Airport Extreme Driver Update 2005-001 for OS X 10.3.x
Last week Apple released this same update for 10.4.3 and today it's available for 10.3.x users via software update or this apple download page.

" Airport Extreme Driver Update 2005-001
This update resolves AirPort compatibility issues with certain third party 802.11 cards and access points for Mac OS X v10.3.3 through 10.3.9
System Requirements:
- Mac OS X v10.3.3 through 10.3.9
- AirPort Extreme (or compatible 802.11g) card"

A restart is required after the update. (Some readers with 3rd party Airport compatible 802.11g cards said the 10.4.3 version of this update helped with problems they'd seen with their cards in Tiger previously.)

Notes on 10.4.3 OpenGL front buffer, Menu problems w/some 3D apps/games
The mac OpenGL mail list has some reports on 10.4.3 front buffer drawing problems, including reports on problems with (free) Blender3D which was OK in 10.4.2. One post referenced a blender bug tracker report (titled "Menus not visible on Mac OS X 10.4.3 with nVidia card") and the mail list post said despite some reports this affected ATI cards also, they only saw it with Nvidia cards in 10.4.3. (Post mentions Nvidia 6800 Ultra card and even an older Geforce2MX - a reply said that an ATI 9650 card did not have the problem.)
Several developers have posted a bug report to Apple (http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/) saying:

" OSX 10.4.3, NVidia drivers for G5, does not support glDrawBuffer(GL_FRONT) anymore. (Note - this issue is not limited to G5 systems-Mike) This makes the 10.3.4 release unusable for most OpenGL applications, like the 3D suite Blender (runner-up winner of the Apple Design Award 2005). In Blender, all pulldown menus are drawn with this OpenGL command. "

Someone also mentioned Sims2 menu problems with Nvidia cards in 10.4.3, so games can also be affected.
If anyone sees a problem like this in 10.4.3 with an OpenGL app or game, let me know the details (and graphics card used).
Several readers with Nvidia graphics based Macs (FX5200, etc.) replied they've also seen the Sims2 menu problem in 10.4.3 and wrote that Aspyr is aware of the problem. Brandon sent a copy of Aspyr's reply:

" Aspyr Media Support Response
Hello Brandon,
The 10.4.3 update did make modifications that cause these problems for Sims 2 users who have Nvidia video cards. We are currently working on a solution, so please monitor our Sims 2 support page for updates.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
-Aspyr Support Team "

I'm not sure what method Lightwave 3D 7.5 uses for menus, but it seems ok in 10.4.3 running an ATI X800 card. (I pulled the Nvidia 6800 card from that system earlier this year for the X800 review and haven't used it since.)

Reader Request: Any PB G4 12in users able to get display rotation working?
(from a reader mail)
" I'm wondering whether any of your readers have had any luck using their 12" PowerBook G4 (current model) (Nvidia FX5200 based - 15in/17in models use ATI chips) with an external LCD display that supports the 90 degree pivot function to display the screen in portrait rather than landscape mode?
OS X 10.4 introduced the display rotation feature in the Display Preferences pane of the System Preferences application, but I only learned a few weeks after purchasing my 12" PowerBook G4 that display rotation was _not_ supported on this particular model of the PowerBook. This is very disappointing, and it seems a great pity given that 12" PowerBook G4 users are _more_ rather than less likely to want to use an external monitor given the smaller size of their screen. Given that this feature shouldn't require special graphics driver support, I can't see why Apple haven't enabled it for the 12" PowerBooks.

If any of your readers have had any luck using their 12" PowerBook G4 with a pivoting display in portrait mode -- perhaps there's some third party software out there which might perform this function that I'm not aware of, or maybe a firmware tweak or something like that - then I'd really appreciate hearing from them.
All the best,
Nicole V. "

Years ago (in 2001 IIRC) I remember posts here on some display rotation software (from a monitor vendor I think) that would rotate even the internal PB displays but I can't remember the details now and not sure it would even run in OS X Tiger. If any readers have a tip for Nicole (3rd party software, etc.), let me know.

Using Fuji S3500 with iChatAV in 10.4.3
" Hi, i want to tell you and others that since 10.4.3 the Fujifilm Digicam S3500 is now working with iChatAV.
The camera was seen before 10.4.3 also, but only working with all other (QT) Apps like BTV Pro or Ineen (great VOIP Video App).
Like "all" (near no other Digitalcamera is working in Webcam mode) USB-Devices you also need the commercial iChatUSBCam driver. (see http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/-Mike)

Review of SnaZio Net DVD Cinema HD
As a follow-up to yesterday's news post on the SnaZio Net DVD Cinema HD (Mac compatible High Definition Networked Player) a reader sent a link to a PDF copy of the HWM magazine review, although it's not a Mac-centric review. He later sent a link to another (PC-centric) review at http://www.mpcclub.com/modules/Reviews/reviews/Review_Snazio_Net_DVD_Cinema_HD.pdf. (The news post yesterday had notes on iTunes compatibility, etc. but like other networked media players, no support for Apple ITMS files.)

CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 2 new reports added. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,245 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • Firewire (cased) HP dvd640e used w/iBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn 3 for 10.3.x iApps burn support. )
  • USB (cased) Asus SDRW-0804P-D used w/Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4)
    (listed under "Other" brand)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
