3dfx Comments on Mfg Change and Mac Products:
Talk about dedication; Lisa Grubb of 3dfx replied (from the Vegas Comdex show) to my email questions regarding the move out of the card manufacturing business noted earlier today:

" Hi from Las Vegas Mike,

(Mike) does this mean any impacts on the mac products?

No.

(Mike) or simply getting another company to build the boards?

Yes.

(Mike) Just wondering how this affects current and future mac products. (esp. current models)

Allow me to explain.

Our business strategy is changing. As I stated to Chris this morning, we are reinventing ourselves. We are shifting from a AIB manufacturer to a fabless chip and AIB model. In addition to ASIC sales, we will be outsourcing our board manufacturing retaining the Voodoo brand in the retail channel. The purpose is to lower costs and improve flexibility. We are implementing strict fiscal controls that will increase our profits and grow our bottom line.

Hope that helps,
lg"

3dfx Changes Direction - Leaving Board Mfg Business?
Bryan Berndt sent a link to a CNNfn article titled "3dfx Changes Direction" that mentions one board manufacturing plant is being closed and that they are moving away building graphics cards. This would mean they are going back to their original business of selling chips to 3rd party board manufacturers, rather than buidling/selling the cards under their own brand name. (Nvidia also does this, as did 3dfx for years before merging with STB.) The article quotes 3dfx spokesperson Lisa Grubb (met her at MWNY) as saying that the company is trying to be more fiscally responsible and is "reinventing ourselves".

How does this affect the Mac retail cards? It may be some time before this change is made, but I've asked my contacts at 3dfx if they can comment on how this will affect current and future Mac graphics cards. (See the later update with Lisa Grubb's comments.)
[Note - 3dfx went out of business in 2001, selling assets to Nvidia.]

Some Note Lower Game Performance w/OpenGL 1.2.1:
I've updated the OpenGL 1.2.1 Feedback page with more reader reports, two noting lower 3D game performance (retail Radeon owner and Rage128 OEM card owner). In a quick Quake3 test at 1024x768/32bit on my BTO Radeon equipped dual G4/500 I saw literally the same framerates as with the ATI drivers and OpenGL shipped with the system. That was only a quick test in Quake3 however.

Also added to the OpenGL page is a list of the changes from OpenGL versions 1.1.3 to 1.2. (1.2.1 is not listed however).

Netscape 6 First Impressions:
[I've gotten about a dozen replies to this post from other readers on NS 6, I'll post those comments in tomorrow's news.] I'm sticking with Netscape 4.x for now, but a reader sent his opinion of the recently released Netscape v6:

"Let me be the first to advise your readers, Netscape 6 is less than it is cracked up to be. It is NOT faster, it does NOT render pages better, and I don't recommend it.

It is smaller. It is a clone of IE 5. It is messy and confusing.
I am running it on a G3/500 upgraded 9500 w/256 Mb of overall RAM under OS 9.04.

Let me reiterate. It is messy. The interface looks like somebody tried to steal a computer console from a B-science fiction movie.

What ever happened to simple and clean, utility and efficiency?
-- John W. Grubb"

What's your opinion of Netscape v6?

OpenGL 1.2.1 Reader Reports - Including DVD/OS 8.6 Warning :
Several readers sent comments on OpenGL 1.2.1 which was included in the CroMag Rally Demop (noted in yesterday's game news page). OpenGL 1.2.1 also includes ATI graphics card extensions, which some commented resulted in lost resolutions as did some readers with the previous Radeon 1.0 driver update. One reader noted an issue with DVD playback in some Macs running OS 8.6 that is mentioned in the readme, saying the installer would not run on his iMac DV for this reason. (Some Macs like B&W G3s and Yikes have a hardware decoder/player, so not sure this applies to them.) See the OpenGL 1.2.1 Feedback page for details.

Reader Article on LW 3D, Flash5, Fireworks 3 w/Radeon Update 1.0/Nexus128:
A reader sent an illustrated article on his experience with Lightwave 3D v6 , Form Z 3.0, Flash 5 & Fireworks 3 with a 32MB Nexus128 graphics card using the Radeon 1.0 driver update. I've added this article link to the Radeon 1.0 Driver Update Feedback page as well.

World's Largest Capacity Drive - Seagate's 180GB Barracuda:
Nic Sanctum sent a note that Seagate has announced a 180GB Barracuda model (7,200 RPM, Ultra160 SCSI) that's not only large, but very quiet as well. At $2195 (current sample list) it's not for everyone's budget however, but for businesses that need massive storage in a single drive (or huge arrays), this sounds like the ticket.

Reader Comments on Seeing IBM's High-Res Display:
Last week there was a press release noted here on the world's highest resolution display produced by IBM (10 years ahead of expectations). One reader said he was able to actually see the display at a recent show and wrote with info and impressions of it.
" Mike,
I was at SuperComputing2000 conference last week in Dallas. I was able to interact quite a bit with the new display.
When I first walked up to it, I thought it was a large, backlit display of "proofs" of some photos. Boy, was I surprised...

After talking to the IBM rep about it here are some facts:

1) There is only one in existence and that was it.

2) That one was actually on loan from Lawrence Livermore Labs for the conference.

3) The expected price will be around $20K, in about a year.

4) It was built in Japan at the same facility that builds their other displays.

5) They were using two Matrox Dual-monitor display cards to drive it.

6) With the display, they also had a realtively high-powered magnifying glass that was needed to even see the individual pixels.

7) It had four fans in the bottom helping cool the internals. (They were so quiet that I did not realize they were there until I looked and felt the airflow. The unit was hardly even warm.)

8) It requires a custom graphics driver (naturally).

Simply unbelievable resolution and color. I could not find even one dead pixel after scanning it for several minutes. Hats off to IBM.
(name withheld by request)"

More info on the display is at this yahoo press release.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
