Top stories of Nov. 10th, 2000:

ATTO Announces 2GigaBit Fibre Channel Controller:
ATTO has announced the ExpressPCI FC 3300, a 2 Gigabit/sec 64-bit PCI form factor card providing up to 400 MB/second throughput in full-duplex mode they say. Fibre channel never had the mass-market appeal (or availiability and drive support) that more popular interfaces like SCSI and IDE have enjoyed.

Speaking of 64bit controllers, I tested the Adaptec 39160 1.02 firmware update noted earlier today with my G4/500 and Atlas 10K series 1 drive. There was no real performance difference from the 1.01 firmware, but the series 1 Atlas 10K drive is clearly a bottleneck. Write speeds are still lower than I would expect, even considering that drive series. For more on this issue see the previously posted 39160 performance page. (I'm awaiting test results from Rod Paine of ASTEC, a Mac VAR specializing in RAID to see what benefit (if any) the update has for faster RAID arrays. Rod's previous tests are among those on the 39160 performance page here.)

IBM Announces World's Highest Resolution Display - 12x Sharper than Current Designs:
Yahoo has an interesting press release today on the world's highest resolution display from IBM. With an "Image as Clear as an Original Photograph" the new design active matrix LCD display is said to be 12-times sharper than current displays, and appearing 10 years sooner than industry experts said was possible. The new displays are expected to ship in 2001; no pricing was mentioned. (I wonder how pricing will compare to Apple's $4000 (appx.) Cinema Display?)

Adaptec 1.02 Firmware Update for 39160 SCSI Card:
Although it's not listed at Adaptec's 39160 product page yet, their FTP site has a 1.02 updater for the 39160. You should use the PowerDomain 6.1.1 control panel with this update (also at their FTP site). The readme notes this fixes issues with multiple 39160s in B&W G3 and later Macs, but warns that installing more than one 39160 in a Beige G3 will cause the system not to boot. I hope the update may also addresse the lower than expected write performance noted in the 39160 performance page here earlier this year.

I welcome comments on this update (performance tests before/after, etc.). Please include your system and hard drive details in reports. Thanks!

Orange Micro to Show USB 2.0 Controllers at Comdex:
Orange Micro has a press release on their USB 2.0 controller cards to be shown at Comdex. The OrangeUSB PCI card will ship in limited quantities in December 2000. Full production quantities will be available in January with an MSRP of $89.00. The OrangeLink+ FireWire/USB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI card will ship in February with an MSRP of $149.00. The OrangeUSB Hub will ship in February and will have an MSRP of $89.00. I don't have any idea when high speed USB 2.0 devices will be available however to take advantage of the USB 2.0 faster transfer speeds. The max interface spec of USB 2.0 is 480Mbits/s, slightly faster than current Firewire interfaces. However like Firewire, the device itself is likely to be a limiting factor.

Mac Voodoo4 4500 Review:
(for those that missed last night's update) Reader Mark Anthony wrote a review of the Mac Voodoo4 PCI card that I've just posted. He included comments on the install, tests in 2d apps, 3d games and comments on FSAA and image quality. Check it out. (It's added to the Video articles page here for future reference.)

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
