More Emails on Backordered Mac GeForce4 Ti Cards Shipping Now
[Update: I've posted a first look/tests of the Mac GeForce4 Titatinum graphics card.]
Last week I posted a reader's comments that he had gotten an email from his dealer (Switzerland) that his GeForce4 Ti card was to ship soon. Today he wrote that he got another email with more definite info, and two other readers in the USA wrote today to say they had gotten emails that their GF4 Titanium card had shipped.
All these emails are related to early orders of G4 towers with the GF4 Ti card option. So far I have not seen the card available separately yet at the Apple Store (it was to sell for $399 per the first press release earlier this year.) However it is available as a BTO option again on G4 towers. As supplies increase it should be offered separately.

Updated iPhoto 1.1.1 Toast Export Plugin
(from the email press release)
" What does the iPhoto Toast Export Plugin do?
The Toast Export Plugin allows you to burn directly from iPhoto using Roxio Toast Titanium. Send discs to your friends or to a local photo processor for prints. Share photos, albums, film rolls or your entire photo library on CDs or DVDs.

    Requirements
Apple iPhoto 1.1.1 software, Roxio Toast Titanium 5.1 or later, Mac OS X 10.1.2 or later. This version of the Toast Export Plugin will not work with earlier versions of iPhoto .

    Installation
Uninstall any previous version of the Toast Export Plugin: Locate the iPhoto application, highlight its icon, and select Get Information from the File menu. Select the Plugins pane from the popup menu. Select the "ToastExport.iPhotoExporter" plugin and click the Remove... button.

Download the Toast Export Plugin. Mount the disc image. Locate the iPhoto 1.1.1 application, highlight its icon, and select Get Information from the File menu. Select the Plugins pane from the popup menu. Click the Add button, and select the "ToastExport.iPhotoExporter" folder on the mounted disc image. The Plugins window might not update immediately - close and reopen the Get Information window if necessary. Launch iPhoto 1.1.1.

How do you burn a disc?
It's easy! Select what you'd like to burn. You can pick individual pictures, albums, rolls, or even your entire library to burn. Click the Share button in iPhoto, then the Export button. Choose the Toast tab. Enter the name you'd like to give your disc, then click Export. Toast Titanium will launch and ask you to insert a blank disc. You're ready to burn.

    Download
Download iPhoto 1.1.1 Toast Export Plugin . (Compatible with iPhoto 1.1.1 only)

    FAQ

Q: How much does the Toast Export Plugin cost?
A: It's free. That means it's also unsupported.

Q: What format does Toast use to burn the disc?
A: Toast will use whichever format was last selected in its "Data" pane. For widest compatibility, set Toast to use "Mac OS Extended and PC (Hybrid) CD" before exporting.

    Q: How do I burn a DVD?
A: Set Toast to use "Mac OS Extended and PC (Hybrid) CD" as above, then insert a blank DVD disc when Toast asks for media. The resulting disc is a DVD-ROM that's readable in computers (but not in DVD-Video players.)

    Known Issues
If you select a single photo, exporting to Toast doesn't work.

    Feedback
Send your comments to toastexport@elgato.com. We'll read all messages, but we don't guarantee that we'll be able to answer them all. Happy Burning! "

Photoshop 7 Upgrade for less than $90 after Mail-In Rebate
Several readers replied to my earlier news item on in-store $99.99 (no mail-in rebate delays/hassles) Pshop 7.0 upgrade to note that Amazon.com now has a $50 mail-in rebate on the upgrade for a net price of under $90.

" just a note about your story...- i beat that price! i contacted amazon.com this weekend and they're honoring their $50 rebate coupon for the windoze version of PS7's upgrade on the mac version - i have the reply to prove it. with no charge on ground delivery - which should take a few days to get here, the final price of my upgrade is $79.99! the coupon is good for purchases until 5/26. get it while it's hot!
    chris "

[Another reader noted a different net cost]

    Mike:
You may have heard of this already from other readers, but Amazon currently has the Mac upgrade to v7 for $136.99 minus a $50 rebate, with free shipping and no tax, for a total price of $86.99 :)
    Dan F.

One reader wrote to say he had ordered PShop 7.0 upgrade from Amazon previously when they listed the rebate at $20 and even though the product had not arrived yet they refused to honor the $50 rebate (current offer):

" they had originally posted a $20 rebate on the site..
so I jumped in, took the bait. No problem, until I go back to amazon.com, check their site for order status a few days later and notice that the rebate is now *$50*

arrrgh.. several emails later, they will not offer me the newer rebate promotion, although I had not received the products yet.

mind you, there was nothing that kept me from returning the above, then re-ordering at the new price.

I kindly asked them to delete my amazon accout, that I wouldn't be doing business with them in the future due to this practice.

I suggested that brick and mortar shops do make it such a practive to proactively honor price drops withing 10-30days of purchase.
    Tim S. "

As I told some other readers - I normally hate mail-in rebates (I'm still waiting for my $50 rebate on the SBlive and $30 rebate on the Seimens Speedstream.) Some rebates take several months to get back and some I have sent were "lost" in transit apparently.
Personally I'd as soon buy it for $99.99 straight out as deal with the mail-in rebates for $20 or so net difference, but $30+ more out of pocket initially. (In my state you have to pay a "consumer use" tax equal to the state sales tax for items ordered via mail that did not have sales tax charged.)

Article on IBM's Future/Faster PowerPC G3s with Power-Saving Features
Newsfactor has a story today titled IBM Goes Own Way with PowerPC with comments on the PowerPC 405LP and its power-saving features. [One reader said the 405 is an embedded applications CPU, not for general use like a laptop.] The article says IBM is aiming for multi-core and 2Ghz CPUs that might find their way into future Apple portables like the iBook. They noted up to 10x reduction in power use by shutting off portions of the chip and that features like integrated voice recognition and encryption were also planned.

Warning to those Considering Flashing a PC Radeon 8500 128MB Card:
For those considering flashing a PC Radeon 8500 128MB (non-LE) card for Mac use - I and two other readers had severe problems with the 128MB (non-LE) card in OS 9 and OS X. (No 3d application or game ran at all in OS 9.2 for me with the card and in OS X the display had a severe purple tint that was not fixable. Although in OS X, 3D games and apps did run, and 3d windows didn't have the color tint, nor games.) -I'd not suggest to anyone that they try a 128MB PC card in a Mac after my experience and two other readers who had even worse problems than I saw. See the lower posts in this thread for the complete details.

Photoshop 7.0 Upgrade for $99.99
This weekend's CompUSA web page in-store specials listed $80 off their normally $179.99 priced Adobe Photoshop 7.0 upgrade (Mac or PC version). I thought the list price on the upgrade was $149.xx (I bought it for $129.xx online at a major mac retailer) but regardless, $99.99 is the lowest I've ever seen to date. [Update - see the later news item above about Amazon's $50 rebate if you don't mind paying $130+ and then waiting/mailing in a $50 rebate.]
Here's a clip from their website this weekend. (Not sure when the special expires.)

Reader Reports on 20-24x CDRW Drives with Retrospect Support
Last Friday I asked any readers using Retrospect for OS X to post a report in the drive database. Today's updates to the database had 2 new reports of compatible drives:

    IDE Sony CRX175A1 24x10x40x
    Beige G3 running OS X
    Comments:
"You asked for reports on high speed CD/RWs working with Retrospect. Well, this Sony drive at 24/10/40 works great, unlike my old slower Ricoh drive. It also works from Toast, the Finder, and iTunes (though the last required the hacked support file from your FAQ page.)
    I'm running 10.1.4.
    Dan C. "

(Reader FYI - the CDROM/CDR section of the FAQ has the previously posted itunes support mod - although there may be several revs of this Sony drive model)

    Firewire Yamaha CRW3200FXZ 24x10x40
    G4/AGP running OS X
    Comments:
" Mac OS 10.1.4 and Retrospect 5.0.203 supports this top quality FireWire drive. Toast 5.1.3 Titanium works it just fine. It came with NeroMax. Nice silver case goes well with Graphite G4 or Quicksilver G4.
    Bradley D. "

I also suggested readers check Dantz's website for the latest Retrospect CDRW drive compatability information.
(Remember that retail boxed drives from some companies that don't actually make the drive mechanism can have different drive models (brand/mechanisms) inside the box or Firewire case from one batch to the next - making it hard to recommend specific retail boxed drive brands except those from actual drive mfrs like Yamaha or Plextor, etc..)

Info on Matrox's New Graphics Card Expected to be Announced the 14th
At first it was thought to be an April Fool's joke, but Matrox does hint an a new announcement on May 14th at their main graphics card website and there's been some web pages posted on demos of the card to some user groups. The specs sound impressive (multiple monitor support, 80 million transistors, up to 350 MHz core/memory clock rate, 256-bit DDR memory bus , appx. 20 GB/sec local memory bandwidth, up to 256 MB memory, 4 pipelines w/4 texture units each ).
A reader in the forums linked to this Digit-Life page on the Matrox Parhelia-512 (in english) with more details and there's also a chinese page with some photos of a demo. (I don't know if they plan a Mac version, but it will be interesting to see the official press release tomorrow from Matrox.)

MacAmp Lite for OS X
Although not sure what the interest is on a shareware app like this since iTunes from Apple is free - here's a copy of the email press release:

    "MacAmp Lite X 1.0.0 - Criminally Cool!
Renton, Wa - Subband Software has released MacAmp Lite X v1.0.0 (MaltX), only for OS X! This eagerly anticipated application is a complete rewrite of the original, with many updated features. The new MacAmp Lite uses far less CPU than other audio apps, and saves screen space. From MacAmp Lite's compact player window, which floats above other applications, users are able to maintain complete control using the standard controls, as well as a full playlist menu.
    View a screenshot at
    http://www.macamplite.com/index_img/player.jpg

MaltX is still compatible with the 200+ skins for the original MALT, and creating new skins is as easy as 1-2-3: 1) Create images 2) Place images in Malt Mixer (http://www.macamplite.com/addons/), Subband's free Skin creator 3) Enjoy!.
MacAmp Lite is also compatible with Subband's new Plugins Power Pack (http://www.macamplite.com/ppp.php), which comes as part of the MaltX trial. The Plugins Power Pack enables features for the power user, including Broadcasting to SHOUTCast/IceCast servers, several different encoding plugins, and much more. The Pack will also be compatible with future Subband audio applications, including the forthcoming MacAmp for OS X.
Key Features of MacAmp Lite X:
    - Incredible playback of MP3 audio, as well streams, CDs, and more
    - Hundreds of skins to choose from
    - Compact but powerful floating player window
    - Playlist Menu for complete control from anywhere
    - Low CPU usage, perfect for background audio
    - Written from the ground up in pure Cocoa

MacAmp Lite is available, as shareware, for free download from http://www.macamplite.com. It features a full 2 week demonstration period, after which certain features will be disabled. Registration is only $12 for MacAmp Lite, and an additional $10 for the Plugins Power Pack."

Newer Technology is Back? (Has New Owners)
Digging through my email backlog I found an mail from last week where a reader (thanks Redmac) noted that Newer Tech's webpage is noting they "are back". Here's a clip from the page as it stands today:

    "We're baaaack!
    Newer Technology lives again!
    Newer Technology has new owners.

Watch for more information here in the upcoming weeks. We'll have the downloads and Tech Support pages back online as well as new product information.

For now, you can contact Newer Technology by sending email to: info@newertech.com"

I wrote them to ask what's the story - i.e. are they going to be making upgrades again. (I heard several engineers were hired by sonnet last year and one report that the rights to products had been bought but not sure that is true.)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
