  5/25/99 Tuesday's News:
Updated: 2:00 PM EST

Several readers have written about posts on the net regarding Digitek complaints and asked that I post a notice. See today's MacResource page for the full story.

Trade-up your iMac Rev B: [Update: Gordon replied he has gotten a taker and thanks all those that wrote.] Gordon Bell of Prosoft Engineering wrote to ask me if I'd post a note that he's looking to trade a new rev D iMac for an *unmodified* rev B iMac. I assume this is a first come/first served offer (one only).

"Hey Mike,
I need something that I think your reader's can help out with.

I need to get a Rev. B iMac-It cannot have any changes to it (CPU clock changes or anything like that). I will trade a brand new Rev D iMac for it (they can even chose the color)! Go ahead and put my email address there for anyone interested!
gordon "

I reminded him that Microconversions $349 (SRP) iMac modification includes a Voodoo2, Subwoofer mod and speed bump if all he was after was a mezzanine slot but I suspect he might want an IR port as well or just a pristine rev B model.

TurboMax Review: I've posted a review of the Promax TurboMax PCI IDE controller tested in a 9600/350 with a Western Digital 18GB Expert IDE drive. I was very pleased with the compatibility and performance and will be buying at least one more card for use with my PowerCenter Pro system.

Daniel Hines reports that the TrueX CDROM drive is not compatible with CVGS (as expected).

"Mike
Put the 52X in my Beige G3 because of the good things I read on your site. Works great for everything except VGS. If I load the CD it shows up on the desktop just fine. If I then launch VGS it does not read the CD. If I launch VGS first then insert the disk - it reads for a couple of seconds and then ejects the disk. Oh well - at least I have a real PSX too!
Dan"

[Dan later reported he had no fit problems in his Beige G3 MiniTower (it was close like in the 9600 but the tray cleared)] Officially CVGS requires an Apple CDROM drive but some have used the hacked CDROM driver with some success in the past I'm told, but not sure if the latest version still works that way.

This reader feedback on the Kenwood TrueX drive notes a AudioCD program I've not heard of before (NetCD):

"Mike,
I just installed my Kenwood TrueX CD-ROM. Everything you said rings true! This drive Rocks!!. I have had no problem aside from the Apple CD player not working correctly.

I found that if you use NetCD it works just fine. The interface looks nicer and it downloads the CD name and music tracks off the web so you don't have to type them in. If that's not great enough its FREE! No sense waiting around for Apple to update their player.
Thanks for a great web-site I read it a couple times daily! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks!
Truman Whiting "

I'm running the drive in my 9600 with the TurboMax card (not audio cd compatible with that card, at least under OS 8.1) and have been impressed with the drive as noted in my review.

Powerlogix issued a press release on their $699 466MHz ZIF CPU upgrade (466/233/1MB). For reviews of their 466/311 ZIF and other models see my CPU Cards page.

Powerlogix also announced a combo cache control/speedmeter utility called G3 Cache Profiler. I assume this works like the current XLR8 cache control that automatically tests the maximum reliable cache speed. A full list of features and download links are at Powerlogix's Software page.

Charles Archer posed an interesting question - has anyone tested the OS X voodoo2 drivers (noted in yesterday's news) with a dual card/SLI setup? If so contact me.

Nick Klingaman sent a note we rated a mention in the Baltimore Sun newspaper!

"Mike,
Just thought you'd like to know that Accelerate Your Mac! was mentioned (and given high praise) by a front page Baltimore Sun article in the "Plugged In" technology section that comes out every Monday. The article was about replacing the processors in old Macs with G3 upgrade cards. The writer must've stumbled upon your wonderful database because he wrote:

"Before buying a CPU upgrade card, shop around. Make your first stop a Web site called Accelerate Your Mac (www.xlr8yourmac.com) which has exhaustive documentation as well as reviews of many upgrade cards."

Word sure gets around, doesn't it? Well, you deserve the recognition for all the hard work you put into the site. Thanks!
Nick Klingaman
Columnist, 1984 OnLine Magazine"

I see the article in question (dealing with CPU upgrades) is also online. Thanks Nick!

If you own a G3/300 or faster Mac, you might want to get our PPC Checker utility that will report if your CPU is copper or aluminum based.

Considering a G3 Upgrade? Check the CPU Upgrade Owner's Survey results and search for owner reports by Mac model and/or card brand. The database is being updated daily for new reports. Also make sure you ask your dealer about any issues with current builds of some models (ie PF G3) as I have gotten several reports of issues with certain mac models in the last few months (Mach 5, PowerBase, 7300). I urge any owners that have had problems to report this via the Survey Form. Always give the most weight to recent owner reports (dated in the listing).

Note: Before sending tech support related questions please check the Answers to Common Questions, Site Contents, CPU Card reviews/articles, SCSI reviews articles, Graphics card reviews, Tips/Misc, Message Boards and Help pages - in many cases the answers to your questions are there and they have far more detail than I can list in an email. For Apple G3 system info - see the G3-ZONE. For links on recent articles, see the Recent Features page. Please try the Men in Mac Help page as an alternative on requests for tech support to help me be able to spend more time on reviews and getting caught up in mail. Thanks.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.

Thanks to my wife Kay, the ultimate computer widow
for putting up with all the time I spend with the site work, tests and email.
