1) Try using a direct connected wired USB mouse and power up with the mouse button held down. (If using 2 button mouse, hold left button down.)
2) Otherwise carefully check for an eject hole at the very edge of the optical drive slot. (Not visible due to foam strips in disc slot used to keep dust out.) YMMV but some slotted drives have this feature for manual eject using a paperclip, etc.
3) Never tried this with a failed boot HD in target mac, but another option is to try FireWire target disk mode with another Mac to see if the disc mounts. (Assuming it's an SATA drive. If an older PATA iMac, only master drive mounts.)
