Accelerate Your Mac! News Archive for: 11/19/2001 Monday's NewsReturn to Accelerate Your Mac!

Top stories of Nov. 19th, 2001:

When Ground Shipping Goes Bad... really bad.
I thought I had seen some badly damaged packages and contents over the years, but this guy's page showning how his computers were damaged in shipping takes the cake. Maybe Ace Ventura is really delivering packages now? (If you saw the first Ace Ventura movie you know what I mean, but I don't think even Ace's efforts were this complete.)
[Note - some readers commented on how the computers on that page did not look like they were well packed for items that size/weight. Best to use the original system boxes/packaging styrofoam, etc. but I have seen damaged computers even when packed well and in the original MFR's packaging, but not to the extent of the damage shown in the above page (box and contents).]

Entourage 2001 - Hotmail Updater:
One of today's software updates includes a Entourage 2001 - Hotmail Updater. If you don't own Entourage, according to a reader report, the Outlook Express 5.03 update a week or so ago also fixes the problem.

Another Reader Comments on using FWB Backup Toolkit for OS X:
I've updated the page with Reader Experiences with FWB Backup Toolkit for OS X with another users comments. He noted some errors and asked if any other users are seeing the same thing. (He also noted why his download was v2.2 originally.) For more info on Backup Toolkit v3, see this FWB page.

Apple 17 inch LCD Display - Owner Notes Menu Bar Burn-In:
This weekend there was a forum post from the owner of an Apple 17" LCD display noting he's seen what appears to be burn-in of the menu bar area. I've not noticed this on my other Apple LCD displays, even on powerbooks where they are run for many hours each day. I don't own a 17" Apple LCD however. (The reader that wrote the 17" Studio Display review here has not mentioned it yet at least.) I posted a link to an Apple tech doc on LCDs and burn-in that notes the effect is usually only seen after having a static image on the display for 24 hours or so and notes leaving it off for between one to two times as long will remove it.
Also noted in that TIL is the same tip I have used for years with LCDs - don't run screensavers , use Energy Saver settings to turn off the display after a period of inactivity to extend the life of the backlight. (As well as saving battery power if you're running a notebook computer on the battery.)

Source for Beige G3 Desktop CD Bay Bezels:
One of the latest additions to the Drive Compat. Database was from a Plextor 16x IDE drive owner with a Beige G3 Desktop that noted he bought a 7500 bezel (faceplate) from Sun Remarketing
Proline also sells drive sleds, bezels etc. for Macs, but does not list a Beige/7x00 Desktop CD bezel when I checked there today. (I have used their MiniTower Beige G3 bezels in the past - they sold an "open face" bezel.)

Maxtor Firewire Drive Owner Comments on FWB's Maxtor Specific Driver:
[Update - see the story in the 11/20/2001 news page for a driver settings tip that may solve the problem without needing to buy a 3rd party driver like FWB. Also note the below comment may not help those with later Maxtor 3000DV (faster firewire bridge based cases from Maxtor) - one 3000DV owner later reported that FWB v4.5 did not work with his 3000DV Maxtor FW drive. )
(From one of the weekend's entries in the drive compatibility database)
Maxtor 80GB Firewire drive
Beige G3 running OS 9.2
" Hard drive would not work at all with Maxtor's FireWire driver 3.2. I was able to mount the drive with Apple's drivers, but initialization failed repeatedly. I tried FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit 4.0 drivers without success. Maxtor tech support was clueless. The tech suspected that the problem was due to incompatibility with the OrangeLink PCI FireWire/USB card. Wrong.

I upgraded to Hard Disk Toolkit 4.5, installed its new FireWire drivers, and can now use the drive. HDT 4.5 has a Maxtor-specific FireWire driver! Maxtor does not know how to write FireWire drivers for the Macintosh and should license FWB's driver.
Gregory Tetrault "

Good to hear that FWB solved the problems. I could be wrong (never owned a Maxtor FW drive) but I doubt Maxtor wrote the software (I suspect they licensed Radialogic, Charismac, Intech, or some other driver/extension but have not seen their software personally.) [Update - a Maxtor asst. product manager spotted this post and said their supplied drivers are licensed from Intech (HD speedtools) and asked for Gregory's contact info to help resolve the problems he had.]
Some in the past noted the (free) heat utils/driver at helped, but it may not for all users. There must be some FW/IDE bridge issue with their cases perhaps. [The FW/USB combo card feedback page here has also noted problems from some combo card owners.] This is why I prefer to just build my own FW drives using case kits - usually much cheaper, more capacity per $ and often faster to boot. (Until the 3000DV models, the Maxtor cases didn't seem to have a fast bridge like the Oxford911 bridge based cases.)
The Firewire articles page has illustrated guides to building FW case kits - both portable and AC powered ones. Or you can buy a pre-built case from Mac dealers often for less than the retail maxtor FW drives.

More Reports on OS X SCSI CDRW Helper from El Gato:
The drive database (see links below) had many more entries with comments on using El Gato's SCSI CDRW Helper. Several noted that the tip on reinstalling iTunes after the El Gato software fixed problems burning CDs with Toast's beta for OS X.
Several legacy mac owners noted that after removing the .kext file (noted in the El Gato install tips) their internal CDROM drive was no longer recognized however.
You can search the Drive Compatibility database for these reports by selecting "El Gato" as a driver selection and OS X as the OS version (also selecting SCSI as the interface and optionally a drive brand).

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 49 new reports added this morning. The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 5,460 reports. [Entries after Midnight are added the following newsday morning.]
(Note - Please include your CD/CDRW drive speed in the entry. And Please do not post questions in the database, use email for that and check the database and articles here for answers/tips/guides first. )
(Running late with the news this morning and there were too many reports over the weekend to list them here as I normally do.)

You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
