OS X Beta Driver for Miro DC30plus Capture Card
(from a reader email)

" There's a (OS X) driver available now for the (discontinued) MiroMotion DC 30 video capture card. After Miro was bought by Pinnacle, support for this card was dropped (like any other hardware except CineWave). An italian programmer came up with a (freeware?) driver for OSX. This still is a really nice card using MJPEG hardware compression and if I understand any other codec supported by QT (think of uncompressed video using SheerVideo Pro :o) .Amazing!
http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/dc30xact.html.
Oliver "

I never owned one of these (old now) cards, but posting as a FYI for anyone that does. The linked page notes a G4 Mac is recommended, 10.2.x is required and lists the miroMotion DC30plus/miroVideo DC30plus cards, with a note that it may not work with all variations of the Miro DC30 card.

Some new iPod owners Report Audio Clicks/Pops before Song is Played
When I saw the first report of audio "pops" before playing a song on the new iPods (from one reader) I thought it might be a rare problem - but apparently some others have also noted this problem, although two readers with new iPod 15GB didn't mention it. I don't own a new iPod to check for this and it may be only audible at high volume settings - not sure. Here's the first report on it:

"(iPod 30GB owner comments)
...My only gripe with it is that when it starts playing back a song there is a annoying pop. This happens with apple's earbuds, and also when it is connected to my reciever. This is annoying and I could do without it considering that it cost 500bucks. Anybody else experiencing this...or could advise me on how to get rid of the pops. Thanks
georgemp "

Although not every new iPod owner has reported this, George later noted that Apple's forums have a thread on the issue:

Hope apple can fix this soon via a firmware upgrade. It is super annoying to hear the pops through my speakers at high volumes.
georgemp
(he later commented on another noise)
when connected to the dock, a constant whine is output through the speakers. i don't hear it when it isn't connected to the dock ... after a bit of testing, it seems that the whining sound is present only when the line out on the dock is used. Otherwise, it works fine, except for the pop at the beginning of every song. "

(Several other iPod owners replied to this posting saying they also hear the clicks.)

Apple kbase doc on Deauthorizing Computer/iTunes4 (HD reformat alone doesn't)
Apple has a kbase doc titled iTunes 4: About Authorization and Deauthorization that notes a hard drive reformat does not deauthorize the computer, you have to use iTunes 4's "Advanced > Deauthorize Computer" option. (A FYI for those looking to sell your Mac or replacing a hard drive that might be given away to others.)

Recording Support in new iPods?
Two readers sent a link to an ipoding.com story about recording support in the new iPods. There's a how-to on recording with the latest iPod models there (by entering diagnostic mode).
(Update: ipoding.com link results in forbidden error here (even base URL) as of Noon Eastern Time - Alternate link with info is iPodlounge.)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
