansion bay devices. Once inserted into the MCE FireBay, PowerBook expansion bay devices such as hard disks, CD/DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, Zip, etc. can be used externally on any Mac or PowerBook with a FireWire port. Eligible expansion bay devices are those designed for the Apple PowerBook (FireWire) and the Apple PowerBook G3 Series AD 1999 (Bronze/Lombard). Release date is set for early May.

"Expansion bay devices are no longer confined to the PowerBook platform," said Arnold Ramirez, President of MCE PowerBook Products. "Now PowerBook owners can more fully realize their investment in expansion bay modules by the ability to use them as external FireWire devices across machines."

The MCE FireBay is a small, stackable bay which can accept one PowerBook expansion bay device at a time. Depending on the particular expansion bay device in use, the FireBay can be either bus-powered or can be powered by the included AC adapter. This product gives PowerBook users, or users of any FireWire-equipped Mac, the ability to use several of their expansion bay devices simultaneously, instead of just one at a time and only in the PowerBooks single expansion bay.

Of particular interest to multimedia authors is the ability now to capture digital video on location using their PowerBook and expansion bay hard drive, and then later simply inserting the same bay drive into the MCE FireBay connected to their PowerMac G4 desktop for final editing and rendering.

The MCE FireBay can be used as a single, stand-alone unit or multiple FireBays can be stacked on top of each other. In addition to a standard FireWire port on the rear, each MCE FireBay has a topside FireWire port which connects to a port underneath each unit when stacked, thereby eliminating the need for extra cables.

The MCE FireBay FireWire Expansion Bay will ship with FireWire driver software, a FireWire cable, and owner=B9s manual. Final pricing has not yet been determined.
