"
Casady & Greene is pleased to announce the release of Clone'X, the tool that allows you to Clone, Restore and Copy your system to one or multiple computers. Clone'X, originally developed by TED in France, was the first System duplication and restore tool for Mac OS X. Clone'X supports Mac OS 10.x, as well as Mac OS 8.6-9.x.
Clone'X is available for $49.95 as an electronic download from the C&G web site. The physical product will be shipping soon.
"
Mike Bombich's Carbon Copy Cloner (Donation-ware) has been a very popular OS X disk clone tool with readers since it's release.

| First reports on HP's Scanjet 4570/5500 OS X 5.5.6 Software (not good) |
| Two HP scanner owners sent comments on the 5.5.6 driver update noted in Wednesday's news:
"
I have downloaded and I am using the latest Scanjet 4570/5500 drivers from HP.
It appears to have solved the problem of eating up your CPU cycles but now
my hard drive will no go to sleep.
Joel
(I asked for OS version/system/scanner info)
I am using a PowerMac 450Mgz DP box running 10.2.4 with a 40 gig hard drive and 2 gig of memory I have an HP Scanjet 5500. "
Another reader wrote:
"
Mike, Incredible as it may seem, but latest incarnation of HP Scanjet Manager software version 5.5.6 still hogs up to 85% of CPU after few hours in background on my G4 867 running 10.2.4!
HP Tech support say that this latest driver only supports 10.2.3 and are unable to offer any help, though web site states 10.2.3 or higher.
I have also found that scanning remains buggy using desktop software 'buttons' and Photoshop plug-in.
Four months and still waiting on HP...(anyone use a Canoscan?)

| MSI's new Nvidia FX5800 Ultra-TD8X listed as Mac compatible? |
(Update - MSI called me back to say that until they can verify MacOS compatibility they are removing the note from the page, saying they would restore the info later after they can verify if the card works with any MacOS version.)
(original news item follows) Gilbert D. sent a note that MSI's new FX5800 Ultra-TD8X is listed as mac compatible - in one section ("Operating Systems and API support") of that product page - however the "Compatibility" section lists only Windows and Linux support. I called MSI this morning to ask if they had tested with Macs and they are to call me back this afternoon after checking with their tech support/engineering staff. (see the above update for their reply.) In the past there have been some similar PC nvidia vendor page notes on MacOS compatibility that turned out to be incorrect, as well as some past reports here on some G4 towers firmware having a bit of Nvidia code for limited OS X functionality, although without a Mac ROM in the card full support usually isn't there. Attempts to cross-flash PC Nivida cards after the Geforce3 (non-Ti model) have not been successful as far as I know (no successful reports of Geforce4MX or Geforce4Ti flashing that I remember.)

| Marathon Wall Mount for Apple LCD Displays |
"
Last night I recived my new Wall mount for a cinema display from Marathon
Computer
http://www.marathoncomputer.com/lcdrsdwall.html
(the linked page notes Apple 15in and 17in, not the larger Cinema Displays-Mike)
I will tell you the instructions were not the most logical, it took a few
times of reading them, but after that the install was a snap. You take the
kick stand off the back with a tool they provide, then you mount a plate to
the same thing the kick stand was on, and then you mount an other plate to
the wall, and they just kinda snap together... But I will say, it looks
sharp when its done. If its something you want, its worth the $125.

| More Notes on Verax MDD G4 Noise Reduction Kits |
In reply to Monday's news page post on Verax's MDD G4 noise reduction fans/heatsink kit:
"
Hi, according to this article:
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/jes-10.03.03-000/
there will be probably two variants:
1. Complete version (including PSU fans)
2. version without PSU fans
Translation (of german original page):
Verax has also replaced the unregulated 60mm fans of the PSI by
regulated 65 mm models. The temperature sensor sits in the hot air flow
of the currency generator. According to Weissweiler (Verax CEO), Verax
will probably offer also a cooling kit without PSU fans as Apple
already offers replacement parts that are more silent (than the
original fans). Verax wants to deliver in April, but the price has not
yet been finalized.
Volker
"
Apple $19.xx (shipping and handling) MDD G4 Power supply/Fan exchange kits for the original MDD models are not shipping yet. (The Systems page/G4 Macs section has the August 2002 article on MDD G4 PS fan replacement and there's a G4noise.com site dedicated to the noise issue with their original G4 MDD models.)

| First reader report/tests with Powerlogix Dual G4/933 vs Single G4/733 |
| Although the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has many reports on other models I had a reader recently ask about the Dual G4/933 PL upgrade. Here's the first reader report on that model tested in his G4/733:
Reviewer's Name: Hector Manduley Date Submitted: 3/12/2003 Rating (1 to 10): 9 Manufacturer: PowerLogix G4 Rated Speed (CPU/Cache MHz): Dual 933 Cache Size: L2 256KB, L3 2MB (Times 2) Mac Type: Quicksilver 733 Comments: "I recently upgraded my single 500 to a Sonnet Dual 500 and found a nice difference. Since then I was able to trade that machine for a 733Mhz Quicksilver, which rates between the Single 500 and the Dual 500 in speed.
I figured this would be the case and wold upgrade the 733 and it's puny cache. I upgraded to a PowerLogix Dual 933 (special on their site only for $799). As before I timed some common tasks to check improvements in speed. I was very pleased and installation was very easy.
(Test 1) Startup speed: While I didn't expect much, and since my startup drive runs from a PCI Adaptec card your results will vary.
Apple 733: 1:31, PowerLogix DP933: 1:19
(Test 2) Rip a 47.1 min CD to MP3 160kbps.
Apple 733: 4:59, PowerLogix DP933: 3:45
(Test 3) Max Rip Speed
Apple 733: 11.5x, PowerLogix DP933: 14.0x
(Test 4) Virtual PC6 Startup
Apple 733: 41 (sec.), PowerLogix DP933: 30 (sec.)
(Test 5) Export a 1:39 Complex iMovie to CD Quality
Apple 733: 2:39 PowerLogix DP933: 1:57
Overall a great improvement and the OS is so fluid now! Definitely reassures my belief that OSX loves dual processors.
I hope this helps others. Thank you for a great site Mike!
(I asked if he had seen any wake-from-sleep issues)
I did not find any wake from sleep issues when I upgraded to the Dual
933 from Powerlogix. I forgot to mention it since it didn't come up.
I'll let you know if I get any weird issues later..."
I didn't see any wake from sleep problem with a PL dual 1GHz in Digital Audio system I reviewed previously, nor the Giga Designs G4/800 and G4/1GHz I reviewed, but have seen it with a 1.25GHz upgrade in that system. You can search for the latest reports (most recent shown first) on any CPU upgrade brand (selectable by brand and mac model). It's updated every weekenday. (Summary listings of each day's additions are noted at the bottom of the news page every day. The entry page is linked on the search page for those that want to post their reports. Before/after tests are encourages - see my reviews for sample apps/games/benchmark tests you can run.)

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
