| Photoshop CS vs Photoshop 7.0.1 (w/G5 update) Performance tests |
| (Update - as promised I ran individual filter/action tests of PS CS vs PS 7.0.1./G5 to see more detail
on where the PS CS vs PS 7 performance deltas were. The major reason for the slower total times with CS in the tests below are due to some much slower
performance on a few filters that took a large portion of the total time of the 20 filter/action script. (Note - instead of a bug in those filters some think they have have improvements/accuracy fixes which result in much longer times.) After the G5 optimized comments on Apple's CS page, many G5 owners expected CS to be faster at literally everything than PS 7, but that's not the case in the first release of CS. Future updates to CS should address those filters that clearly had performance issues.)
(original news post follows) My Photoshop CS Upgrade arrived recently and I installed it on the Dual G5 under 10.3. I searched the entire CD for any "G5" specific optional plugins/extensions and found none, so I assume the default install has G5 support/optimizations embedded. (The CS readme file also says to not use PS 7 plugins with CS.) I launched PS CS and set the preferences to match those used for my recent PS 7.0.1(G5) tests (History and cache set to 4, scratch disk set to a separate non-journaled volume, max PS memory use set to appx 1.8GB (max) with 4GB of RAM installed) and then ran the same 20 filter action script as used with PS 7.0.1 to see how performance compared on the Dual G5 w/4GB of RAM installed. I know CS adds some new features that many welcome, but many expected CS to be more optimized after the comments at Apple's website page on Photoshop CS:
"
Optimized for the Power Mac G5
The Power Mac G5's high bandwidth architecture and 64-bit processor provide
a huge boost to the new Adobe Creative Suite. ... To speed your work even more, both Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS are optimized to take advantage of the G5. ... Photoshop CS integrates (emphasis mine) the software from the G5 Processor Plug-in to modify many Photoshop
operations such as the new RAW format support to fully utilize the Power Mac
G5's capabilities...
"
Although Adobe's PS CS page didn't note that, I had hoped for improved performance over v7.0.1 (w/G5 update) running on the Dual G5, but saw the opposite. Here's a graph of the results of running the same 20 filter/actions script with 4GB of RAM installed in the G5.
I later also ran the 108.3MB image file test with 1.5GB of RAM installed and PS set to use 70% of available RAM. (As before, no other apps running.)
108.3MB image file/20 filter/actions
- PS CS = 330 sec.
- PS 7.0.1(G5) = 225 sec.
I've written an Adobe contact to see if he has any suggestions/comments on this. I checked Adobe's website support/downloads page for any PS CS updates and as of Nov.11th, there are none. As I mentioned previously, Photoshop CS like previous versions can't recognize more than 2GB of installed RAM.
As time allows, I want to run the PSBench script which allows recording the times for each filter to see more than just a total time comparison. (i.e. are all filters slower or are there some specific filters that are much slower in PS CS than 7.0.1.)
In the meantime I've added the above to the previous page of PS tests with 512MB to 8GB of RAM installed in the G5.

| 1GB Memory Modules for iBook G4s |
| Transintl sent a press release on their 1GB memory modules for the new iBook G4 (800MHz to 1GHz models).
"Trans Intl. today announced the availability of a 1 Gigabyte (GB) DDR (Double Data Rate) memory upgrade module for the newly released Apple ibook G4 800 Mhz, 933 Mhz, 1 Ghz Model.Trans Intl.'s 1 Gigabyte (GB) memory modules double the system's main memory in the ibook G4 models to 1152 Megabytes (MB) of available RAM.
The ibook G4 models have one available memory expansion slot for main memory expansion and 128 MB of RAM soldered on the system logic board. Trans Intl.'s 1 Gigabyte (GB) memory upgrades double the memory density of the available memory expansion slot to 1 GB. Without this upgrade, the system memory capacity was limited to a total of 640 MB of main memory as currently specified in Apple documentation. Pricing and availability:
Apple iBook G4 800 Mhz 12 inch Model,
G4 933 Mhz 14 inch Model and G4 1 Ghz 14 inch Model.
TransIntl has recently introduced 1 GB Memory Modules for Apple Power Macintosh G5 2GHz/1.8 GHz ($319 for PC3200) and G5/1.6GHz models ($219 for PC2700)"
For Dual G5 tests with 512MB, 1.5GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB of RAM using OWC 16chip/1GB dimms, see this previous article. While on the subject of RAM, since the release of the new Powerbook models (12in, 15in, etc.) I had two reader reports in the past of problems with several 3rd party memory modules (sleep/wake from sleep issues or KP's). I asked Transintl and OWC about this and was told this issue has been addressed, but that some previous modules had these issues in the new design powerbooks.

| 10.3.1 update doesn't fix Geforce4MX issues (and reminder on previous tips) |
| Apple made no mention of revised Nvidia drivers in 10.3.1 (also see below for a listing of 10.3.1 revised files) and a reader with an older G4 tower (Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet models for example) with Geforce4MX card reported the update does not address the problems previously reported in Panther/10.3 with the card in older Macs. (Some GF2MX owners also noted the same problem in the past.) The FAQ's Video card section has links/info on past tips like OWC's page with a partial fix/driver, but that does not enable Quartz Extreme support. (The first 10.3.1 GF4MX owner report also mentioned no OpenGL support.) The other tip from the past here was to remove memory down to 256MB, but of course that's not a great option either (not very much memory for OS X use).
The FAQ also has the previous tip that some owners of 3dfx, Formac Proformance III and IXmicro graphics card owners used to solve the "rom too old" issue - although two readers with AGP macs using both a supported AGP card and unsupported older PCI card like these noted they had a problem after trying that nvram patch. (Clearing the NVRAM solves that issue typically for those that saw a problem. The FAQ's Apple G3, G4 and G5 sections have info on clearing/resetting the NVRAM.)

updates always overwrite any plugins that have the same name
as the standard set. Also remember 10.3 is not compatible with prev. OS X modified plugins or patchburn.)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, B&W G3 and 8600/9600 Macs)
DVD-R Drives:
- Firewire Lacie (Pioneer DVR-105 drive) used w/G4 Cube (OS X 10.3)
Hard Drives:
- Firewire Simple Technology 20GB used w/B&W G3 (OS 9.2)
(problems noted)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
