| HP ScanJet 4570c/5500c Software v5.5.6 for OS X |
I don't own an HP scanner, but a FYI on a recent HP driver update for the 5500 (and 4570) from a reader mail today:
Mike, After several false leads with HP telephone support about updated drivers
for their Scanjet 5500c (suffering slowdown under 10.2.3 & .4), including a
call this morning which failed to mention that their web page now lists version 5.5.6, a whopping 165mb download, revised from previous version 5.1.1.
Not tested yet, but one has to assume system slowdown has been dealt with. (there were past discussions here on HP communications driver slowdown with OS X as far back as last fall.)
I haven't noticed anyone else mention this update unless I have been asleep recently.
Peter"
Since no link was provided I went to the HP site drivers page and searched for "Scanjet 5500c" there, then clicked on the OS X link on the results page which led to this page (long link) that lists the HP ScanJet 4570c/5500c Photo and Imaging Software v5.5.6 (dated Feb. 28th, 169.13 MB). |

| Reader Tips on Uninstalling Java 1.4.1 Update |
Two reader mails from yesterday afternoon in reply to the Safari owner report on problems with a stock website's java after the 1.4.1 update in yesterday's news:
"Hi Mike,
You should be able to revert to a previous JDK (Java version) by
replacing the symlink at
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK
You will need to be root (or use sudo) to do this, e.g.:
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
sudo rm CurrentJDK
[enter admin password]
sudo ln -s 1.3.1 CurrentJDK
To go back to 1.4.1, repeat the steps above, but replace 1.3.1 with
1.4.1 on the last line as follows:
sudo ln -s 1.4.1 CurrentJDK
Regards,
Alex"
Another reader wrote with another method:
"
Hi Mike, We got email from Apple on uninstalling Java 1.4.1:
How to uninstall Java 1.41
Mike Hay the developer responsible for the new Java plugin has informed me
that you can disable/enable the Java 1.4.1 update in the following way:
After installing the Java 1.4.1 Update, you may switch the version of Java
that Safari uses by:
(a) moving the bundle "JavaPluginCocoa.bundle" out of
"/Library/Internet Plug-Ins" to the Desktop -- Safari will use Java 1.3.1
(b) moving the bundle "JavaPluginCocoa.bundle" from the Desktop back into "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins" -- Safari will use Java 1.4.1
Apparently, the bug in this article is a known issue with the Java 1.4.1
implementation according to Apple. It affects only a few applets, but that
isn't much consolation to a loyal user of one of those affected sites. It
is also interesting that the PC running XP does not have this problem with
Java. Now that we know how to uninstall Java 1.41 in OS X for these
situations we can use the Java plugin that works best. Pass the word.
Thanks,
Mike

| Game Anti-Cheat Programming Help for Macs Needed |
| (from a reader mail sent to me and several other sites)
"
Hi,
I'm mailing you this on behalf of the developer.
It's a call for help for a Anti Cheat system for the UT mod Tactical Ops.
There is a large scene for the Tactical Ops mod for UT. A lot of us are
on the Mac. To block cheating in the game there is two different approaches. One based on scripting that checks the handling in the game and one external application that insures all files are unpatched and not modified and then communicate this with the server over a secure connection! The last software is not available for the MacOS 9/X - at the moment it's only win32API driven.
Both systems need each other to secure the game and to make sure no one is cheating.
I have talked to the developer and he need coding help from a Mac
programmer to work from scratch and create a client software for the MacOS9/X.
If you feel that you could solve this and enable us on the Mac to be part of this - please contact SabrWolf, the developer!

The only Mac game anti-cheat software I know of is the Punkbuster support in Quake3 v1.32 for OS X and later updates to RTCW, but no Mac UT versions used it.

| Update to free Vidi TV Tuner software for Formac Studio DV/TV Device |
| A reader sent a note that there's an update to the Vidi software for Formac Studio DV/TV mentioned here several times last month.
"Mike,
Mitz has a newer version of Vidi out again... here's the stuff that's
updated. Quite a powerhouse for being so lightweight (213k download!).
Rich
3/11/2003
0.3d6
Added an option to split movies into &glt;2GB files. Fixed a bug that
prevented deletion of movies saved by Vidi until the user logged out.
Fixed audio problems with Studio firmware version 1.0.7. Fixed a bug
with recordings scheduled to run through midnight. Made the format of
date and time fields conform to the settings in System Preferences.
Improved performance and reliability. Made Vidi automatically terminate
old versions of Vidi Server when upgrading. Made screen gamma
adjustment in full screen mode optional and fixed a bug in restoring
gamma when full screen mode is exited."
The Vidi home page is

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 3 new reports added (reader entries from Yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). (*Entries missing info, having no useful info, etc. are deleted. I'm just tired of emailing over and over for missing info, sorry. Also Search for answers, don't post questions there.*) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 10,031 reports.

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
