| Report on ATI 8500 card/DVD Player problems w/Tiger |
| (From a reader mail - I don't have Tiger running with an 8500 card to check this)
"
Would you please run a feedback request for Radeon 8500 owners trying to use Tiger's DVD Player. I have read about 5 owners of such cards for whom it is impossible to use Apple' DVD Player. (I know one owner personally.) The picture is heavily pixelated and the sound is scratchy. Using an alternate player help.
The problem could be in the driver or the firmware of the card. I
have mentioned the problem to Bruno at ATI. The problem occurs with 10.4.0 and 10.4.1.
Thanks, Ronald L.
"
Another mail from yesterday noted the same thing (missed it then as it had a subject line of "advertising").
"
PowerMac G4 500 AGP, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition and
PowerMac G4 400 AGP, 500 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
Many users have the same problem:
green and red artifacts in the place of the movie, unreadable!
The last updates (ATI ROM upd 10/04, ATI displays 4.5.1, DVD.app 4.6, OsX 10.4.1) do not regulate the problem.
With the old card ATI Rage Pro 128, DVD Playing is perfect, but it is not a solution (Warcraft is better with radeon 8500 !!)
Apparently the bug exists only on G4 AGP 400 450 500 or Cube, and only with card ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Ed.

If any other Tiger/8500 users seen this problem (or not), let me know. Just for the record note your 8500 firmware version and if you're running 10.4.1/DVD player 4.6, etc... (From the comments I assume it's not a problem with non-Apple players like VLC, Mplayer, etc.?) Thanks.
(Note - I had more than a dozen replies to this post and some 8500 owners didn't report any DVD problems, although some did. I'll be all the reports on a separate page as soon as I can but may be as late as Monday due to Memorial Day weekend.)

| Mod to enable 8GB/DL Project option in iDVD 5.0.1 for non-Apple supported DL drives |
(Updated - see below for reader report on Panther)
Two readers sent a note that Macbidouille has a post on mods to enable DL projects in iDVD 5.0.1 for Dual Layer DVD Burners that are not listed as "apple shipped/supported". (There were past reports on this option not showing in iDVD 5.0.1's Project Info window for non-Apple supported drives, even though they had basic iApps burn support and were listed as supporting DVD+R DL media.)
One of the readers said the hack enabled the 8GB project option for this DVR-108 drive and I suspect it will work for most other DL drives that normally don't show this option.
I've not tried this personally but Michael Bean of AMUG said it worked in Tiger but not in Panther.
"
Dear Mike,
Concerning the Mod to enable 8GB/DL Project option in iDVD 5.0.1
you might want to know that it only works with Tiger. If you install
it in Panther the 8GB option will not show up. Using 10.4.1 my
non-Apple Pioneer A09XL with the iDVD 5.0.1 patch installed now
shows 8GB support.
(I asked if he removed the Patchburn profile from 10.3.x for his drive, but of course for the DVR-108/A08, 109 and most other DL drives that profile is used for common iApps burn support in Panther.-Mike)
Yes, I used patchburn to remove Patchburn 3 as per the
note, while in 10.3.9. I then tried again and repaired
permissions. Still no 8GB in iDVD 5.01. As a side note,
this left 10.3.9 with an unsupported drive per system profiler.
That would be an undiserable effect in 10.3.9 even if it did
work. However, it does not.
I then copied the modified iDVD 5.0.1 to a Tiger 10.4.1 disk
with no patchburn installed as it recognizes the Pioneer A09XL
as a vendor supported Pioneer 109 in profiler. Now iDVD 5.0.1
(while Tiger is launched) shows 8.0GB capacity. I did not have
to remove or rename any file in the frameworks as the Hardmac
docs indicated might be needed with a Tiger supported drive.
Both tests were done using the same PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0GHz
with only different boot drives.

| Tiger driver for USB to Ethernet Adapter |
"
This may be of interest to the other Xlr8YourMac readers.
Finding USB to Ethernet that works with 10.4 is nearly impossible. I
have not tested these drivers.
This driver enables Pegasus-based USB 1.1 Ethernet adapters to work under Mac OS X 10.4. For more information, see here.

-Jonathan G.
"
The FAQ's Networking and USB sections has info/links on previous USB to Ethernet adapters with OS 9 and OS X drivers but no reports if the drivers worked in Tiger. I've added Jonathan's post to those FAQ items for future reference.

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 2 new reports added this morning. (Entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,732 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- Firewire (cased) Memorex Dual 8x used w/iBook 2002 (OS X 10.4)
(Listed under "Other" brands. Tiger ASP didn't list DVD+R/+RW support and noted 0MB cache?)
- IDE Sony DW-D22A in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)
(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand).
