Panther Security Update 2003-11-19 includes Safari 1.1.1 Update
Although it wasn't listed in the update, a reader sent a note that the recent Security update for Panther/10.3.1 included an update to Safari (to v1.1.1)

" The latest security update for Panther also updated some files for Safari. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. Safari showed a small update to 1.1.1 (v100.1)
-Dale D.

Listing files for Security Update 2003-11-19
./Applications/ InfoPlist.strings
./usr/lib/libz.1.1.3.dylib "

I verified that a 10.3.1 system here w/o the 2003-11-19 Security Update applied had Safari 1.1 before and v1.1.1 after the Security Update. I also checked a system with 10.2.8 which had the security update applied yesterday and it shows Safari version 1.0.1. (According to reports, Safari 1.1.1 doesn't fix the cookie theft vulnerability issue noted earlier today.)

Reader Performance tests in 10.3 with Journaling On and Off
I had missed this reader mail in the past (just too many coming in day and night to keep up) but after yesterday's news link to an article on 10.3 journaling, Oliver sent a reminder that he had previously posted a page with OS X 10.3 Journaling performance tests.

Combat Mission: Afrika Korps Demo
(from their PR email - Note this game is NOT OS X compatible and won't run in classic mode per their FAQ. That info should be on the download page but isn't. I wrote to ask they include that there and in PR emails in the future.)

", producers of several excellent turn based World War 2 ground based combat simulation games has opened preordering and released a demo of its next release: Combat Mission: Afrika Korps. The demo includes 2 scenarios and is approximately 94mb in size. Combat Mission: Afrika Korps (CMAK) covers operations across the western desert, Sicily and Italy. It includes units for all the major combatants engaged in the Mediteranean theater.
The game and related forums can be found at: "

Cookie Theft Vulnerability still exists in Safari 1.1
(Note: a reader sent a note that the latest Security update for Panther/10.3.1 updates Safari to v1.1.1. I don't enable cookies in browsers and have not tested to see if 1.1.1 fixes the issue noted below present in Safari 1.1. The reader that reported this said 1.1.1 does not fix the issue.)
From a reader email recd last night in reply to yesterday's security updates for 10.2.8 and 10.3.

" See article and test:
Safari Cookie theft
It is an old Mozilla problem which surprises me that it made it into Panther. New update (yesterday) does not address
John G. "

I never enable cookies in any browser normally (unless required for a specific site transaction and then I disable/delete them afterwards).
Update/Tip: I've not personally tried it but reportedly a fix for this issue is available at (Bottom of page has English text version of info/instructions.)

Feedback on Open Source Flightgear and free Racer game for OS X
Yesterday's news had a note/link to an open-source, multi-platform flight simulator called FlightGear. (See their Downloads page for OS X downloads and note on terminal command to launch the game).
Here's the first reader feedback on the game, which also mentions a free (but not open source) Racer game:

" I tried it on my fw800 G4 (1x g4 1ghz) with a gf4mx and 10.2.8 and it worked quite well. I tried versions in the past on my summer 2000 imac dv (g3-400 and rage128 8mb) and it worked well tho required fiddling to run at decent framerates. It ran at 30fps on the g4 for the most part, then i crashed the plane (i always do). It seems like a very powerful product, i know you can get loads of maps for it.
You might as well try the driving simulator at, i get between 20 and 60fps on that same G4 and it works fine with my logitech momo wheel.
(there's some past posts here on Racer and Racer and USB gamepads)
Take note that both of these apps require a bit of tweaking to work as you might have to tweak config files to get them to run properly.
Hope this helps, your site helped me more often than not.
xonox / quikphix "

Another reader today wrote about Racer:

" I tried Racer a while ago (not sure if it's been updated since then) on my Dual 1 Ghz Quicksilver with stock Gf 4MX and 1GB ram. I didn't run it full screen but in window mode I got around 60 Fps in the stock car / maps but that dropped down to around 20 Fps in 3rd party ones. But the thing is mainly unplayable because when you hit the end of a map you go bouncing into space. This bug is unrecoverable and it makes it very annoying trying to get the hang of it. I't s nice project but it still needs a lot of work.
Maarten "

I don't have much free time to try these, but If any other readers try Flightgear or Racer, let me know what you think (include your mac model, graphics card, OS X version, etc.) Thanks.

IDE articles page RAID section has an illustrated guide for adding 2 more drives in the side bays.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
