    Intego PR/Alert on Malicious Applescript
Here we go again (but this time they say it's not just a proof-of-concept), Intego sent an email about their Security Alert: AS.MW2004.Trojan, that says one of their readers downloaded and ran an Applescript with what looked like an MS Office-like installer icon from the Gnutella peer-to-peer network - which erased all the user's (home directory) files. Of course they also have an update for their AV software for this "trojan". (I don't own their software and I just avoid running unknown apps or scripts...)

Thread on flashing NEC 2500A with NEC 2510 Dual layer burner firmware
    (from a reader mail today)

"Just a short post to let you know that on www.rpc1.org there has been a post for a third party firmware that apparently takes the NEC 2500a (used in Lacie external DVD+-R drives) (some of them - some Lacie 8x drives also use the DVR-107D which has native support in 10.3.3. NEC 2500a's are also in some Pacific Digital retail boxes as mentioned in past drive db reports-Mike) to the upcoming NEC 2510a a dual layer DVD+R9 (9GB) burner. Initially it was thought the firmware was a hoax, but it has been tested by a couple of moderators on the site who definitely know what they are doing. On post describes actually testing it using DL media with screenshots of results. It looks like there is more work to come, but this is very interesting for people who have this burner as they may be able to make the transition to DL burning without having to fork out for a new DVD writer.
    See http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=25531
    (thread is several pages long)
    Thanks, Jag
    (he later wrote)
I am going to try it tonight, to see if I can flash it via USB and virtual pc in the Lacie case. (usually works if the flasher supports ext. drives, no FW drive support in VPC so USB is used) Will keep you up to date on what happens. I can test it on a PC laptop (via USB) to if Nero or DVDinfo shows that it is DL capable ( the latest software will show up it's capabilities). "

About a year or so ago there was a story on the web that Pioneer demoed a flashed (for dual layer support) drive at some show/expo. (I think the story claimed it was a DR-106D model if I remember correctly, since I believe that was before they released the 107D model, but I could be wrong).
Yesterday's news had a note about Roxio's press release that Toast 6 would be updated to support dual-layer burning. The PR mentioned a June release for the update.

MDD G4 Owner reports on using CHUD 3.5.1 (nap mode) for Lowering CPU temps
Yesterday's news page had a note about the CHUD Tools 3.5.1 update (available at Apple FTP Developer Tools directory and MU) and I asked if any MDD G4 tower owners had used it (the Hardware prefs pane to enable Nap mode for lower CPU temperatures). Earlier CHUD versions (3.0.x) were reported here last December to have caused problems with those systems when NAP mode was enabled. (One reader had disk corruption after a freeze/crash.)
Several MDD owners replied to the request for feedback with reports on using Nap mode in CHUD 3.5.x. (It's off by default on those systems - and will be off again after a restart of the OS.) Although no horror stories so far like reported last year with 3.0.x (but most still noted freezes with 3.5.1, some more frequent than others), I'd still recommend having a backup (Carbon Copy Cloner for instance) if possible before enabling Nap mode. (noted drive disappeared after 10.2 update)
(Reader FYI - Illustrated guide to adding a 2nd HD here in B&W G3 rev2 and G4 towers up to the QuickSilver models.
IDE articles page RAID section has an illustrated guide for adding 2 more drives in the side bays.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
