| Reader Feedback on ModBook (Mac tablet computer) |
(reader reply to last week's news page link to Computerworld's Review of the Axiotron Modbook (Mac tablet))
"
Hi Mike, I had a chance to use a ModBook myself, but only for a few minutes. The experience is superior to my Cintiq 12" tablet, though with the same niggling limitations. I think the author of the review hits it on the head when he laments no keyboard or trackpad at all. It makes it less functional. But for the artist on the go, it is AMAZING. And because it's a macbook, it can be hooked up to an external display for presentations, including photoshop, flash and straight drawing demonstrations. I know many artists who are considering one now that I told them about it. I am considering selling my Cintiq and buying a ModBook (though not giving up my MacBook Pro).
As for the author lamenting the weight because he's "used to the MacBook Air" all I can say is cry me a river... ;)
-Mike K."
I've never used one of these (and not a Tablet computer fan) but welcome other reader feedback on the ModBook.

| Question on using HarperTown CPUs in Pre-2008 Mac Pros |
Last fall I posted info/reviews on swapping in Quad Core "Clovertown" CPUs in a Mac Pro (pre-2008 model of course) but have had several readers ask if anyone knows about compatibility with the later "HarperTown" quad-core Xeons in a pre-2008 Mac Pro. I've not dug into this to see if there's any socket or other compat. issues (core voltage, chipset, bus, etc.) but if you have let me know, thanks.
FYI - Although nothing definitive yet, I had a reader say it will likely not work (due to older intel chipset, different voltage, etc.) - I'd either go with Clovertown CPUs or sell the older Mac Pro and get a refub 2008 (with PCIe 2.0, faster ram, improved drive bays, etc. as well). Although intel cpu prices drop over time, I suspect a pair of harpertown's are not cheap right now (prices always drop over time though and the highest bin/speed parts always have a big premium...)
