Top stories of Nov. 8th, 2000:

Notes on OpenGL 1.1.5 and Voodoo5:
I forgot to mention in the Radeon/Rage128 driver update comments that I saw problems with a Voodoo5 in my G4 using the OpenGL 1.1.5 drivers, even when just using the Voodoo5 alone (no ATI drivers). As I noted in my review of the retail Radeon game tests page, I could not test Quake3 with the Voodoo5 running OpenGL 1.1.5 as no mouse or keyboard input was recognized. Just a FYI to Voodoo5 owners to make sure they keep a copy of OpenGL 1.1.3 just in case they see the same thing. (I reported this to 3dfx back when I first saw it during Radeon review testing.)

Readers Comments on ATI Radeon/Rage128 Driver Update:
Several readers replied with comments on yesterday's Radeon/Rage128 1.0 Driver Update. Like past ATI drivers, the Control Panel does not work with OEM/BTO cards that shipped with Mac systems. Some reader comments noted better game performance with the Radeon, but some users of older cards/macs noted they lost some monitor resolution/refresh rate settings they previously had. See the Radeon 1.0 Driver Feedback page for reader reports/comments on the update.

Mac Radeon Loyalty/Trade-Up Program Status:
As noted here some months ago, there is to be a trade-up/loyalty program on ATI's Radeon graphics card, although the ATI site does not yet have details. I followed the ATI FAQ links to this Radeon FAQ which question 15 says there will be a 'loyalty' program

"Once the boards are shipping RADEON MAC EDITION will be part of the ATI trade up program. Please see the Trade up section of our web site for future announcements. "

The tradeup page linked however doesn't show anything yet regarding the Radeon so I asked my ATI contact for the status:

" The RADEON Mac Edition will become part of the ATI regular 'Trade Up Program' probably in a month or so. Basically we give the distribution channels first priority on inventory and we will stock the program only when there is inventory to support it. So there is no set date.
-Deanna"

The Mac ATI Trade-up page should be updated in the future with details.

Unreal Tournament 436 Update Available:
(For those that missed the late news post on this last night) Get the 3.4MB updater at: www.westlakeinteractive.com/download0021.html or use this direct download link. (You must have your original UT CD to apply this update.) Westlake notes the following update tips:

Installation tips- If you have trouble installing 436, try these:
  • make sure you don't have any disk images of UT mounted (just the real CD)
  • If the updater can't find your UT application, copy it and the UT "system" folder to your startup partition, then run the update and copy the app & folder back into your real UT folder.
  • If all else fails, reinstall the game from the CD then do the update.
