Powerlogix Bluechip G4 LS CPU Upgrade OS 9 Sleep Fix
(Update - after revisiting the page after posting this, there's a note the software/download will hopefully be available this weekend.)
Powerlogix has updated their beta software page noting a fix for the Bluechip G4 LS (Lombard) CPU upgrades to address the crashing when attempting to sleep in OS 9. As of 3:30 PM (Eastern time) there's no download link there but I wrote them to let them know about that omission. See for details.
Note they say OS 9.2.1 is required and it does not currently work with OS 9.2.2. (OS X does not require this patch.) The page also notes they're working on a fix for the Wallstreet version of the Bluechip G4 and that the LS version extension simply disables sleep if used with the Wallstreet.
If any readers try this with their LS cards after they include a download link, - email me with the results and post a Rate Your CPU Upgrade database report.

Dual G4 1GHz Lightwave 3D Benchmark Comparison
Just a quick note on Lightwave 3D v7.0b performance on a dual 1GHz G4 system running OS X. One of the popular LW benchmarks is the standard "raytrace" sample scene. Here's my score from the Dual 1Ghz, plus some other scores for the same test from a popular Lightwave 3D benchmarks site for other CPUs/Systems:

  • Dual 1GHz G4: 121 seconds (120.7 seconds)
  • Dual 800Mhz G4: 153 seconds
  • Single P4 4 2.4GHz: 123 seconds
  • Single P4 1.8 GHz: 187 seconds
  • Single Athlon XP (@1.76GHz): 171 seconds
  • Dual AthlonMP (@1.6GHz): 101 seconds
(another entry showed a dual MP @1.53Ghz reporting 92 sec.)
  • Dual Pentium III 1Ghz: 150 seconds
  • Quad Pentium III 850Mhz: 84 seconds
  • Dual P4 Xeon 2.2Ghz (512K L2): 77 seconds

(I didn't even know a 2.2GHz Xeon existed.) Sources of the other systems is Chris's Lightwave Benchmarks site. (Tests were run according to the instructions there.)

iTunes support files for Mitsumi 24/10/40 CDRW drive (used in some Que Firewire drives)
William Brennan recently posted a Drive Compatibility database report on his Que 24/10/40 Firewire CDRW drive, noting it had a Mitsumi mechanism that was not supported by iTunes. He sent copies of his modified iTunes support files (OS 9 and OS X) for the Mitsumi CR-48X9TE drive for adding to the series of files available in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section. You can download his files by clicking here.
(As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support.) These files replace the existing Mitsumi files of the same name (use Sherlock to find the locations of the original files - and to avoid permissions issues in OS X you may want to boot into OS 9 to replace the OS X file.)

More Reader Reports on OS X Patches for Diablo II and L.O.D.
I've added more reader comments on the Diablo II/LOD update to the OS X Diablo II update reports page. The latest comments include another report on dual monitor issues (no video on the 2nd monitor after exiting the game - logging out/back in a quicker way to restore the 2nd display rather than rebooting.) Also included are comments on Nvidia drivers with the game. (Even in OS 9 versions, in the past ATI cards have generally had better performance in Diablo than the Nvidia cards. I was hoping the OS X update/later drivers might have improved this.)

Acard's A/V Utility - Not Compatible with SIIG ATA/133 card? (Acard chip based)
Last October 30th, the news page here noted that Acard released a "A/V utility" for older Mac (pre-G3) owners that had the stuttering audio issue with files played back from drives connected to Acard ATA/66 PCI cards. Early in November I posted a page with reader feedback on using the utility with ATA/66 Acard controllers (including the Sonnet Tempo ATA/66 card.)
Recently a reader reported in the drive database here that the Acard A/V utility didn't work with the Acard based SIIG ATA/133 card. (Acard OEMs their cards to several resellers who sell them under their brand name - however looking at the card/controller chip shows it's an Acard design). I suggested he write Acard about this and he emailed me with the reply from Acard that said (verbatum quote) "Now SIIG can not use this utility ."
I wonder if the issue is compatibility with the ATA/133 card's controller chip (since the SIIG card should have the same chip/firmware as the Acard ATA/133 card.)
If any Acard based ATA/133 controller owners have used the A/V utility successfully - let me know.

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive /Cardreader Compatibility Database Updates
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 14 new reports added today. The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 6,986 reports. Here's a summary listing of today's new reports:

    Multi-Format Card Reader Reports:
  • USB VST Tri-Media used w/B&W G3 (OS 9.2)
(noted using with several macs, didn't note if any drivers required)

  • IDE Pioneer DVR-104 in G4/AGP (OS 9.2)

    DVD-ROM Drive Reports:
  • IDE Artech 16X DVD-ROM in G4/AGP (OS 9.2)

  • Lite-On 32x12x40 in Beige G3 (OS 9.1)
(doesn't have any software to test the drive - suggested using Tomeviewer to get authoring support extensions, but then you'd still need a modified itunes support file - see FAQ here)

    Firewire CDRW Drive Reports:
  • Lacie 32x10x40x used w/B&W G3 (OS X)
(unknown drive mechanism type - suggested using OS 9 ASP to check)

(see Firewire articles page here for build guides to portable FW cases)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
