| Combo DVD-CDRW Drive for PowerBook G4/400-500Mhz Models |
Tim Chong sent a link to a page with info on a Combo DVD/CDRW slotted drive for the early PowerBook G4 (400/500mhz models). The page there notes/links to a Taxan of Japan site with a note the drive will be available in April 2002. (Hopefully some sources in this country will also offer the drive.)
As noted here when Apple offered the combo drive upgrade program to (only) PowerBook G4/550-667 early buyers (at $299), the OEM drive is Panasonic/Matsushita CD-RW CW-8121 (or 8121-B) as noted in our FAQ's PowerBook section.
The reason for Apple not offering the OEM drive for early powerbook owners was said to be a mounting/fit change in the later powerbooks. (I can't remember the source of that comment right now however.) I've been looking for a source of these drives personally since last fall when they were announced. (I'd like one for my PB G4 and for my Cube, if the price was right.)

| Reader's article on mods for DA DP533 module in Sawtooth G4 |
|
Over the last year or so several readers have bought (and modified for bus/cpu ratio resistor settings) OEM Digital Audio G4 Mac cpu modules for installing in early G4/AGP Macs. Sonnet has the only "retail" G4/AGP CPU upgrade - the Duet Dual G4/500 model which lists for $699 currently, although some readers have found it for $50 or so less on the web at times. One thing G4/AGP system owners should remember before buying a Dual G4 upgrade is the issue of early models having a rev 3 Uni-N (motherboard chipset) - which has problems with dual G4s in OS versions later than OS 9.1. (This is noted in an update to the Dec. 2000 article on Dual G4 CPU Module Swaps.) That article (and Sonnet's Duet errata page and the FAQ here) note how to use OS 9.1 or later Apple system profiler to check your Uni-N revision.
With that caveat mentioned, a reader (John Paul Mac Isaac) sent a note he's posted a page on installing a Dual G4/533 cpu module (w/resistor and heatsink/motherboard mods) in a sawtooth G4/AGP system. (Due to changes in the Digital Audio's Dual G4 module, it required him to remove the motherboard CDROM IDE connector also.) If you can't find a OEM DP module (sometimes ebay or other dealers list OEM modules for sale) or can't perform the modifications required for use in a 100mhz bus G4, the Sonnet Duet Dual G4/500 is the only retail upgrade for the G4/AGP systems to date. It comes with a heatsink adapter and requires no other mods to the system or motherboard. (But again remember to check your Uni-N revision first - regardless if the dual G4 you're installing is an OEM or Duet. Here's a page with info on how to check your Uni-N revision.)
For gigabit G4 owners, the March 1st, 2002 news page here has a note and link to a reader's Quicksilver CPU in Gigabit G4 Mac article. (The Quicksilver CPU modules have 12V tied to one of the mounting screw/points as he notes in that article.).

| Signups for the beta test of Andromeda Online |
| (from the email press release)
"
Legacy Games is proud to announce that we are now taking signups for the beta test of Andromeda Online (www.andromedaonline.net). Andromeda Online is a strategic starship wargame (multiplatform for the Mac, Windows and Linux). Players design a command crew, pick a stock starship or design their own, and go into battle! And while one-on-one battles are a blast, that's only the beginning! Why play with just one ship when you can command of fleet?! Command an armada of up to 500 scouts, fighters, cruisers, battleships, even space stations! Break them off into fleets and sub-fleets as you scour the galaxy looking for your opponents ships.
Andromeda Online offers unparalleled scalability! Play just one ship against your opponents, or use of fleet! A unique damage based point system ensures that one can use an infinite number of strategies, and still win. Hide in asteroid fields, nebulae were even a deadly plasma storm! Play games with as many as 10 players at a time, make teams and alliances, even play with or against the computer! Design your own crew and ships, offering a micromanagement design for players who are interested, and trade your ship designs online! Or, focus purely on the battle, learn to draw your opponents into hazardous areas, send in micro cloaked fighters, so small and invisible they are nearly impossible to hit! How will you grow your empire? The choice is up to you...
The Beta test is scheduled to begin April 29th. We are now taking players for the open beta test. Go to www.andromedaonline.net to learn more!
