Firmware Update for w/VST ATA/66 Card to Add OS X Support
As noted here since last spring at the OS X and PCI IDE card reports page, the VST UltraTek ATA/66 PCI card is not OS X compatible. However OWC is to release today a shareware ($10) firmware update (plus A/V Utility) for the card to add OS X support. See this OWC page for more info and download link.
The card is currently $49.95 at OWC, the lowest priced PCI IDE controller I know of for the Mac. (Includes SoftRAID software for OS 9 also.)
If you try the firmware update with OS X, let me know.

Reader Report on Lightwave7 and GeForce4MX
" I just saw on the Mac Lightwave Resource page that you were looking for feedback from users using Lightwave 3D 7.0b on OSX with a GeForce4MX. I have that same setup on a Dual 1ghz + Cinema Display and I can say that it is a perfect dream to use. I have had NO problems or glitches in my 1.5 months of use so far (daily use).

In OS9, on the other hand, I still get black panels and glitches in the graph editor.

And the Radeon card I bought from you [actually a trade for a GF2MX OEM card last year.] a while back for my FD900 monitor is also working great in OSX with Lightwave on my dual 533.

Comments on 5.1 Audio, Game 3D Audio and OpenAL on the Mac:
After reading the recent reader review of the Midiman Audiophile 2496 vs Mac SoundBlaster Live cards, a reader asked about 5.1 audio support on the Mac. I wrote Brian Souder of Creative Labs who sent a reply with his comments on 5.1 audio, 3d gaming audio and OpenAL for the Mac. (Updated with reader comments.)

Airport Base Antenna Mods and Feature Rich Alternative Base Stations
A reader sent a note there's an article on Airport base station antenna mods at http://www.maceinsteiger.de/html/anleitung/airport_range.shtml. The article is in German, but google.com and altavista have web page translators that might help non-german readers. The FAQ's Networking section here also has info since last year on a site with a past article in English on antenna extender mods, as well as other Airport base station mods, capacitor repairs and more at linked off his main site at http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/index.html.)

While on the subject of Airport base stations, a reader sent a note that there was a post on March 9th at http://80211b.weblogger.com/ that commented on using Airport admin/firmware with an Orinoco R1100 base station which sells for about 1/2 the price of an Airport base. (Of course if this fails you have a useless base and I've not tried this myself. )

Personally of the non-Apple bases, I'm most interested in the Seimens Speedstream 2623 wireless base w/dual antennas, serial port (for ext. modem), a 3 port router, built-in print server (parallel port connection however, probably not mac compatible) and advanced firewall features. It's about $190 now on the web and this weekend was listed for sale at Circuit City. There's also a limited time $30 rebate offer [valid on purchases from computers4sure, PCconnection and Tiger direct from 2/1/2002-3/17/2002 per the PDF coupon] . The Speedstream has gotten very good ratings recently (editor's choice picks at PCmagazine's review, cnet's review and zdnet's review.) Both Cnet and Zdnet reviews said the Speedstream "puts the competition to shame", although the Apple airport base station was not included in the comparisons. I bought a Speedstream personally (just arrived this morning) since my original Airport base is very old and although still running, is in the range of the models that reportedly have the capacitor failures. (It's been one of the most used and useful products I've bought in the last 2 years without a doubt.)
Although the SpeedStream reviews I've read noted there was no ethernet cable included, there was one inside of the box as well as a card noting a free 1 year warranty extension if registered at Seimen's web site. For about $150 net (after rebate, less shipping/tax), I think it's a very attractive product. I only hope it will be as reliable as my original Airport base as been. For more info see the review links above and Speedstream.com.
[Note - one reader replied he's not been able to use the SpeedStream's print server with the Mac - even using VPC it didn't work properly.]

Developer Technical Notes on OS X 10.1.1 - 10.1.3
A reader (Stu) sent a link to this tech note over the weekend but I forgot to post it. (Thanks to Jmac for the reminder.) Apple has a developer tech note with info on the various changes from OS X 10.1.1 to 10.1.3 at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2043.html. (The bottom of the page also links to a PDF version of the document.)
