| G5 owner report on problems w/OEM LG drive after recent Firmware Update |
| (from a reader mail today)
"
I hope some of your readers have a solution for this
type of the problem.
I updated my dual 1.8 G5's (June 2004) SuperDrive (LG)
with Apple's latest SuperDrive Firmware Update. (update mentioned in last Wed and Thursday's news pages) After
the update, the SuperDrive is completely dead. During
the udpate, the tray was opened by the update. After
the successful update, I shut down the machine then
rebooted, but the tray was never closed. I pushed the
tray, it did not want to close either. I had to push all the way to
close it. (I'd not have forced it; just wait until the system boots and then use the Eject key to close the tray, but he later said it's completely unresponsive now-Mike)
I opened the System Profiler, and I was
shocked to find out the update changed the SuperDrive
to "HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-4080B", it is supposed to be
"HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B". (Thursday's news page listed the contents of the updater which listed both drive models.-Mike) Mac OS X (I am using
10.3.9 with the latest Security Update) does not
recognize the drive in any software (Apple nor 3rd
party), tried PatchBurn with no help. I pressed the
Eject button on the keyboard, but the drive does not
respond at all.
I tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the NVRAM in
OpenFirmware, unpluging/repluging the drive and
reboot, but nothing helped.
I searched Apple's Discussion forum and found there
are a few people with the exact same problem, but none of
them have found any solutions yet.
The messy profile of the SuperDrive now is:
ATA-6 Bus:
Vendor ID: 0x106b
Device ID: 0x0043
Revision ID: 0x0000
HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-4080B:
Model: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-4080B
Revision: COR1
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-ROM
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Several readers updated their drive last week OK
but from the ASP report it looks like the firmware either failed to
fully flash or is corrupted. (I don't think cached system info on the previous drive model number would cause this.)
I don't know any fix for this other than trying to find a PC utility to force flash the drive again using a PC
(that's been done with some Pioneer drives that had
flash updates fail). I'd personally call Apple about this
and request a replacement. (Or see if they know any way to
reflash the drive correctly.)
If anyone knows of a fix/force reflash for this drive, let me know.
(Today has been a total disaster - even the power won't stay on here. I'm not going to be able to stay online for long unless they get that fixed. Sorry)

| Report on Problems with Photoshop CS2 and Tiger Clean/Case-Sensitive Install |
| (from a reader mail today)
"
wanted to report, that Adobe CS 2.0 ist not compatible with an HFS+
Journaled CaseSensitve formatted drive, because they screwed up some links to their frameworks an so the aliases won't work and the app is calling to non existion frameworks. Found that out by starting the program (Photoshop) via the terminal, and got the reports of non
findable frameworkimages.
Tried to fix this manually by renaming and fixing all the aliases,
but then the registration wasn't accepted anymore. Moving the
application to my old panther drive with HFS+ journaled
NonCaseSensitve enabled the application and all went smoothly.
So i got to warn all those clean installers, like me, that tried the
CaseSensitive Option for the disk, it makes your day a lot less
friendly :-(
Greetings, michael
"
Anyone else see this? (I don't own PShop CS2 (and did a dirty/upgrade install of Tiger - PShop CS and 7.01 run ok but not used them for anything yet.)

The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,652 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
Combo DVD-CDR Drives:
- IDE LG GCC-4521B (52X32X52X, 16X DVD-ROM) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.4)

DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- Firewire (cased) TDK DVDRW 880N used w/iMac slot-loading (OS X 10.3)
(Using burn support profile from the FAQ here, although Patchburn 3 should also work for Panther iApps burn support.)
- IDE LG GSA-4082B in eMac (OS X 10.3)
(reported as unsupported by ASP. Should use Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support)
- IDE Pioneer DVR-109 in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 or Panther iApps burn support. Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
