DrBott's $149.95 DVI to ADC LCD Display Adapter:
DrBott today announced they're taking pre-orders for their DVIator adapter to allow Macs with DVI port video cards to use Apple 15 inch and 22 inch ADC LCD displays. (A competitors model previously announced costs about twice as much.)
"
DVIator combines DVI video, USB and external power to drive Apple's ADC 15"
and 22" displays without any loss in quality or functionality. It is
compatible with all G4 Power Macs with built-in DVI video and older Macs
that have a compatible DVI video card installed. Dr. Bott's internal
testing included Beige Macs all the way down to the 7200. =
Available: May 2001
Retail Price: $149.95" |

IBM's New PowerPC Strategy Roadmap
"
www.chips.ibm.com/products/powerpc/newsletter/apr2001/lead.html.
I am really impressed that things like PCI-X, DDR RAM, and .13u
processtechnology will be here real soon now, according to the papers.
And the 1GHz+, and multicore, opens a nice future. RapidIO is something Motorola also does focus on. I wonder if the "integrated SIMD-engine" is
AltiVec?
sincerely
Orjan L.
Sweden"
I think Motorola owns the rights to Altivec as I remember, so IBM may be referring to it or their own SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) design. Some of the future IBM processors may be targeted for their servers however.

Comments on under $1000 17 and 18 inch LCD Displays:
A reader replied to the post in yesterday's news about a local (Richmond VA) Costco selling the Princeton 17" LCD monitor (LCD17 model I believe) for $829.99.
"
I have the Princeton 17in flat panel display which Costco carries. I
also have the 18.1in unbranded flat panel from MacMall. In my opinion
the 18.1 inch is well worth the small difference ($899 for the 18.1) in price.
I was never able to get the Princeton display to appear crisp with my G4
450 although I was able to get a decent appearance with a PC. The
MacMall display was crisp and clear out of the box and the larger size
makes a noticeable difference.
Bill F.
"
The $899 was after a $100 mail-in rebate he later said. C/net has a recent review of two 17" LCDs from Viewsonic and Sceptre but the preferred Viewsonic was over $1000.
Other readers sent word that the KDS 17" LCD displays are available for under $800 at some outlets. One reader also sent a note the SGI 1600SW 17" LCD is now $995, however it has a digital interface that requires the Formac Proformance 3 w/interface module or their expensive (appx. $500) Multilink adapter to use with VGA or DVI graphics cards. (The 1600SW doesn't use the DVI digital LCD standard, but an earlier version that isn't pin compatible.) SGI offers bundles with either the Proformance 3 card or the Multilink adapter. The Apple (OEM) graphics card section listed in their superwide-savvy page all require the MultiLink adapter. (The Proformance3 w/DFP module does not require the MultiLink.)

Quicktime 5 Pro Tip for Owners of QT 3/4 Keys:
"
For all the distressed people who bought a quicktime pro key for 3/4,
here is a solution to the problem. Make sure that your copy of Quicktime
5 preview 3 has a pro key (a 3/4 key works) attached to it. Copy the
Quicktime player for preview 3 to somewhere else. Download the full
installer for Quicktime5.0.1 and install. Restart. Then swap out the
quicktime 5.0.1 player for
the QT5 preview 3. Presto! Its the Pro version of QT5.0.1 with no
experation date. Enjoy
Gary"
As noted in an Apple TIL, QT Pro keys bought before 10/20/2000 are not usable as QT 5 Pro keys. I upgraded to 5.01 without saving my QT 5 preview 3 player, but had a copy of my QT Pro 4 player and it seems to have the Pro features still enabled under 5.01 (at least in the player).
