Hardware and Temperature Monitor updates add Dual Core G5, New PowerBook support, more
There's new builds today (Build 051110) of shareware Hardware monitor 3.1 and (freeware) Temperature Monitor 3.1 that add compatibility with new macs and more. Change info from the version history page:

" Release 3.1 (Build 051110)
  • The new version contains a workaround for the problem that Mac OS X did not update the readings for some specific low-priority sensors of certain Macintosh models. Now all sensor values are refreshed under all conditions. This affects temperature sensors of the 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBook G4 models released in 2005, as well as the ambient air temperature sensors of PowerMac G5 models.
  • Added support for the new PowerMac G5 Dual Core systems.
  • Added support for the new PowerBook G4 (Super Drive Dual Layer) systems.
  • Added support for ambient light sensors found in the latest PowerBook models (Hardware Monitor only).
  • Added support for several new S.M.A.R.T. hard disk sensors.
  • The display of the extreme value table in the drawer of the history window has been optimized.
  • Corrected a problem where keyboard navigation in the sensor preference outline view did not update the entry fields.
  • Corrected a problem where curves in the history graphs were displayed with the wrong time scale for certain intervals.
  • Corrected a problem where the clock frequencies of the local computer were displayed in the system info window although a remote computer was selected."
  • There's also an update dated today to Hardware Monitor Remote:

    " Release 3.1 (Build 051109)
  • Added support for the new PowerMac G5 Dual Core systems.
  • Added support for the new PowerBook G4 (Super Drive Dual Layer) systems.
  • Added support for ambient light sensors found in the latest PowerBook models.
  • Added support for several new S.M.A.R.T. hard disk sensors.
  • Fixed a problem with certain versions of Mac OS X where the user interface lost track whether the monitoring service was running or not when the service was running for an extended period of time."

    Water Cooled MDD Tower article
Steve Smedley sent a link to his .mac pages on Water Cooled Mirror Drive Door system mods. There's several pages of info, pictures, etc. on the mods. Very nice work. He's also got a flashed Nvidia 6800 card in there... (The Systems page also has articles on MDD system, cooling and case conversion mods.)

Transferring FCP Video from G4 Tower to Mac Mini iMovie HD Using Firewire
" Hi Mike, I have not seen this mentioned before, "Using Firewire to create a scratch piece (duplicate video) between a Mac Mini running "Tiger"and a G4 running 10.1.5." Here is how I do it:

    PowerMac G5 Quads are shipping
    " quads shipping!
Yep: I got the notice - my Quad G5 has shipped! (Hard to believe that Apple actually shipped something early, but I've got a delivery number!)
(I asked if he ordered the standard config or if he had any BTO options-Mike)
Standard config: I didn't want to wait the extra 3 weeks... I can put in my own (cheaper) RAM.
BTW, I don't know if you're a fan of ergonomic keyboards, but Microsoft has a great one for the Mac: the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. $49 at Amazon... -Tracy V."

The Nvidia 7800 GT wasn't an option originally but was added awhile back. If I could afford it I'd go for the 7800 over the stock 6600 (although it adds $350 to the quad cost).

Reports on recent Airport Extreme update fixing problems
" Hey Mike, Follower and user of your site since 1998. (i think it was) Just wanted to let you (and others) know the latest update to airport (Apple Airport Update 2005-001 for Tiger, also available for 10.3.x users-Mike) fixed a music streaming issue that seemed to have started with one of the Tiger updates.
Music streamed to my stereo via Airport Express would suddenly cut our for a few seconds once in a while, but without consistency. Anyway, the update fixed that.
    -Ben "

A reader sent a mail last week that the update also helped with a 3rd party 802.11g card problem he'd had previously.

" Airport Updated 2005-001 fixed my third party wireless card. I wanted to note that I just updated my dual 867MHz MDD system with the 2005-001 Airport Update and it allowed my Motorola 802.11g PCI card to start working once again. In Tiger prior to the update, my card wouldn't connect to any networks - even though it had worked fine in 10.3.x. I know some other people had mentioned this problem too, so it's good to see Apple addressed it (and even noted this in the description of the update)!
    - Mike "

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
