Apple posts MacBook Air SMC Update 1.0
I don't own a MacBook Air but spotted this at Apple's site:

"About MacBook Air SMC Update 1.0
The SMC Update fine tunes the speed and operation of the internal fan.
This update is recommended for all MacBook Air systems. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process."

Apple posts ATI 2600XT Firmware Update
The firmware update for ATI 2600XT cards a reader mentioned testing on March 1st has been released:

"About ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update
This update is for Mac Pro computers with one or more ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards installed, running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later with the Leopard Graphics Update.

It updates the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card firmware on all of the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards in the Mac Pro to improve system stability.
Requirements: OS X 10.5.2 or later, Leopard Graphics Update"

If this update helps with graphics/freezing issue you had previously let me know.
(FYI - I had a pre-2008 Mac Pro owner running a 2600XT card that wrote the firmware updater would not apply on that system (saying it wasn't needed). He had not seen any graphics/freezing issues with the card in that system either.) For those running the 2600XT in the previous Mac Pro - if you're not having problems I'd leave well enough alone (don't try installer check edits/patches, etc.) in case the firmware update causes any problems with older Mac Pros - maybe not but remember the golden rule "if it ain't broke- don't fix it"...

Neverwinter Nights 2 (and Call of Duty 2) problems w/Nvidia 8800GT card
(BTW - I later had a single CPU 2008 Mac Pro owner (with all updates applied) write NWN2 runs fine on his system w/8800GT card and even supports his FireWave. And a COD2 owner wrote he's using v1.3 OK (and non-DVD patch) with his 8800GT.)

"Neverwinter Nights 2 is not compatible with Mac Pro's (Early 2008) upgraded to the 8800 GT video card. The game immediately crashes on startup 100% of the time. I filed a bug report with Aspyr and got this response:
"Unfortunately the NVIDIA Geforce 8800 video card in the new Mac Pro is not supported for NeverWinter Nights 2 . This video card was not around during the development of the game and so we could not test it.

This issue has been brought to our attention previously and we are in contact with Apple to try and find a solution."

Amazing that the developer would write "directly to the metal" so-to-speak. I thought that's why we had OpenGL and drivers so developers wouldn't have to rely on coding for specific graphics cards. Needless to say, after pre-ordering NWN2 through Amazon, getting priority shipping only to have a game that is worthless and won't work on my machine is very disappointing.
    -Bryan P."

FYI: For 8800GT owners with game problems (quits on start, etc.) - try trashing the game prefs/config file perhaps (especially if you recently had swapped in the 8800GT card and used an ATI 2600 previously - maybe something in the game prefs/config and trashing it will cause a new one to be created on the next run.)
Another 8800GT owner wrote he's seen the same problem with Call of Duty 2:

" Hi Mike, I've just read the news about Neverwinter Nights 2 and I've the same issue with an other game from Aspyr. Call of Duty 2 is not compatible with Mac Pro's (Early 2008) upgraded to the 8800 GT video card, all updates done (10.5.2 and graphics). The game immediately crashes on startup 100% of the time. I send a bug report to Apple, I've tried to get a ticket from Aspyr on support page but I couldn't get an email answer.
    Regards, Etienne "

I later had another COD (v1.3)/8800GT owner say he ran the game OK.
The COD2 notes reminded me of a mail last month from a MacBook Pro owner (Nvidia 8600M graphics) on performance (severe stutter) problems he'd seen with Call of Duty 2:

"I just wanted to tell you and your readers about problems that we've been having with Call Of Duty 2 and the NVidia 8600M GT that's in the new MacBook Pros. The game is unplayable due to stutter. This isn't a low-framerate issue, but a continual stutter, about twice a second, which happens even when you're in some of the game menus. It seems that there have been numerous reports of problems with this card, but there hasn't been any news from Apple about this. The Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 didn't fix this.
Just wanted to put this out there, and find out if anyone else has experienced this.
    Thanks, Dave"

BTW - another reader later replied that his Mac Pro w/8800GT also had problems with another Aspyr game after applying the 1.05a update to Star Wars: Empire at War. (Corrupted menus after the update.) After seeing the problems with the 1.05a update with his 8800GT, he reinstalled the game from the original disc.

G5 Tower Random Shutdowns/Tips page updated
Two more reports added to the page of Feedback on G5 Tower Random Shutdowns, one noting Apple replaced processor modules (bad thermal sensor) on 2 of his systems and another follow-up from a reader that had used the 'reduced performance" option for a couple years and finally replaced the system with a new Mac Pro after getting a $1700 repair estimate on the G5 tower.
