Update released to Mac Office 2008 'Microsoft AutoUpdate.app'
From a reader mail today:

" Mike, You may want to suggest that Microsoft Office 2008 users go the Help menu of any Office 2008 application and do manual check for updates.
The reason is Office 2008 installer disc installed Microsoft AutoUpdate.app version 2.1.0 and MS has released a new version 2.1.1 that will be required to obtain the upcoming Office 2008 updates (expected ~11-Mar-08).

Office 2008 users can tell what is currently installed by going to the Help menu in any Office application, like Entourage v12.0 and clicking on "Check for Updates" then check the About AutoUpdate. The old AutoUpdate will find and install the new AutoUpdater; however, the new updated Microsoft AutoUpdate.app v 2.1.1 will not show up when you click on the option to View installed Updates.

While it is required to obtain the upcoming Office 2008 Updates, it is not considered an Office update. Also, the Microsoft AutoUpdate.app is no longer in the folder with the Office applications, like in 2004. It has been move to the "MAU2.0" folder. If this sounds confusing, it is just another example of the way MS does business.
-Dick"

As of May 5th, the Microsoft AutoUpdate for Mac 2.1.1 Update is also available at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx.

ATI 2600XT Update coming? (reader notes on testing)
(Update - on 3/10/2008 apple posted ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update. If this update helps with graphics/freezing issue you had previously let me know.)

"just want to let you know that apple is working on the graphics problem with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Cards.
I got an invitation to an AppleSeed to test a Mac Pro update. After the login it says its an bios update for the ati cards. It's not ready yet but the download should be possible in the next days...
So, there's coming something to solve the problems...
(I asked if it was an actual flash update to the card or an updated driver/or ROM Xtender file (which is sort of like a software loaded firmware/patch file)-Mike)
it's a new rom version for the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT:
    ROM-Version: 113-B1480A-252
I'm not sure what it was before, something like 113-B1480A-234 (perhaps -236, which a reader said his 2600XT card has.-Mike) - the last three numbers went up.
Officially it's not public yet - just want to let you know that Apple is working on the problem.
No more freezes with the new ROM :)"

I'll write an ATI contact today although when it comes to releases on OEM/Apple products often lips are tight... (Will also ask about the promised ATI Displays update for Leopard - at least a separate release of the version included with the G5 X1900 edition software).
