Mac Unreal Tournament 2004 v3204 Update
I missed it this weeked - but 3DGamers.com's UT2004 page lists a May 22nd dated Mac UT2004 v3204 updater (several mirrors there) and links to a page with notes on the changes:

"UT2004 for MacOS X patch 3204
This patch will apply cleanly to either a fresh install of UT2004/mac (3186), or an installation with the interim patch (3186.1). This patch needs an installation of the retail game; it will not work with the demo...although we'll be updating that soon, too.

Please note that this patch hasn't gone through MacSoft QA (or really much of any QA, to be honest), but in the interest of time, I'm putting this out there now. If that makes you nervous, you should wait for an official announcement from MacSoft.

To install: Click a download link in Safari. It'll download and churn along for a while. Double-click the "UT2004 MacOS X 3204 patch" icon that'll eventually show up. If everything goes smoothly, it'll tell you that you're ready to play.
--icculus. (programmer)"

Macsoft's UT2004 support page doesn't have version 3204 listed yet.
(If you missed Friday's news page, there's a recent release of a Community Bonus pack 2 with extra maps and 4 new characters.)

OS X firmware updater for Pioneer Superdrives (DVR-107/106/105/104)
Several readers sent a note there's now a Mac OS X compatible flash utility for updating Pioneer superdrives (aka DVR-107, 106, 105 and 104) available at http://www.macetvideo.com/flashpioneerosx/flashpioneerosx.html. (Page is in French but download links at the bottom of the page.) Pioneer's only Mac OS compatible flash utilities to date were for the DVR-103, 104 and 105 drives and required booting to OS 9 to run. (One other option noted here in the past was using VirtualPC with a USB cased drive to run the Windows/PC flasher.)
Thanks to Bernard, Cayetano, Jamie, Laurent and Thomas for sending notes on the OS X flasher. Some mails included links to various forum threads on using the updater also such has http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=222601 (has notes on using flasher w/official Pioneer firmware) and http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=25930.
Note: For unlucky owners of DVR-107D drives with the unsupported "DVD RW" ID (instead of the standard "DVD-RW" ID), the OS X flasher's 1.13 update includes a kernel that will correct that.

ChangeShortName v1.0 Released
(from the author's email/PR)

" ChangeShortName is a script and helper application that do the dirty work involved in changing the short name of a user's account in Mac OS X (versions 10.3.x and 10.2.x). It can also repair some problems that occur when a user has attempted to change their short username manually and done so incorrectly. For safety, it even backs up the NetInfo database beforehand. Changing your short username is a serious procedure, but ChangeShortName makes doing so easier and safer.
ChangeShortName is "donationware," and can be downloaded from http://www.macosxpowertools.com/. Be sure to read the included documentation before using it. "

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 6 new reports this morning (entries from Friday-Sunday, entries today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 9,382. Here's a summary of the reports added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Powerlogix G3/1GHz in (Yikes) G4 no AGP (rated 9)
(includes comparison tests of G4/500 ZIF vs G3/1GHz ZIF)
  • PowerLogix Dual G4/1.33GHz in G4/AGP (rated 1)
  • Sonnet G4/1GHz in B&W G3 (rated 1)
(can't install sonnet patch due to prev. B&W G3 firmware patched by XLR8 utility. PL patcher tip in the past here to fix that - but PL has removed that download from their site now apparently - past page link no longer found.)
  • Sonnet G4/1GHz in (sawtooth) G4/AGP (no rating given, upgrade wouldn't boot)
  • Sonnet G3/400 in PowerCenter Pro (rated 9)
  • Other Brand (Fastmac) G4/1.4GHz in G4/AGP (rated 10)

(My reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades w/apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked on the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). For detailed reviews with performance tests and install tips, see the CPU Upgrades page.)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:

(no native burn support, using Lacie profile linked here on the Patchburn II for Panther page)
  • IDE LG GSA-4081B in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn II for Panther burn support)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D in Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.3)

    Hard Drives:
  • Firewire (cased) Hitachi Deskstar 180GB used w/iMac G4 (OS X)
(noted his ICE FW/USB case didn't have big drive support, so limited to 128GB)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
