OEM GeForce3 Mac Graphics Cards - Limited Supply $199.95
[These SOLD OUT within a few hours of posting here.]
OWC just called to say they have a limited supply of original GeForce 3 graphics cards (AGP with ADC and VGA ports) for $199.95. OWC has very few of these right now so they may sell out quickly at that price. (GeForce3 performance tests are included in my recent review of the 8500 Radeon on the Video articles page, Graphics card section.)

$59.95 Airport Cards (limited supply)
(Note: OWC later wrote they sold out of the current shipment as of 8AM Tuesday. Not sure if they're getting more in later...)
Site sponsor OWC sent a note today they have about 100 remaining airport cards from their current shipment as of this posting time.
" We have just received in the shipment of Airport cards we were expecting. We began taking orders for them about 10 days ago and of what we got, only about 100 of the 500 pieces received still remain available. Now that they are in stock, I would expect those remaining to go fast.
Price is $59.95. Cards are new, pulls with 90 Day OWC Warranty.
Once available stock is sold out, they will automatically be removed from the site.
    Best Regards,
    Larry O'Connor

Epson OS X Scanner Drivers
    "Hi Mike,
Last week I was doing a search of Apple's website under support for Drivers for my Epson Perfection 610 scanner and low and behold I came upon this link to developer drivers for most of Epson's current scanners. There was the usual disclaimer, and also a note about work in progress for integration into iPhoto. I just went back today to try and find it using a search and could no longer find it when I used the Epson keywords... But here is the direct link to Epson's developer site.

The driver actually works pretty well under OS X 10.1.3 I know a lot of people will be excited to be able to use their Epson Scanners under X again. They are still under development, so people must take the usual precautions, but they work beautifully for me. There are two files, Scan to file [and] a Twain driver (I have not actually tried the twain driver yet)
Regards and keep up the great work on the site! I have been a faithful reader from the beginning! David D."

That page has a menu to select the language and then a selection of several Epson scanner models. (The scanner list included Perfection 610,640,1200,1240,1250, 1640,1650,2450, Expression 1600,1680 and 1640XL.)

Powerlogix Announces PowerForce G4/550 ZIF CPU Upgrade for $299
(from the email press release)

" PowerLogix Announces Fastest ZIF Upgrade to Date

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- March 25, 2002 -- PowerLogix announced today the release of the PowerForce G4 550MHz ZIF card, the fastest ZIF upgrade to date. The PowerForce ZIF card is compatible with the Beige and Blue&White G3 Power Macs.

This new G4 ZIF card uses the low-powered 7410 chip from Motorola which is designed to draw less power and, thus, generate less heat than previous generations of the G4 chip. The PowerForce G4 ZIF 550 card uses the 7410 533MHz processor which runs at 533 in the Beige machines, but operates at a cool 550MHz in the Blue&White G3's.

"The card scores very favorably against models like the PowerMac G4-733, at a fraction of the cost of a new computer," said Robin Howdershelt, Marketing Director for PowerLogix. "This latest addition to the PowerForce ZIF family hits 1581 on the MacBench CPU scores and blows the doors off the 733MHz Apple machine with an FPU score of 1520 (vs. 1424 on the 733)."

Suggested retail pricing for this dynamic new product is a low low $299, $1300 less than the price of a new G4.

Orders for the card are being accepted now for delivery in 2-3 weeks. Customers in the US can order from Other World Computing by clicking here,

PowerLogix manufactures innovative products like the PowerForce, iForce and BlueChip processor upgrades for maximum performance from second generation and newer Apple Power Macs and clones. For more information, contact PowerLogix, 3921 Steck Avenue, A-105, Austin, Texas 78759, 877-849-2504, Fax: 512-795-2981,, "

Since there was a debate some time back about CPU marking, etc. on some Sonnet CPU upgrades, I know I'm going to get some emails saying that this product should be named the PowerForce G4/533 rather than G4/550, although PL is stating up front it uses a 533MHz G4 chip.

Dual 1GHz Owner Comments on Noise Reduction
    " Hi Mike,
After putting up with the high-pitched whine that my new Ghz Mac gave off for about 1 month or so, my wife's complaining about the noise forced my hand. (It was that or turn it off!!!) After testing by placing my hand over the back fan guard, it seemed pretty obvious that the major noise was coming from that single PSU fan. I took apart my machine and ripped off the PSU fan guard, about as ugly and scary a process as you might imagine, slapped it back together and wa-la! No high-pitched scream. The PSU fan still blows a lot of air, but that is totally acceptable. It really is the air blowing between the two guards that is the major culprit as far as I can tell.

If you get any responses on quieter PSU fans, please post the information or let me know. I'd like to buy a replacement for the PSU, but have no idea where to start.

There's no real pin-compatible replacement power supply for Gigabit Ethernet and later Macs as they have 28V power for the ADC monitors.
Ben apparently used the previous info here on removing the PS fan guard noted in at least one of last fall's Quicksilver noise reduction articles. (There were several articles on QS noise reduction here - more than one noted removing the PS fan guard, such as this article..)
