| Westlake Comments on Unreal Tournament Carbon Port: |
| A forum post noted that there Mark Adams of Westlake Interactive was working on Carbonizing Unreal Tournament in his spare time. I wrote Mark to ask for more info and he replied:
"
I've been attempting to, I'm not sure why - its kind of crazy. But I'm
still plugging away at it.
(he later wrote)
... no end result is definite- since I'm just doing it for 'fun' at this point I don't when/if it will get finished. Right now I'm kind of stuck- the latest Metrowerks won't compile UT at all, no matter what settings I change, so I can't debug under OS X.

| Reader Report on iTunes/Discburner Hack for Toshiba DVD/CDRW Combo Drive: |
One of the entries in the Drive Compatibility Database here over the weekend included this report from a Toshiba IDE Combo DVD/CDRW drive owner that noted how he got the drive to work with iTunes/Disc Burner.
"Toshiba SR-1002 (4x/4x/24x)
Beige G3 running OS 9.1
Comments:
"The drive boots fine in MacOS 9.1, but won't boot in MacOS X (it's still
useable after installation, but I had to switch back to the original CD-ROM drive to install the OS.)
I got iTunes 1.1 and Disc Burner 1.0.1 to work by hacking the "ToshibaCDR" file in "System:Extensions:Authoring Support Files". I used BBEdit Lite
to change "TOSHIBANONE" to "TOSHIBADVD-" to match the start of the drive's id string. I had to manually install Disc Burner using TomeViewer.
Andrew O'Dea"
I don't have one of these drives to test, but welcome other owner reports on how this tip works. (Not all mods like this work reliably with unsupported drives.)

| Burning Multiple CDs Simultaneously with Toast 5: |
"Hello Mike,
You may have already known this, but I discovered today, that its possible
to burn more than one CD at once using Toast. By duplicating the
application, and selecting the CDR/W drive in "Recorder Info" in the
Recorder menu. I had a AOPEN 12x10x32 CRW1232 (Internal IDE @12x), and a
Ricoh 6x4x24 MP7060S (External SCSI @6X) both burning CDs at once, both came
out fine, I even inserted another CD into the AOPEN 12X and burnt the while
the RICOH drive was still burning in the back. I burnt 7 discs this way,
each one perfect. The computer however became a bit less responsive
(sluggish) than when I only have one session burning, but I was still able
to do things in the background like Hotline, and Internet Explorer 5. I left
my external 16x10x40 LACIE Fire-wire (also has USB) burner at work on
Friday. But on Monday, I am going to bring it home and try 3 CDs at once!!
The RICOH and the AOPEN do not have burn-proof technology, but the LACIE
drive does.
My setup is:
G4 400Mhz (o/c 350), 512MB RAM, Adaptec 2906 SCSI Card
Mac OS 9.1 with al current updates.
Roxio Toast 5.0.1 (64MB cache set in prefs)

| Reader Comments on Daytek's Streamer and Macs (Updated with Tip): |
| A reader replied to the original post here on lack of Mac support for Daytek's streamer. See the details page for the original post and the reply with a tip on getting Streamer to work. |
"Hi:
I called Datek online today because the newest stock streamer that they have will not work on any of my 3 Mac's using OS 9.1 and I.E.
Here is the result of my inquiry:
Thank you for choosing Datek Online.
We recently implemented several enhancements to our Streamer java
applet. These enhancements include improvements in functionality and
display, as well as a change to the login process to increase security
for our customers.
Unfortunately, current software available for the Macintosh operating
system does not support many of the advanced security features that are now part of Streamer. We recognize that many Datek Online customers use Mac OS computers and apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause.
For the time being, Datek Online is unable to support Streamer on the Macintosh operating system. Until Macintosh can develop software up to par with us, streamer will not be available.
If you have any questions, e-mail us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at
support@datek.com or call Customer Support, weekdays 8 AM - midnight and weekends 9 AM - 7 PM Eastern Standard Time at 1-800-U2DATEK. Please call 1-201-761-7500 if you are calling from outside of the United States. You can also view the status of any cases regarding your
account by choosing the @nswerbox link under the Account Services
pull-down menu.

A reader replied to this post:
"
hi,
apple already has the software to handle Datek's java ticker: Mac OS Runtime
For Java
your writer [reader above-Mike] just has to get the page source for the java ticker using IE,
snip out the irrelevant parts and save it as FileType: TEXT FileCreator:
WARZ and you can double click on the resulting file to launch MRJ.
Netscape Navigator seems to have issues with the streamer. Using MRJ from
inside IE did not work the last time I tried it. Got this from a thread at
Raging Bull a year or two ago
here's a snippet from mine:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<!-- load the streamer applet -->
<APPLET Codebase = "http://streamerdata.datek.com/" code="StreamerApplet"
archive="sc1-149.jar" height=0 width=0>
(snipped out)
</APPLET>
</html>
mind you I only use the qoute part, I've never used it to place an order or
manage a Datek account
Kevin
"
Apple updated MRJ a month or so ago to address a security issue. I asked the reader that sent the original post what version of MRJ he was running but have not received a reply yet. |

| Reader Feedback on CarbonLib 1.3.1: |
| (Note: On 5/15/2001, Apple posted a TIL regarding Conflict Between CarbonLib 1.3.1 and AppleScript .) Friday's news had a problem report from a reader that installed CarbonLib 1.3.1 regarding dragging files in OutLook Express 5 (not sure if he had 5.02 or not). I've received other feedback on CarbonLib 1.3.1 over the weekend, some noting problems, others not.
|
"
Mike,
Just as a general warning on CarbonLib 1.3.1, I thought I'd share my
two experiences with you.
G4 733Mhz running the OS that came with the 'puter and 9500/350 (G3
upgraded) running OS 9.1 retail release. After install using the
software update control panel, everything seemed OK that is until I
tried to move a file. Nothing would move! No file located anywhere
would move to a new location. This happened on both 'puters.
Revert back to 1.2.5, everything back to normal....
Cheers!
Bart
(he later wrote)
Yes, with both machines! 733Mhz with OS that came with the 'puter, and
9600/350 (G3 upgrded) running the OS 9.1 retail CD.
No problems related the the Open Transport update that Apple released
today (via software update control panel), the experiences with The
CarbonLib update were before I ran the Open Transport update.
"
"
Mike,
No problems with CarbonLib 1.3.1 and Outlook Express for me. I'm running a
9500 with XLR8 Carrier G3/500 and 9.1. Outlook Express is version 5.02
(2022).
I can move messages around between my many folders and even between IMAP
accounts.
So far, no problems with CarbonLib 1.3.1 at all.
Bruce
"
"
Lot's of negative comments on this on VersionTracker.
Jim
"
The reader's problem post from Friday's news follows.
"Mike
I updated to the latest version of carbon lib on my Mac 9600 running OS 9.1 and I found one unusual problem. After restarting I went to check my mail with Outlook Express 5.0 and I found that I could not move messages around from one folder to another. I went back to version 1.2.5 of carbon lib and restarted the computer. Bingo the problem disappeared.
Regards
Bob W."

A reader sent a note that ComputerGeeks has used, plain box Mac Voodoo5 cards for $69.00 with a 90 day warranty. I reviewed the Voodoo5 last summer here on the video articles page. Remember there' s no DVD player support, no driver updates, etc. since 3dfx is now RIP. (Prices and Availability were valid on 5/14/2001, but these are limited quantity and may sell out at any time.)

| OpenTransport 2.7.6 Available: |
For those that missed the weekend update to the Software Updates page, Apple's OpenTransport v2.7.6 is available via the OS 9 Software Updates Control Panel or via this direct download link. (Thanks to Steve for the link URL.). It's for OS 9.1 only according to the readme file which notes:
"OT 2.7.6 Update resolves a minor issue that prevented some applications from behaving as expected. It is recommended for all customers, especially in education.
OT 2.7.6 Update is for Mac OS 9.1 only. It will not install on earlier versions.

The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 24 new entries added this morning. The database has reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters).
