I'm taking some time off so there will be no Sunday news. There is an update to the 3D Gaming News I just posted. Check back on Monday for more news. For those with tech support questions please check the new FAQ. You might find the answer there or in the site topics/articles/reviews here. Thanks.
U2 SCSI Update: I've added links on the U2 SCSI Cards Review to pages with ATTO Tools R/W graphs showing performance at various test file sizes for both HFS and HFS+ for all three cards (2940U2W, ATTO U2, Miles U2). Tests in the B&W G3 with a U2 Cheetah are (loaner from MacGurus) are underway.
$49 3Dfx Note: [Update: Larry of OWC wrote to say they are now shipping an adapter (Mac/VGA) with each card starting tomorrow - and that it will be provided free of charge to those that ordered previously and need one.] Devin Comiskey sent a note that the $49 OEM Power3D Cards on sale at OWC do not come with any Mac adapters (all vga connectors). If you need adapters for Mac monitor connections or video cards - see the FAQ, 3Dfx section for a Griffin's adapter/cable kit. If all you need is the monitor adapter it may be cheaper to find one at a computer retailer (CompUSA, etc.). If you have a VGA connectored monitor and VGA output on your Mac you don't need any adapters. A reader notes that his Wacom A4 size Ultrapad works fine wih the new G3s using a USB/Serial adapter: " Returning from the wintel wilderness after 4 years, I wanted to use a Wacom A4 Ultrapad (serial) for PC on my new B&W G3. Two readers respond to the note on a PF ZIF upgrade not waking from sleep reported in Yesterday's news: " Hi Mike
" Hi Mike! I enjoy your site very much. Chris from House of Coins (who did the great animated gif logo used at the site on some pages) wrote saying if you were impressed with 3dfx's Flash page (noted in yesterday's news) - check out theirs at: http://www.projektk3.com/flash/frameset-flash.html Thanks to all of you that responded to Adam's post in yesterday's news. He writes: " Mike, I've updated the OS X feedback page with a note that the Feb 99 build ReadMe file is online. [Update - as of Sunday night the page had been pulled] Glenn Batuyong copied me (and many other sites) on his complaint letter to Heat.Net about a lack of support for online Mac Gaming: " I'm writing this letter to address the issue of @Home network continuing to ignore my inquiries into why it doesn't support Macintosh games on its Heat.Net when, in fact, Heat.Net states on its own website that it does support Mac games (and quite a few also, including Unreal, Warcraft 2, Command & Conquer, etc.). The editors of the Games channel section of @Home have sent me ZERO replies to my e-mail requests over a period of months. It really is annoying because if a user clicks on the Online Games button, a screen will pop up saying that Heat.Net does not support Mac games and that they are "actively seeking" some. Well, it's been almost a year since that screen has been created (I checked its post and creation date) and am I supposed to believe that there are none (I think not!). I've already contacted numerous Macintosh news sites and gaming sites and other readers are having similar experiences with @Home. I hope some pressure for truth in this matter will clear everything up. I don't want to have to contact the Better Business Bureau because I like my cable modem service besides the fact that they seem to disregard me as a viable game player. I think @Home would be making a big mistake in ignoring a large number of paying customers (they still haven't updated their Mac support page to address setting up a DHCP connection from the control panel). Thanks for all those that are entering their G3 upgrade info in the CPU Upgrade Survey. By continuing to keep the survey running the database will be constantly updated with new information. Other Net News:
G3 CPU Card Owners Survey: If you've bought any brand of G3 CPU upgrade (for any Mac model) - take our new G3 CPU Card Survey and let us know how you rate it, how fast you're going and the Mac type you're using it in and a paragraph of your comments on it (problems/compatibility/observations). It only takes a minute and your experience could be valuable to other Mac owners. This is an on-going, constantly updated database of actual owner reports. For other recent site news/features links, see the Recent Site Features page. Note: Before sending tech support related questions please check the Freq. Asked Questions, Site Contents, CPU Card reviews/articles, SCSI reviews articles, Graphics card reviews, Tips/Misc, Message Boards and Help pages - in many cases the answers to your questions are there and they have far more detail than I can list in an email. For Apple G3 system info - see the G3-ZONE. For links on recent articles, see the Recent Features page. Please try the Men in Mac Help page as an alternative on requests for tech support to help me be able to spend more time on reviews and getting caught up in mail. Thanks. |
