Complaints regarding OS X Steam Games Location (w/symbolic link workaround)
Several readers have complained about the fact Steam stores the game files/content in your Documents folder and there's no way to change that. (There's also no way to change the location in windows steam either as far as I know.) A reader sent a note/complaint to steam support about this after he had install problems since his documents folder was linked to a small encrypted disk image. (His workaround was to create a symbolic link with the name of the required folder that pointed to another partition with more room.)
He later sent a copy of Steam Support's reply to his mail:

"Thank you for contacting Steam Support. Steam currently installs games to the Steam Content folder in your Documents folder. If your Documents folder uses a separate partition or is for some reason restricted, you will encounter this problem. We are aware of the problem and are investigating the issue further..."

Another reader sent a note on using a symbolic link workaround. (See post below this for a tip/shortcut - drag and drop folder location, no need to rename alias, etc.)

"I have been using a symbolic link.

Quit Steam,
Move the 'Steam Content' folder to anywhere you want. (For this example, the Applications folder)

Then go to terminal, issue:

cd ~/Documents
ln -s /Applications/Steam\ Content Steam

In finder, rename ~/Documents/Steam alias to 'Steam Content' without the apostrophes. Launch steam, and enjoy.
-Ali K."

And another reply to the above:

"Not sure why your other reader did it that way, but he can directly just create the sym link with the right name by typing this line once he navigates to the Documents folder.

    ln -s /Applications/Steam\ Content Steam\ Content

This eliminates the need to rename the sym link.
Or, do what I did, and simply drag and drop the folder from the Finder into Terminal, and Terminal will fill in the path section of the command for you. i.e.:

ln -s {drag Steam Content folder here from final location} Steam\ Content
-Mike K."
