| Airport 3.3.1 Update for Panther |
| I've not seen it appear in Software Updates running 10.3.2 here (yet), but Versiontracker lists the Airport 3.3.1 update today. The download link there didn't work for me (file path error) as of appx 5:30PM Eastern Time today, but the download link at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportsoftwareupdate.html is working. Here's the changes noted in 3.3.1 (from 3.3) at the Apple page:
"
About AirPort 3.3.1
AirPort Update improves reliability of AirPort connections when changing network locations. The update is recommended for all users with an AirPort Extreme and AirPort enabled computer or an AirPort Extreme base station.
Requirements:
- Mac OS X 10.3 or later
- AirPort Extreme-ready computer with internal AirPort Extreme card
"
I usually follow the old rule of "it if ain't broke, don't fix it" but I welcome reader feedback on this update. (Include your mac model/os/airport hardware info in reports. thanks.)
For reader reports on the previous Airport 3.3 update which added WPA support even for non-extreme clients (and included firmware v5.3 for the AE base), see this page.

| NEC ND-2500A (8x DVD-R/+R burner) reports on iDVD working with Lacie profile for Panther |
Just as a FYI - despite the fact that Lacie (and the author of Patchburn II) don't say the burn support profiles enable iDVD support, I've had two NEC ND-2500A owners (as well as DVR-107D owners in the past) report iDVD worked after the added burn support profile. Remember iDVD requires a G4 CPU or better and does not support external drives however in any configuration. iDVD also does not burn to DVD+R media (to date). Use DVD-R media, although the old trick to mount a DVD-RW disc in the finder before running iDVD has been reported to work also. Another tip is to set Energy Saver to not allow drive sleep as some drives are prone to going to sleep if a disc is left in the drive for long idle periods like the encoding phase of iDVD. I prefer to let iDVD fully encode the movies before pressing burn/inserting a disc to burn.
(The Lacie burn support profile for Panther is linked in the FAQ's DVD section as well as the Reader reports on Patchburn II for Panther.)

| First reader report on GeeThree Multiport (front FW, USB and Cardreader ports) for G3/G4 Towers |
Thursday's news page had info and a reader request for owner feedback on the GeeThree Sweetport/Multiport Front panel FW, USB and Cardreader ports for G3/G4 Towers. Here's the first reader report on using one:
"
I have a Quicksilver G4 2002. I had a Zip drive installed in the lower bay below the Super Drive. (Multiport panel goes in the lower/ZIP bay, for QS models only the Compactflash/Microdrive slots are present due to space issues.)
Read the instructions in the manual (It gives separate instructions for the different types of computers) and installed the sweetport (multiport) in about 20 minutes.
After connecting the short Firewire and USB cables that it comes with in the back of my computer, I fired it up and plugged in my Firewire SmartDisk with no luck. This sounded like a very familiar problem with both Firewire and USB devices.
I reached around back unplugged and replugged both cables and "Presto"! No problems since.
Very Cool and "Convenient" product. I was surprised it was only $99.00
Tom P.
(Even though the PCI card included is just a Hub basically I asked if he had tested deep sleep/wake from sleep to verify there were no problems seen.)
Yes, I just did and it slept, woke, USB flas mounted & SimpleTech Firewire
mounted also. So far so good.
I am running OS 10.3.2 933 mhz G4.

| UT2004 Tips from Programmer Ryan Gordon |
| (from a reader post late last week - some of you may have already seen this but just in case)
"
UT2004 - Tips from Ryan Gordon
I talked to Ryan about some UT2004 stuff and he was very nice and took the time to answer my questions I had about the demo and some about the release.
Though many threads in the app, bot AI comes down to this when I asked why the bot AI does not appear to use a the second CPU even though i see many threads.
(Ryan's comments)
"The Unreal Engine is pretty seriously resistant to multithreading at this point, so this definitely won't be in the retail version, sorry"
Window mode. I wanted to know a QUICK way to get to the desktop and back and be able to leave UT2004 and get mouse focus outside the game.
(Ryan's comments)
"There's a "Full screen" checkbox on the "Display" settings
page. Uncheck it and it will switch to windowed mode.
Alternately, you can hit Option+Return to toggle between
windowed and fullscreen.
Alternately, you can run the game from the terminal:
cd /where/i/installed/ut2004demo/System
./ut2004-bin -windowed
Alternately, you can change your .ini file:
[SDLDrv.SDLClient]
StartupFullscreen=False"
It was the Option+Return that i wanted and to get mouse focus outside of the game window you do this
(Ryan's comments)
"Control-G to grab/ungrab mouse input from the window. The cursor doesn't actually appear until you click outside the game window after ungrabbing it (this is fixed for the retail release, though)."
Next up was map loading speed as it is very slow IMHO so I asked about it his reply
"We're looking into changing the file i/o code a little for the retail
release, but I can't promise anything."
There you go. i hope that info helps you as much as it helped me.
Later, Russ
"
Mentioned later in the thread were comments on trying to improve performance (lower audio related cpu usage) but reducing sound channels from 32 to 8 in the INI file (a tip used with older versions of UT also), although some single CPU owners reported this didn't help a lot.

| Reader Tip for using Belkin USB to PDA Adapter Beta Drivers with 10.3.x |
(from a reader mail )
"
Not sure if this was the place to send this, but I found a workaround
for using the beta drivers from Belkin (http:///www.belkin.com/beta)
for their USB PDA serial adapter under Panther.
Belkin offers some unsupported beta drivers for 10.2, but not
specifically for Panther (10.3.) The drivers are intended for 10.2,
and if they are installed under Panther, there will be an error dialog
at login stating that the kext (kernel extension) file was installed
improperly, etc. It turns out that the only the problem is that the
permissions are set incorrectly.
Open the terminal and issue the following commands:
cd /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo chmod -Rv 755 BelkinSerialDriver.kext
(The -v flag is optional.) This command corrects the permissions for all the files contained in the kext package. Restart, and the device
should function correctly.

You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
