OS X 10.2.2 Update Released
It's available via OS X software update. Build is shown as 6F21. Here's a list of changes noted in the Software Update window:

" The 10.2.2 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications and technologies: Address Book, iChat, IP Firewall, Mail, Print Center, Rendezvous, Sherlock and Windows file service discovery. The update also includes the updated services previously delivered in Security Update 2002-09-20.

For detailed information on this Update, please visit
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107140
(Link now working - has a long list of changes/fixes/improvements in several areas as well as links to a Kbase doc on the Combo 10.2.0->10.2.2 update. (Download links should appear at http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html or recent updates page soon.-Mike)

I'm installing it now on the PB G4 and will report back if any problems are seen. If this update fixes any past issues for you - or causes any, let me know. Include system details in reports. (Thanks to Matthew Culmore for the heads-up call)

Note - usually OS X updates overwrite modified plugin files (from the FAQ here for unsupported drives) so you'll usually need to reinstall those after the update if 10.2.2 still doesn't support your drive.

I've also posted a page of OS X 10.2.2 Update reader feedback.

November 2002 iBook 7500 Radeon Mobility Owner Report/Tip on Dual Display Firmware Mod
I've updated the page of reader reports on the firmware mod for dual display support on iBook Radeon Mobility chip versions with the first report from a November 2002 iBook (w/Radeon 7500 mobility) report on this mod. (Note - remember even some 2002 radeon mobility iBook owners noted failures after the mod - so don't try this unless you're willing to risk a failure.)

" Dear XLR8YourMac,
I am writing to let you know that the firmware monitor spanning hack WORKS on my new November 2002 iBook. This is the recently released model with the 32 MB Radeon 7500 card. Mine is the mid-level (12" with 32MB VRAM) version.

I've also done some research into Open Firmware, and I have an important suggestion to people trying this hack. The instructions available on the web use "nvstore" and "setenv" to store a boot script and set a flag in NVRAM (non-volatile flash memory) to run that script at startup before OS X loads. Writing anything into flash is serious business.

To test the hack before committing it to flash, I suggest that the boot script be run--BUT NOT SAVED--using the commands "nvrun" and then "mac-boot" instead of "nv-store" and "setenv". The first command runs the script that was entered using nvedit, but without actually saving it to Flash. The second command exits Open Firmware and boots up OS X. In this way, one can test the dual monitor hack before committing it to Flash. Once confident that the hack works, it can then be burned into the Flash using the previously documented procedure. If it doesn't work, then the next reboot will at least be normal.

As always, this is presented for information only, and I can not be liable for any damage that this seemingly safer procedure may cause to anyone's computers.
Thanks
Rex Min "

More Acard/SIIG IDE Card Deep Sleep OS X Driver Feedback
I've updated the page of reader reports on the Acard IDE and SCSI adapter beta driver for OS X deep sleep support noted in the earlier Friday news page. Some noted the drive worked to enable deep sleep, others didn't.
As I said in that original post, since it's a test version, cautious individuals may want to wait for a later version of the driver. However if any other readers do try this beta/test version, let me know your card model/mac system details and if it worked. If you're running a RAID setup, also make a note of that. (Deep Sleep is not supported with G4/PCI Yikes, B&W G3 and older Macs.)

Comments on Delay of Mac F1 Racing Game (Updated)
(from a reader email - a forum post noted a mac demo was posted earlier this weekend but pulled due to problems)

" Hey there Mike,
I just recieved this email from Feral Interactive stating that the release of F1 2000 Championship was pushed back even further to November 22nd. It was already delayed to November 8th. To make up for the long delay they will include a copy of Oni when F1 2000 ships. Now that is some nice customer support... I wish more companies were so good for us. Also as a result of the delay the game should be performing much better and near bug-free.
Thijs
Note: forwarded message attached.
Subject: f1 pre-order (was Re: Order received)
Dear PIM:
Thanks for your pre-order of F1 Championship Season 2000.
I am writing to you to let you know that there is a delay of a few weeks on the release date. When you placed your order our website announced that it would be released on October 18th - unfortunately we have had to push the release date back. The revised release date is Friday, November 22nd. Please accept our apologies for this.

I understand how irritating this may be for you and if you wish us to refund your order we will do so immediately upon your request.

However - the good news is that the game is finished, it looks great and is now being manufactured and should be ready to be sent out to you in two weeks

I am very aware of how patient you have been and as a thank you for that we will include a free copy of "Oni" (one of our most popular games from 2001) with your order.
Thank you for your custom - it is much appreciated.
Best Regards,
David S.
Feral Interactive Limited"

I don't know if only the pre-orders will get the bundled Oni game. (swamped here but did write David to ask)
Update - as I noted i the original post, I wrote Feral to ask if the free Oni game was only for pre-orders. Here's their reply

" Hi Mike:
Thanks for your e-mail. It was only offered to those people who had pre-ordered early - it was offered by way of an apology for the product having slipped by two months. So you are correct it was only offered to people pre-ordering and only to those who had ordered prior to October 18th.
I hope that clarifies it for you.
Best Regards,
David
(Feral Interactive Limited)"

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
