Firmware Update for Mac Nvidia GeForce2MX/4MX/GeForce3 Cards
Versiontracker today lists the Nvidia Firmware Update that adds Apple Cinema HD support to Mac GeForce2MX (incl. TwinView models), GeForce3 and GeForce4MX cards. Here's a clip from the Apple kbase doc on the update:

" NVIDIA Graphics Card Firmware Update
This firmware update is for customers using Mac OS X version 10.2 (Jaguar) or later with an Apple Cinema HD Display and a Power Mac G4 with one of the following NVIDIA graphics cards: GeForce2 MX, GeForce2 MX TwinView, GeForce3, or GeForce4 MX.

These cards require the update to support the high resolution of the Cinema HD Display. The update is required only for customers using Mac OS X 10.2 or later. If you are using Mac OS 9.2.2, or earlier versions of Mac OS X (version 10.1.x), you can use the Apple Display Software on the CD provided with the Cinema HD Display.

You should update the graphics card firmware (using this update or the Apple Display Software) before you connect your Apple Cinema HD Display to your computer. "

I have an older Geforce2MX card and GeForce3 and may flash them just to make sure I have the latest firmware even though I don' t own a Cinema HD display.

EyeTV 1.04 Update adds New Features and Bug Fixes
(from their email on the 1.04 update)

"Hello EyeTV Users,
I'm pleased to announce the release of EyeTV 1.0.4. The new version is available for download at The Read Me (see below) lists the many new features and bug fixes that are in this version.
Adam Steinberg/El Gato Software LLC "

The readme file details new features (Applescript support, waking your Mac to record shows, New Preferences items, Watson scheduling support), Bug fixes and know issues.

" Welcome to EyeTV 1.0.4!
What's new in this version?
If you are updating from any previous version of EyeTV, drag the old EyeTV application to the Trash. Drag the new EyeTV 1.0.4 application to your previous install location (or wherever you like), then launch the new software.

When you first launch EyeTV 1.0.4, you will be prompted to enter an admin password. This authentication is required to enable the new wake from sleep feature (see "Waking your Mac" under New Features).

New Features
AppleScript Support
EyeTV now offers full AppleScript support. The majority of the application can be controlled by scripts, including:

  • Creating and deleting programs and recordings
  • Editing program information
  • Controlling playback and recording
  • Selecting channels and editing their names
  • Changing the volume
  • Exporting to QuickTime or VideoCD
  • Much more

Waking your Mac
EyeTV will now wake or power up your system to record shows. This feature only works with Mac OS 10.2 or later. To take advantage of this feature we recommend that you simply leave the EyeTV application running with the live TV window closed. In this mode EyeTV will use practically no CPU time and the system can go to sleep as specified in the System Preferences Energy Saver panel. EyeTV wakes up your Mac two minutes before the scheduled recording starts, therefore do not set the system sleep interval to less than two minutes. Please note that the system will not go to sleep while a live TV window is open.

Other scenarios may require a little more planning, e.g. if you shut down your Mac then EyeTV will power it up on time, but recording will work only if automatic login is enabled and EyeTV is configured to launch automatically. For details please refer to the EyeTV User's Guide.

New Preferences Items
The "General" tab in the preferences window features a new "Always open Live TV window at startup" checkbox. When unchecked, EyeTV will remember whether the live TV window was open or closed. Note that the live TV window will always be opened when the EyeTV hardware is plugged in while the application is running.

The new "Controls" tab allows customization of the jump times used by the "Jump" (right arrow) and "Instant Replay" (left arrow) commands.

Watson Scheduling Support
Karelia Software's Watson product can be used to schedule EyeTV recordings. Please visit to purchase Watson 1.6 or download an evaluation copy.

Bug fixes
Downloaded Schedules
Digital, Digital Cable, or Satellite Listings downloaded from defaulted to A/V input, and did not display a channel number. The channel number is now included with the scheduled program, as a reminder when tuning the cable box or receiver.

Recordings Not Stopping
If a repeating recording was scheduled to start one day, and end on another day (like from 11:30PM to 12:30AM), the last recording of that week wouldn't stop. This has been fixed.

Maximizing From Dock to Full Screen
EyeTV would freeze when video was maximized from the Dock to Full Screen. This has been fixed.

Overall Stability Improvements
Various minor or cosmetic bugs were fixed.

Known Issues
The following problems will be fixed in a later version of the EyeTV software.

With EyeTV it is easy to fill up a hard disk completely. EyeTV 1.0.4 does not always issue appropriate warnings when it runs out of disk space, nor does it recover gracefully from disk full conditions. We recommend that you monitor disk space requirements for scheduled recordings and frequently compare it against the space available on the hard disk containing the EyeTV Archive.

While EyeTV is running continuously, the Mac's CPU usage rises to very high levels from time to time. This can be eliminated by pausing/playing live TV, and the condition also goes away by itself after a few minutes.

When viewing a recording or live TV in fast reverse mode, EyeTV stops updating the screen after a few seconds. Note that the QuickTime Player has the same problem and we are working with Apple to work around this issue. "

OS X Firmware Update for Advansys UW and U2W SCSI cards
(from a reader mail - I do not own one of these cards)

" Hi Mike,
I own an Ultra-2-Wide SCSI adapter frmm Advansys, that I had removed from my B&W G3 (Rev 1!), thinking that I will never be able to use it and my 18 GB Quantum Atlas IV in OS X.

Advansys was aquired by Initio and - to my surprise - I recently found updated firmware and drivers for the ABP3940 UW/U2W SCSI adapters.

The firmware update worked fine in OS 9.2.2 -- the still very fast drive can now be used under OS X 10.2.2.
Information about these updates seems to appear noplace else.
Dr. Jorg P. "

Note - see the Wednesday's news page for a reader comment on some SIIG SCSI cards based on the Advansys chip.
