| Sonnet announces Dual G4 CPU Upgrades up to 1.3GHz |
Sonnet has a press release today announcing their new Dual G4 CPU upgrades for Sawtooth to Quicksilver G4/AGP towers. (Some early Sawtooth models have a Uni-N rev 3 chipset which isn't compatible with any dual CPU upgrades as mentioned previously, see this Sonnet page for how to check the Uni-N revision using Apple System Profiler.) The press release notes the Encore/ST G4 Duet 1.3 GHz will ship in June 2004 at $699.95 MSRP. (Lower than PL's Dual G4/7457 CPU Upgrade's current pricing). The PR also notes lower pricing on some of their existing single G4/AGP tower CPU Upgrades. Sponsor OWC wrote they're taking pre-orders on the new Dual G4 Sonnet upgrades at a few dollars under list:
"
FWIW - we are accepting orders on this new product. Really looking forward to testing it and finding out what processor it has too. I assume a 7455 - but the description lists 745X....
Best Regards,
Lawrence R. O'Connor
Other World Computing
"
I wrote Sonnet's PR contact to ask if the dual CPU upgrades used 7455 or 7457 CPUs. (The 7457 has 512KB L2 vs 256KB for the 7455, but the 7457 required a system firmware update to work with OS 9.) Larry (OWC) later wrote "We have confirmed it is a 7455 - they couldn't tell us a or b... But I would be quite surprised if it wasn't the 'b' rev." (A later mail from their Sonnet contact noted 7455Bs.)
Joy of Sonnet also wrote back regarding the question on CPU used:
"
Hello Mike:
At this time, we're using 7455s, so the upgrades are pretty much
plug-and-play, unless the user needs a firmware update.
Thanks.

The firmware update she's referring to is just the Apple system firmware for your particular mac model - i.e. make sure your Tower has the last firmware update from Apple. (The 7457s were designed to run cooler (lower voltage) than the 7455's, but the chips cost more than 7455s and for OS 9 users, needed the firmware patch.)
When these are shipping if any readers buy one - post a report in the database here. (Run some before/after tests if you can - see examples in my reviews of G4 CPU upgrades here. Thanks.)

| Comments on Roku HD1000 Digital Media Player and HDTV |
| (from a reader mail this weekend)
"
Mike, The Neuston Corp seems a bit ambigous whether their Virtuoso MC-500 supports HDTV output. (the MC-500 is a digital media player similar to EyeHome with some additional features) They mention MPEG2 decoding, but nothing about the supported
resolutions thru the TV outputs.
But Roku is very unambiguous that their HD1000 player ($299) does support HDTV output:
http://www.rokulabs.com/products/hd1000/index.php
They seem to be underemphasizing that a recent update allows this player to play HD video as well as the original slide shows. I think these guys deserve a lot more attention. The player is Linux-based and there is a lot of open-source activity on enhancing its capabilities, with Roku Labs enthusiastic support.
Thanks! - Paul
"
If any reader tries one of these with a Mac - let me know. (I doubt it supports protected AAC ITMS files although the specs lists AAC (unprotected I assume) - but the FAQ includes a comment about future updates supporting AAC and WMA. Maybe that FAQ info is not up-to-date.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
