|More info on 2011 iMac Main HD Upgrade Restrictions (Sensor/Fan Speeds/AHT)|
After hearing stories of high (max/failsafe mode) Fan speeds after replacing the HD in a 2011 iMac, I thought it might be related to the previous series (2009/10) HD brand specific cables/sensor, but according to an early morning Blog post at OWC, things have gotten even more restrictive in 2011 models. Here's a short clip but see the link for the full report
"For the main 3.5" SATA hard drive bay in the new 2011 machines, Apple has altered the SATA power connector itself from a standard 4-pin power configuration to a 7-pin configuration. Hard drive temperature control is regulated by a combination of this cable and Apple proprietary firmware on the hard drive itself.
From our testing, we've found that removing this drive from the system, or even from that bay itself (losing chassis GND?-Mike), causes the machine's hard drive fans to spin at maximum speed and replacing the drive with any non-Apple original drive will result in the iMac failing the Apple Hardware Test (AHT)"
I look forward to the various workarounds for this that I'm sure will appear. (Do previous utils like HDD Fan Control work w/2011 iMacs?)
(Update - on Friday OWC posted a better/more detailed blog page on this issue.)
