Intel CPU Mac Mini Inside Photos (shows CPU Socket)
There was a question if the new Intel CPU Mac Mini had a socketed CPU (like the new iMacs) or soldered-in like the MacBook Pro. A reader sent a link to a page with Intel CPU Mac Mini internal photos that shows a CPU socket:

" Mike, Good news! The new Intel mini has a socketed cpu. Check it out:
http://nak.journalspace.com/
Bob G "

I can't get the larger photos to load here in 10.3.9/Safari (even when unchecking block pop-ups) but Bob said he's at work on a PC and sent a copy of the large motherboard photo showing a CPU socket.

Follow-up on Intel CPU Mac Disk Utility Freeze formatting USB 2.0 Hard Drives
" I wanted to follow up and note that the On The Go drives (portable USB 2.0 + Firewire 800 cased model) will format and partition properly when using the Firewire cable. SO this problem is most certainly with the USB ports or implementation. (he previously reported that attempting to format the drives on an Intel CPU Mac via USB that Disk Utility would hang.
I asked if he could use the drives OK on the USB ports after formatting-Mike
)
Yes. Once formatted I can use the drive USB or FW., but I've always been able to mount partitions using USB the problem has been partitioning and formatting. Since we're using this for FW booting I'm not overly concerned about it but at some point I'm going to have to figure out if the problem is with the ports.

Incidentaly, one of our techs had formatted his drive from a PC with USB with no problems prior to me getting a hold of it. So I'm thinking this may be an issue with Apple's implementation of USB on the Intel Macs.

(He later wrote that although an Apple develper doc said:

"...To create an external USB or FireWire disk that can boot an Intel-based Macintosh computer, select the GPT disk partition scheme option using Apple Disk Utility. Starting up an Intel-based Macintosh using an APM disk is not supported."

That he was able to boot from an APM formatted external drive.-Mike)

Actually I found out from another site that you can indeed use a APM scheme to boot the mac. The actual issue is that you cannot install an Intel OS X from a PPC OS X. So I partitioned the drive on the PPC using APM and then moved the drive to the Intel Mac (17" core duo) and used CCC to clone the drive.
That clone boots the Intel iMac fine. Actually I first used Disk Utilities restore function. The odd thing was that all the normally invisible folders (etc, var, usr) were all visible.

I also used Netrestore, which is our standard op for imaging here and that worked fine (though I get an applescript error). Beware that thte older 2.0b version of netrestore will apparently hang on the verification stage.

If any other Intel CPU Mac owner tries formatting a USB 2.0 Hard drive, let me know if you have any problems (or not). Include Mac model and drive details in reports. Thanks.

Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) 1.8GHz SP Firmware Update for Tiger
I missed this last night but Apple yesterday posted a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) Firmware Update (Mac OS X 10.4.3) v 1.1

" About this Update
This update is only for the 1.8 GHz, single-processor Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer and supports installation on Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later. Also improves the reliability of your Power Mac G5, especially after it has been inactive for two hours."

It sounds like the installer was changed for OS X Tiger support (rather than the actual firmware) but I don't have one of these systems to verify that.

CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 1 new and 1 updated report added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,615 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • Updated report on NEC ND-3550A in G4/AGP (OS X 10.4)
(Noted installing a Patchburn 4 profile made ASP list all the media the drive actually supports. Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the digital audio model.)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE (SerialATA onboard) Maxtor DiamondMax 11 (MAX6H400F0) 400GB in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
